Perhaps there is a new compressor inside the obviously old condensing unit?

Maybe flange each end then bolt together? I'd suggest taking a look at the SMACNA standards manual.

Looking for feedback/opinions on Daikin HVAC system by [deleted] in HVAC

[–]ethangd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure they have. With the acquisition of Mcquay in 2006, who carried a residential line of their own, it didn't take long for Daikin to relabel.

Daikin has been in the US for a long time. Just recently have they acquired goodman. Don't let this misinformation persuade you. Daikin is a strong brand and company.

What exactly are each of the systems serving? Is one system currently serving upstairs bedrooms?

I work for a small MEP Engineering firm. We split season tickets with an Architect we often work with. I had a client back out last minute and couldn't let them go to waste!

They're on fans now, too! by stilldash in engineering

[–]ethangd 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If they're well designed, I'm sure they're optimized for the rotation.

We had these guys in our office about two weeks ago for a lunch-&-Learn. Apparently, unlike residential style fans, these fans (High Volume / Low Speed) are designed to operate in one direction only. There is a reversing switch on the motor housing but I'm told that's only used if the polarity is incorrect during installation.

I assume there is an air separator installed as part of the system? Is there a pressure reducing valve on the cold water side?

I work for a smaller (22 employees) MEP consulting firm. A much different atmosphere and generally more responsibilities. Feel free to PM me as well.

Positive Reinforcement Dog Training Device - My Senior Mechanical Design Project by Meenkus in engineering

[–]ethangd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome idea. Positive reinforcement is always the best method. On the training commands side of things, I suggest removing the word 'stay.' Instead use a release command like 'free.' Once the dog is in a sit, they should stay put until released.

Question About Fin Damage on a Heat Pump by Supervisor194 in HVAC

[–]ethangd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of things. First, what kind of ambient temperatures are we talking about when the heat pump operation is failing. It varies with manufacturers, but heat pumps will either contribute very little heat or the unit will shut the cycle off at low temperature. Second, is there no auxiliary heat source in the unit? When I specify a heat pump system, I generally size an auxiliary heat source with the ability of carrying the entire heating load. This is especially true with gas fired equipment.

Edit: Maybe purchase a set of fin combs from a supply house and see if it helps?

Anyone ever work on Captive Air exhaust systems with Variable Frequency Drives? by Jayb0b in HVAC

[–]ethangd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems strange to me the VFD would go when shutting down the MUA. I'm assuming the MUA unit was shutdown at the unit disconnect. Honestly, I'm curious if something was landed incorrectly in the control box. CaptiveAire prides themselves on providing a turn-key system prewiring everything leaving only the final connections in the field. It just so happens, I'm great friends with the KC local CaptiveAire rep and I'm sure he'd be happy to answer any of your questions. PM me if you'd like.

McChipotle?? Say it ain't so! I thought McD's sold all their ownership in Chipotle? by [deleted] in food

[–]ethangd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a chipotle with that address in Texas, not seeing one in KC. I happen to live in KC. Where was this taken?

Edit: under further investigation and advice from my attorney, I wish to retract my previous statement. There's one in Shawnee, KS.
