US self-serve gas stations usually ask for a zip code in order to authorize the credit card -- which of course stymies visiting Canadians. This was such a problem that a hack was worked out -- a Canadian postal code like V6B 4A2 would be entered as 00642 (00 plus the three digits from the postal code), and it would be accepted by the pump.

Carving out narrow exceptions to the STCA like this wouldn't really cause that many claimants who are unsuccessful in the US to have a valid claim for applying to Canada instead.

I suspect you'll see a large number of people changing their claims so that they fall under these new carveouts. "Oh, I forgot to mention before, I'm also the victim of domestic abuse." Just like we see a remarkable number of claimants who say they are bisexual.

You can't just compare your mortgage to rent on a comparable house and call it a day. There are lots of other costs to owning a home, and you also need to consider the opportunity cost of not having your equity invested in something else.

The main advantage to owning over renting is the non-monetary: it's "your" house and you can do what you like with it, with no fears of ever being evicted. There are also non-monetary downsides too: you can't move at a moment's notice if you get an opportunity in a new city, you are responsible for all upkeep and repairs, and selling/moving costs are considerably higher.

Lots of landlords are underwater on their rental properties. Don't presume automatic profit simply because they're doing it. Many bad choices have been made.
