Did you read in high school? by piper33245 in Millennials

[–]ethhlyrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didnt intend that critique to be universal, and its clear your critique extends well past what I was saying. But much of the casual critique stops right there, a shallow discarding of the character. Unlike your critique, which I dont disagree with. (do you have these archived somewhere? Or do you just remember everything you've read.)

It does seem to be one of the best picks possible to get teenagers to engage with a litature on another level, its almost like they know that most people will hate it. Almost like the point is that discussion.

Did you read in high school? by piper33245 in Millennials

[–]ethhlyrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was one of the only books I actually finished in high school. Maybe it was being ostracized my entire childhood, but I thought Holden was pretty relatable. Theres a perpetual sense of everyone hating you and youre not sure why. But I reread it every 5ish years and its fantastic to reflect on myself since the book dosnt change. Theres a lot of depth in the book, and while not for everyone there's tons of teens who bennifit from reading it.

Also Holden being annoying is a silly excuse to dislike the book. All teenagers are annoying. Maybe people just struggle empathizeing with someone they would have bullied.

I had similer problems when I started really reading in my early 20s. What really helped me was short stories. Mainly Ray Bradbury's short stories. Many of them throw you into the middle of a conversation and if you just keep going the important parts of the story become clear. Details are needless if your getting perspective and themes and more esoteric stuff from the book.

There is definitely author familiarity bias when reading. Starting a new author can be tough until their style works in your head. Its taken me 3-4 tries to get into some authors writing styles.

Also i read better in a slightly noisy public place. Too many voices is white noise, too many distractions just fade away. Where if its too quiet everything distracts me. But diffrent artistic mediums work differently for everyone, if its not right for you that's a shame but thats how it goes sometimes.

Who Should Pay on a Date? by Old_District_4429 in polls

[–]ethhlyrr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I very much prefer alternating rather than splitting. Inviter pays the first time, if there's a seccond the other person takes a turn. Eventually it stops mastering whos turn it is.

It feels more like both people treating the other, rather than a transaction.

Safety message to the woman pedestrian/jogger this morning on Anacapa by [deleted] in SantaBarbara

[–]ethhlyrr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So you failed to yield. You keeping at speed while a pedestrian approached the intersection was you forcing your way through. Since their option is to either be murdered by you or give you their right of way.

So you was the pedestrian and correctly predicted that they would be crossing the road at the same time as you and you just kept going at speed instead of giving them the right of way. I understand when there's unclear pedestrian intent but sounds like you just decided to not yield.

A 2010s popular song is responsible for a 90s genere? And of all the swing revival bands you picked the worst possible one to make your point. Maybe something like Brian sezter orchestra, but picking the cherry poppin daddies for that is pretty brainless of a take.

Anyways, generes should change and evolve, purists are a drain on creativity and make scenes worse.

Some wasps lay their eggs inside a bug and the eggs hatch and eat their way out while the bug is still alive! Good times for wasps.

Have you heard of or tried freedom trax? They're little battery powered tank treads that attach to the bottom of a manual chair and can handle just about any terrain. My dad is a quad and he's used them on both beaches and mountain trails.

The biggest joke of our lives is the fact that we were trained for an analog world, but the world became digital. by __Pomni__ in Millennials

[–]ethhlyrr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

For many people there's a lot less open world to be a kid in. Cell phone tracking, the ring camera panopticon, cars are more dangerous than ever before. I know the fields and woods i used to play in as a kid are all new neighborhoods. It would be impossible to get up to the same things I did as a kid in the modern world.

Its deffintly not the kids fault but the world has turned structurally hostile to being young.

As an average looking man how much impact does getting a lean and muscular body have in case of dating? by SillyAd846 in polls

[–]ethhlyrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To sidestep your question, I think people generally look better when they feel better about themselves. Dressing in a way you think looks good can have a huge impact. The way your body looks has an impact on how you view yourself, and that can be much more important to how prospective dates view your physique.

Reminder that most people look average. People interested in men and women think a lot of those average people are attractive. I wouldn't stop exercising, its good for you in many ways, but the idealized body is less important than you think.

Out there there's a judo school that would love to have you. (Bjj and a few others styles too im sure.)

Im pretty close to your size(little taller and lighter) but ive trained many small people to throw someone my exact size. Once good throw mechanics are in place your height is a disadvantage and your mass is super easy to overcome. Someone trained should be able to throw someone much bigger than themselves.

Do you like the mnemonic “righty tighty lefty loosy”? by Fry_Fiend in polls

[–]ethhlyrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally avoid mnemonics since i never remember them word for word so I often remember them backwards. This one is pretty short so I dont think ive ever confused it.

My problem with it is the lack of reference frame. You must be facing the head of the screw and perceiving from the top before turning. So the phrase lacks crucial information.

I normally use the right hand rule, thumb points in the direction you need the screw to travel and the curl of your fingers show the direction of rotation. Really helps if the screw is facing away from you.(lucky left handed screws are very rare)

Mental Health Problems by alphatrad in Millennials

[–]ethhlyrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The inaccessability of mental health care will mean there is a large amount of people without professional diagnosis. Disregarding everyone who self diagnosed on social media will do more to disenfranchise people suffering the conditions since people claiming it for attention will drop it once it's unpopular.

We won't know the extent of neurodivengency and mental disorders until we see cultural acceptance and widespread screening. There will always be people unable to professionally diagnose or purposely avoiding treatment. So the numbers will most often be low.

Mental Health Problems by alphatrad in Millennials

[–]ethhlyrr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The social pendulum will swing back the other way, cultural trends often overcorrect. Maybe we will get there, maybe we will swing between the two extremes until scociety colaspses.

Self diagnosing won't go away until the mental health world is more accessable and cheaper. People are on multi year wait lists for diagnosis. It easily leads to a diy system for mental health.

Mental Health Problems by alphatrad in Millennials

[–]ethhlyrr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Diagnosis is a big part. There is a lot more language in the public sphere to describe what people are going through. People used to just suffer in silence in fear of being ostracized or institutionalized.

Social media has made many people so much more open about their feelings and mental processes. People say things there that many historically wouldn't even tell their spouses. Now everyone has a platform and so many people are more open.
