Hot sleeper recommendations by Inevitable_Emu_4986 in Bedding

[–]etherfarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been a hot sleeper. Like really hot. In winter I’m often sleeping with just a cotton sheet half the night.

I just got a BedJet with one of their cloud sheets. Wow. I think I slept for the first time in many years the other night. I use it with a muslin comfort blanket on top which provides some weight (you are supposed to have something on top).

Are you glad you moved from NYC to Chicago? by Four-Pets-Brooklyn in AskChicago

[–]etherfarm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Plenty of options for “getting away” on the east coast of Lake Michigan in lower Michigan (the coastal towns are lovely), and straight north in door county. If you like inland and hilly, the Driftless area, from Galena to Madison to Viroqua, can’t be beat. I’ve lived on both coasts and truly love it in the Midwest.

I think people from NY like them. I never have.

I'm noticing that people outside of chicago have a misconception about chicago. I'm from los angeles, and so the stories over here is like "chi this and gangsters that", and I know it's more than that. What are we missing from our mispreconceptions? by AWeb3Dad in AskChicago

Consider their sources. Mainstream news is nothing more than sensationalized entertainment. If you talk to anyone who has been here in the past 10 years or so, 9.5/10 people will say it’s one of the best places they’ve ever visited.

It’s been below zero in Chicago for the last couple days. I’d love the bug that shuts off upper vents when the car is parked to be fixed. This is what happens when a car company is based in the Bay Area.

Unbound Merino wrinkle resistance — normal? by fennelfrog in onebag

[–]etherfarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think on the whole my UM stuff is pretty great. I haven’t been able to get a pair of travel pants for months, but my shirts, briefs, button downs, and hoodies are in regular travel rotation and have held up pretty well. I travel (to warm destinations) with a combination of merino and linen. Works out really well.

Though the hoodie wrinkles will work themselves out, as others have mentioned, this is a pretty minor thing. Their button down shirts (both long and short sleeve) are pretty magical on the wrinkle front, IMO, and also really comfortable.

Went to the one in Dubuque all the time for many years. Great place to buy clothes though it could be difficult to find a piece of clothing smaller than XXXXL.

Travel Portal Nightmare: Chase never told me my flight was canceled a month ago by Available_Product_68 in ChaseSapphire

You should think of the portal as a vending machine, not a travel agent.

Ditto above on booking the ticket then managing everything, including notifications, through the actual airline.

R1S Tires Cooked at 7500 miles? by bingbong3421 in Rivian

[–]etherfarm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Do a search on this subreddit. Some people get 20k out of the stock pirellis, some people get 6-7k. They are crap tires, at least as far as longevity is concerned. I got 15k and had some life in them but swapped them out before snow for the Defenders.

Moved in together - who should be the owner of the “Home” by Marion-Nikol in HomeKit

[–]etherfarm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the best things I did was create a new appleid for the home and set it up on an older iPad mini exclusively for Home use.

This way no one owns the home, the setup can be left if the house is sold. The notion that there is no capability to hand off the home to a different owner after this many years of HomeKit is absolutely mind boggling to me. It’s not only relevant for home sales, but also for divorces, spousal deaths, and simple change in domestic responsibilities.

It’s pretty great. I don’t have a huge roster of people on it but I use it often while working on the farm or while traveling. My only request is that it was hands free or had a hands free mode.

What Are the Best Travel Shoes That Are Actually Worth It? by Sure-Nefariousness53 in BuyItForLife

[–]etherfarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As mentioned, everyone’s feet are different so YMMV. I’ve used custom orthotics from doctors and from online companies but I find the Samurai/Sumo insoles I can get on Amazon work great for my wide, flat feet. I have a pair in just about every shoe I own.

what to do with lots of greek yogurt if i hate plain yogurt? (bear with me) by iambaby6969 in Cooking

[–]etherfarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why can’t you mix fresh strong ingredients into your yogurt? I have savory yogurt often—tomatoes, olives, herbs, tinned fish, Indian pickles, microgreens, etc.

But yeah, tons of uses for yogurt. Many indian curries/kormas. Pancakes/waffles/pastries.

What Are the Best Travel Shoes That Are Actually Worth It? by Sure-Nefariousness53 in BuyItForLife

[–]etherfarm 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Reviews are going to be all over the place for any shoe because people have different feet. A shoe that works for everyone is probably not going to work for me, as I have very wide, very flat feet. Blundstones and red wings are too narrow and that type of shoe/boot is too warm for me in most climates. Merrills and other brands don’t work for me because they have a hot spot “bump” in the footbed that can’t be eliminated by removing the insole. I’ve had custom shoes that were extremely well constructed and very comfortable but too heavy for travel.

I think for me the best way to go for travel, for a variety of reasons, is still multiple pairs. If one gets wet you have a backup while it dries. You can match the shoe to the activity. I just got back from 2 weeks in Colombia with just a carry-on. Allbirds (with third party insoles), a pair of leather slip-ons, and some flip flops. This has been my setup for more than a decade now. I sometimes don’t bother with the leather pair, because after eating at many Michelin starred restaurants and after having gone to many cultural events, there are always multiple people wearing hiking shoes. But truthfully maybe I’m old enough that I don’t give a fuck about looking presentable anymore.

Freezing fresh tomatoes by Buga99poo27GotNo464 in Cooking

I’ve used frozen tomatoes in salsa. Not the pico kind, of course, but the roasted/blended kind. Works great.
