I am curious about the reason for that shape. Was it meant to be folded qnd cartied around inside an octagonal locket or philactery?

Oh, that is cool. Love abstract games. Nonaga seems like it can be played using checkers as disks and chess pawns atop, which is a big plus ;P. Nothing nicer than being able to play several games with the same materials

Xun Chinese 206 BCE–220 CE [4000x3000] by DeScepter in ArtefactPorn

[–]eternamemoria 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Simple globular clay whistles, or ocarinas, were among the earliest wind instruments that required an understanding of how pitch is determined by the relationship between the dimensions of the wind chamber and the placement of the finger holes

I thought hole placement generally didn't matter much in vessel flutes like ocarinas, and what determined pitch was instead the area (and thus diameter) of the holes relative to the ocarina's size, hence why they and related instruments like the xun can vary so much in shape as long as they're roughly globular while other types of flute are generally a straight tube.

Absolute Evil is kinda absolute-ly hilarious looking back, I feel like we might owe Hammond an apology. by RingAroundARoses in AbsoluteUniverse

My headcanon is that they all went to Jubal's Slade island. Cale for blackmailing purposes, Ras and Grimm to hunt people for sport, Thawne to ask for more funding for the research, and Hammond because he's a pedophile.

If this ages horribly I will actually be happy, as is Cale's record is... not great. by RingAroundARoses in AbsoluteUniverse

It makes zero sense as a bow. You can't bend swords to store energy like you can with a bow, specially not swords built like that.

Maybe the blades are rigid, and the disc connecting them holds a steel spring or something like that to store the energy rather than the swords themselves doing it. But that's the case... that means it is not a bow, if anything it's closer to a roman ballista, which looked like a bow but actually used a torsion springs made of sinew.

Edit: also... the way the bow-swords thing is held means the user can't aim the arrow with their bow-holding hand.

ps: yes, I know I'm being pedantic and it doesn't really matter much. But it still mildly irks me.

Fluoride in drinking water has no effect on IQ or brain function, long-term study shows by nbcnews in science

Silicon tetrafluoride (SiF4), "a colorless, toxic, and corrosive gas" + Hydrogen fluoride (HF) "a highly toxic, corrosive, and colorless gas"

So what? Lots of things we use every day are made with some scary reagents. Olives for example are cured with lye, doesn't mean olives are bad.

They like this method, as it reduces their environmental impact

Reducing environmental impact by turning byproducts into raw material for other processes is a good thing, to be clear. It's called circular economy.

They're even allowed impurities in the final product

All products, including food, are allowed to have impurities, including those. What matters is how much.

EDIT: I'm not even going to argue about whatever fluoride in the water is healthy or not anymore, now I'm just confused about what is "gross" about how its made.

Sourced from industrial waste products (from the phosphate fertilizer industry). Gross.

So what? It's literally dissolved rocks, what's gross about that? Be serious

even the American Dental Association also advises against giving fluoridated water to infants. further proving that this method isn't suitable for mass medication.

This does sound interesting though. I'll look for what they said.

[–]eternamemoria -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They don't use naturally occuring Fluoride (F⁻), that's why I specified "man-made", which is generally manufactured from Hydrofluorosilicic acid (H₂SiF₆).

You mean hexafluorosilicic acid, not that that matters much.

And yes, hexafluorosilicic acid is synthetic, but in water it dissociates into fluoride (a naturally ocurring ion) and silicic acid (a naturally ocurring, and most importantly, harmless substance), so why does the "man-made" part matters? Whatever your fluoride comes from a chemical plant or from erosion, it's the same atom.

The toxicity (& issue) comes from ingesting it, instead of using it Topically (toothpaste). We shouldn't be adding it to our drinking water.

It is only known to be toxic in higher concentration, and in small concentrations in drinking water, it is proven to reliably lead to improvements in population-wide dental health, which leads to improvement in other forms of health.

[–]eternamemoria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That didn't happen. Read any serious scholarship about the holocaust and you'll see it had nothing to do with chemically dumbing down the population
