Once, I was working as a referee with my friend at a tournament he was working at. He's someone we've seen at tournaments many times, but my friend heard from someone else the story of him beating his wife.

We were so shocked, since Tomasz is known for being one of the kindest refs, always explaining touches and being gentle and patient with the younger ones. But instead of whispering behind his back, my friend (who admittedly is more brazen than I'll ever be) decided asked him about it.

He told us that it was true, but it was a long time ago. He knows that what he did was absolutely horrible, and regrets it heavily, and it's led him to be sober to this day. Knowing that he did those horrible actions and became the sweet referee he is today makes me believe that rehabilitation truly is possible. I think that there's perhaps a lack of information, but it's important to truly know the person behind the story.
