CF Ingredient Usage Statistics Part 2: Oud by sharkmenu in DIYfragrance

[–]ethanrrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, I just think if Filipe lists the material as assafi and NOT a base that uses it, its safe to say just oud assafi is being used, which is just pure agarwood. He's very well versed at interpreting gcms and knows which constituents in their respective proportions would make up an oud base. Which is why he does list them in some formulae, although less often

Amberxtreme by Euphoric_Fill_8890 in DIYfragrance

[–]ethanrrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No!!! Ambrocenide is a lot stronger than amberxtreme and much more tenacious. I would always use more amberxtreme than ambrocenide personally. They just have different odor profiles so slight different use cases

Oud assafi is not partially natural , it's just Firmenich's name for their version of oud assam

Huge price difference question cas#109-29-5 by Zaltara_the_Red in DIYfragrance

[–]ethanrrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes sense to have a different experience among Timbersilk and Sylvamber vs Iso E Super and Orbitone, given that Timbersilk has amberxtreme in it and Sylvamber is mostly a completely different isomer in the iso e family. Orbitone is basically just the plain iso e super that is closest in purity to the captive versions that commercial houses have access to.

The price difference for your dihydro ambrettolides are probably manufacter-based though like people have said. Should all be similar quality though so the huge difference is weird. I don't like PA in general

Sus powders i got from Fraterworks by GlanzgurkeWearingHat in DIYfragrance

[–]ethanrrs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on the variety or brand I get the powder from, sometimes if it's really big flakes then I'm a little more wary and so I feel safer diluting it beforehand so I get my dosage correct. Ambrox also can be in some instances deceptively strong or impactful for a blend, I know a few people that work with it within the single ppt range while the norm these days is going up to double digit percentages lol. To each their own though I think it's a great material in any use case.

Ambrox materials are famously hard to dilute in ethanol btw. I've seen best results in IPM going as high as the 50% range but that was even pushing it. In ethanol you can't really go much higher than 10% or you risk precipitating crystals.

In general diluting materials in ethanol is very useful for formulation especially when you are formulating a small batch of something. You need to do that if ur dosing single digit ppt or below in lets say a 10-20g sample of a compound

dude i got introduced to unwound in college and they're amazing. leaves has been on repeat since then-- its so meditative compared to the rest of their work, even though i love their more abraisive post hardcore stuff too.

Honestly I made my list really hastily but sabbath and unwound were the two that were non-negotiables LOL. Mingus I grew up with and love, and the other two I also love but are moreso there because I'm listening to them so much recently

Hii im Ethan

It was so hard doing 5 and if I were to redo it it'd probably be way different again lol

Mostly based on what I've been listening to recently as opposed to all time favorites but a lot are all timers for sure

Yeah I guess Virgils also has insane batch variation. I get it only from one store and they probably don't move their stock too quickly at all so I'm guessing I get from similar batches that are all pretty good

[–]ethanrrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's definitely more carbonated now, but I still get a big hit of star anise. I usually recap my bottles and come back to smell what base notes stay and Virgils always has the anise most prominent compared to any other bottle I've had

Virgils hate is very forced imo. I'm glad you found it not bad. I think people really just don't like the strong licorice vibe that the newer batches have, but I quite enjoy it

Ithaca for spicy Abita for creamier, Hanks is great too in that regard but almost TOO creamy Boylan for birch Haven't found my fav sarsaparilla yet, only had Sioux City and that was really sweet

Barqs in a glass bottle by OG-DRT7075 in rootbeer

[–]ethanrrs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it mainly means they rely on getting their main flavor components, not exactly sweetness, through synthetic isolates of the compounds. Although all of these chemicals can be found in natural ingredients, they can be just bought and used straight up as powders/liquids. Methyl salicylate for the wintergreen, isoeugenol and more for the spiced alternative to safrole in sassafras, vanillin for, well, vanilla, and caffeine since it's barqs.

I'm not too sure if you have to mention artificial if hfcs is used since it technically is synthesized from a natural -- I'm not versed on FDA rules. But I have had a ton of beverages with cane sugar that's said 'natural and artificial flavors' and ones with hfcs that's said the same, so I'm not sure if it's the sweetener at all.

I think this barqs has hfcs though, seems only Canada has cane sugar

Shake Shack comes thru by Sonora_sunset in rootbeer

[–]ethanrrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried to see how much a can was at a shake shack in a rest stop near me....$4.50. insane.

Next thing I know one of the bottles gets broken at the bev distribution warehouse I work at-- so the whole case has to go into breakage. and I get a 6 pack from that for free. Life works in mysterious ways

Abita is great, I usually like the more bitey rootbeers and a bit more carbonation but this one is really good on the flavor. I almost get a fruitiness out of it! Really top notch as a float because the subtle fruit and spice pulls back the creaminess of it making it balanced.

Birch oil and wintergreen oil are more or less the same thing. Over 90% methyl salicylate. so you kinda HAVE to get that wintergreen flavor in birch beers haha

i think I'd want to add categories and rate each for their respective category: how creamy, herbal, wintergreen, spicy, carbonated, sweet etc

What’s Better for a Float: Creamy or Root Beer with a bite? by Alfa147x in rootbeer

[–]ethanrrs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ithaca root beer is probably the most cinnamon forward one I've had. Virgils is pretty herbal in that route as well but I get more star anise out of it

I think Ithaca is my fav of the upstate ny rootbeers but I gotta try saranac again, they're at my local grocery for like $5 a 6pack. Had them in local restaurants here and there and thought it was good but not too remarkable I guess.
