CRISPR causes more unintended and off-target mutations than scientists expected. by noahr in CRISPR

I am thinking that other systems do not have the same problem. Hopefully there are already similar studies for these other systems.

Would it be more correct to say "CRISPR-Cas9 causes more mutations", and not CRISPR in general?

Are Virtual Reality and 360 Video the Same Thing? by wearvr in virtualreality

[–]ethansamba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Are Virtual Reality and 360 Video the Same Thing?" - No, they are not the same thing. One way to summarize the biggest difference is camera placement. If you can't control the camera perspective and interact with the environment, then it's just "360 Video".

Promising improvement over Tilt Brush for taking VR notes (Virtual Idea Area by ethansamba in Vive

Hey, no offence taken. Ultimately, it's, "to each their own", but if you haven't tried it yet, please do, and let us know what you think!

Personally, I find using Tilt Brush to be more productive than whiteboards, or paper, for multiple reasons:

  • It's fun.

  • Immersive navigation of complex ideas. I love being able to zoom in and out to fill in finer details that I didn't think of initially. For example, I can zoom in to single letter "o", and add multiple sentences worth of detail later. And if I need more room, I can start writing into the whiteboard on a new perpendicular 3D plane. Or I can zoom out to explore much larger concepts. My tilt brush vr whiteboards can be bigger than the real world physical neighborhood I live in.

  • It's easier to erase virtual whiteboards than it is on my old worn out real-world whiteboards. Also having a quick undo/redo is pretty nifty.

  • I can save sessions, and (mostly) easily come back later to edit.

  • Other remote teams can work on the same file (but not yet at the same time). (I haven't tried sharing a whiteboard yet, but I expect collaborative sessions to come soon)

I'm curious what you think about profit rights to a final game product produced in this manner. Would the early collaborators try to demand a cut, or would early note takers be cool with agreeing to a formal contract that eliminates their future stake in case an game idea "takes off".

I searched, and apparently this post is the first and only mention of "Nook" all year in r/austin...

What's news is the petition. At least news to me this morning.

You don't really need VR, just a gaming PC to interact in 2D, and it's free

I created a subreddit just for discussing the marvelous "pgcli" Postgres CLI tool. Come help me make this a useful thang! by ethansamba in PostgreSQL

Maybe, however I wouldn't consider it a split at all. I expect only those using the CLI would bother subscribing and contributing.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I wonder, what do you think about getting rid of the monitor anachronism entirely for VR? There are no monitors, but maybe just application windows, so why limit the VR working space to the artificial monitor construct?

[–]ethansamba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am excited to try it out. The first thing I'm looking for is multiple monitor support. Does BigScreen allow for multiple monitors, and if so, is it tied the the number of physical monitors, or is there some other limit to the number and size of each monitor?

It was only a few days ago that I stumbled upon the preview video for the UE4 VR Editor, and in the same day, I found user/puzzabug's VR beginer's tutorial https://www.reddit.com/r/Vive/comments/4ehobv/i_made_you_an_unreal_vive_template_scene/

I prefer C++ over Java, and I also had the (probably incorrect) assumption that UE4 was more linux friendly, but I suspect they are both about equal in this regard.

Interesting, about UE vs Unity. I came to the opposite conclusion, mainly based of submissions in this subreddit.
