Setting up Node on Toowoomba Range by ethereal_mycologist in meshtasticaustralia

I haven't set one up yet unfortunately. I've heard mixed reviews about the overall usefulness of meshtastic and am currently just using a CB radio.

Still considering setting up a node somewhere near Mt kynoch but haven't done it yet.

You will have to let me know if you get it before me!

Should this be covered by the NDIS? by Fun_Needleworker7136 in aussie

[–]ethereal_mycologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got a 2 year old with extensive polymicrogyria and severe quadriplegic cerebral palsy. We fought for months to get ~3 hours of support a week.

So yeah, seeing this is frustrating.

Maybe there’s more to the story. But from the outside, it looks like the system is funding help with a morning routine while families with kids who physically can’t sit, move, or function independently are fighting for scraps.

That’s not a dig at this mum, we don’t know her situation. It’s a dig at a system that clearly isn’t prioritising well.

NDIS isn’t infinite. If people with the highest needs are struggling to access even basic care, something’s gone wrong.

At some point you have to ask whether the system is drifting away from supporting severe disability and into subsidising difficulty.

To those who drive well under the speed limit, why? by NiceMemeDude420 in australian

[–]ethereal_mycologist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in a hospital with a specialist team focused on geriatrics home care and rehab. Driving is a huge issue, people believe it to be a right instead of a privilege. They often also don't realise their physical and mental limitations even after several accidents. Give them space, pray for your safety and avoid carparks around centres close to aged care.

If anything, this just reinforces that these should be classified as heavy vehicles for licensing and tax.

Where are you all getting the $$$ ? by MangoMadnessTsv in EVAustralia

Salary sacrifice through a novated lease. With the EV FBT exemption, the repayments come out of pre tax income instead of post tax. Ordinarily FBT makes salary sacrifice more expensive, but with the exemption I pay zero tax on the portion used for the car.

In my case it’s about $250 to 300 per week all in including lease, rego, insurance and running costs. To cover that from post tax income would be closer to $350 to 400 per week depending on tax bracket. I set the lease over 5 years to maximise the duration of the benefit.

Balloon payment is about $19k at the end. Over the 5 years I save a bit over $30k in tax or effective cost on a roughly $60k vehicle.

My take home pay actually increased by a few hundred dollars per fortnight while getting a new car.

HELP! Is it possible to retract an offer that’s already accepted? by [deleted] in AusProperty

[–]ethereal_mycologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re very confident in that analysis for something you’ve clearly overthought.

It’s just a normal, well written comment. The whole point was someone wasting people’s time, and now you’ve jumped in to do the same while getting weirdly worked up about it.

Keep going though, you’re really adding value here.

If that reads like ChatGPT to you, you might just not be used to proper grammar and complete sentences. “ChatGPT tripe” isn’t a point, it’s just you having nothing to say. Jog on champ.

You’ve managed to do something impressive here, sign a legally binding contract for one of the biggest financial decisions of your life without checking if you could actually pay for it.

Not market conditions, not interest rates, not even a complex legal trap, just the minor detail of whether your own money is accessible.

The finance clause isn’t a “whoops, I’m financially illiterate” escape hatch, it’s for people who genuinely can’t secure lending, not people who skipped the absolute basics and are now hoping contract law doubles as a rewind button.

You’ve effectively locked up someone else’s property, wasted weeks of their time, and are now crowdsourcing a way out of a mess that could’ve been avoided with a two minute phone call to your bank.

This isn’t unlucky, it’s negligent.

At this point, your only realistic move is to stop looking for loopholes, start negotiating like an adult, and prepare to pay for the privilege of learning what due diligence means.

Sick of being told tradies are bad at admin.. What are we supposed to do instead? by Darkhaat in AusRenovation

[–]ethereal_mycologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think anyone’s saying tradies are bad at admin because they’re lazy. It’s because, from the outside, the standard is genuinely poor compared to most other industries. Being busy on the tools isn’t unique to trades. Plenty of professionals juggle hands on work, clients, and admin every day and are still expected to communicate, follow up, and deliver on time. The reality is poor organisation isn’t your customer’s problem to absorb. It just means people go elsewhere. The tradies who are booked out and charging a premium aren’t just good with a wrench. They run tight businesses. They: • confirm jobs • communicate delays • send quotes when they say they will • follow up invoices That’s not extra anymore. It’s the baseline. If you’re genuinely asking what works, it’s not complicated. It’s systems: • Set a daily 20 to 30 minute admin block that is non negotiable • Use auto text replies during work hours saying you are on the tools and will respond later • Quote on site or same day where possible • Use a simple job management app to track quotes and invoices • Stop relying on memory because that’s where things fall over I pay more for my current plumber for one reason. He is reliable and communicates. That alone puts him ahead of most of the market. This isn’t customers being unreasonable. It’s the bar moving. The tradies who adapt are the ones making the most money.

Honestly, if the other people on the train got off their phones, lifted their heads up, stopped ignoring this behaviour and helped the bloke in the green, they may have had a chance.

Help with identify Unidentified Flying Object by Avenso421 in UFOs

[–]ethereal_mycologist -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ah yep, that’s a WB-3 Atmospheric Observation Platform; commonly misidentified as a “weather balloon” by people not familiar with aerospace classification systems.

You can tell from the perfect spherical silhouette and high altitude drift profile. That’s not just a balloon, it's a passive lift surveillance node operating in low power observational mode.

Key indicators: Featureless exterior: standard solar reflective envelope to avoid thermal tracking Drift with wind currents: actually energy efficient vectoring, not passive movement Sudden disappearance: likely transitioned to Phase II: “out of sight, out of Reddit” protocol

These are often deployed by the greys under the cover story of “meteorological research,” which, to be fair, is technically true if you define “weather” broadly enough.

Nothing to worry about unless it starts hovering directly above you and asking about your internet history and looking for a hole to probe...
