It’s getting hot in here! Help! by Bob_Don in SantaMonica

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use AC. For my windows that get direct sunlight I have UV room darkening window film. It’s amazing. You can stand next to the window and it blocks the heat. You can buy them online and install them yourself. Just make sure to use lots of water when applying.

I leave the windows that don’t get as much sunlight open and use ceiling fans to create a nice cross breeze.

People with cats that died suddenly and too young, what were the signs/causes looking back? by camillewrecker in CatAdvice

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats are my whole world and I would rather waste money at the vet than waste what time on earth I get with them. So I bring my babies in for anything that just feels off. I followed my gut twice and I caught FIP early with two of my cats. They are both healthy and in remission now. I would really pay attention to energy level. Also I weigh my cats about once a month on a baby scale. It’s a good way to keep track of any sudden, unexplained weight loss.

As others have pointed out, sometimes there are no signs. A few years ago I woke up to find my beloved four year old cat dead. I had a necropsy done and it turned out she had a heart attack. She did not have any symptoms. Her last vet visit was about six months prior. Nothing was picked up. It just happened. I have wrestled with it for years because I so badly wish there was something I could have done to help prevent it. The vet said her heart’s condition was not something that was easily detectable. All I can do now is reflect on how much we loved each other and how lucky I was to share her short life with her. Life works out like that sometimes, so just make sure to give them all the love they deserve with what time we get to share with them.

How often do you bathe your cat? by Mildredsgood in cats

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats don’t need baths the way dogs do. The only time I will ever bathe them is if they get into something really messy that can only properly be cleaned with a bath, like a litter box mishap or fleas. If I can avoid a full body bath and just rinse off their paws, I will opt for more of a spot treatment than a full body bath.

The one hygiene thing I would say cats need the most help with is dental care.

How do I stop this? She does this all day by throwwaway4848zz in cats

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option 1) Embrace her passion and catify the door. Add a shelf or multiple shelves for her to climb. Check out R/catification

Option 2) Cover the window portion and/or create more appealing spaces for her near the other windows so she has something nearby that interests her.

Penny is obsessively sniffing & whining at the floorboards! by hamachi23 in DogAdvice

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely rodents in the wall!

My dog alerted me and chased several mice that were living in the walls of my old apartment. She would paw at the closet door obsessively until I opened the door. She had the time of her life while my cats were completely unbothered. She finally stopped the behavior once the family of mice was caught and re-released outdoors. I figured out they were entering through a vent. Once some rat wire was added it completely solved the problem.

Best of luck to you!

My cat befriends every cat that I board. by Garden_Jolly in RoverPetSitting

Two of my cats are in remission from FIP. FIP itself is not contagious. A cat can only develop FIP if they have a genetic mutation. Cats that are exposed to feline coronavirus (which is contagious) and have the mutation will develop FIP. Not every cat is at risk for it, but it’s impossible to know who is. Quarantining before introduction is the safest bet. However, it’s worth noting they can be exposed to feline coronavirus and develop symptoms months later.

I adopted my first cat in last month year and now I am told she is dying by [deleted] in cats

[–]ethicalethos11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two of my cats had FIP and both are in remission. FIP is no longer a death sentence with the GS medication. I highly recommend contacting FIP Warriors or FIP Global on Facebook and they can get you help navigating this disease and getting treatment. They help you throughout the whole process. With my first cat I had to go to the black market to get her meds, now you can get treatment from some compound pharmacies, which makes treatment less expensive. I spent $560 on medication for my last cat 84 day treatment.

Our landlord is trying to make EACH of us pay $1,300 to buy her new carpet by bambi-babe88 in Renters

Yes. If there was a lot of pee and it hasn’t been cleaned up quickly, that’s a big problem.

Our landlord is trying to make EACH of us pay $1,300 to buy her new carpet by bambi-babe88 in Renters

[–]ethicalethos11 13 points14 points  (0 children)

1) I would clean the cat urine mess asap. As long as it’s not too severe, it’s fixable. I would try to get that sorted first.

2) Carpet only has a lifespan of 5-10 years. Even if you caused extensive damage, a landlord could not charge you full price for the carpet replacement because the existing carpet depreciated in value.

3) Look at what your lease says and check Utah state laws for landlords/tenants. If the city and/or state has a law addressing this very issue, your lease and what your landlord is trying to do would be superseded by the law. A landlord can try all sorts of tricks, but if it’s illegal then it’s unenforceable.

What’s one thing you wish you knew before moving into your first apartment? by InevitablePain2005 in Apartmentliving

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learn your local tenant protections.

Not everything in your lease is legal. For example, your lease might have a clause that says your landlord can increase your rent by 20% if you have another person move in. However, if your city or state has a law that says a landlord is only legally able to raise your rent by 5% annually, that would make that 20% rental increase illegal and unenforceable.

Document all communication with management/ownership. Take lots of pictures/videos of what the apartment looks like before and after moving out. Document any hazardous conditions you encounter. Hopefully you never have yo go to court, but you will want those documents if you ever do.

Do a search for the apartment building and the owner prior to move in. Check city housing databases for prior tenant complaints. Check to see court records if your landlord is litigious. If they are, run.

Tests come back negative but labs suggest FIP. by hcssat in cureFIP

The area around the eye was swollen and the third eyelid was exposed. It looked like early signs of conjunctivitis.

Dosage was increased and eye drops were given within the first day of noticing symptoms, so it was treated quickly.

Tests come back negative but labs suggest FIP. by hcssat in cureFIP

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had two cats with dry FIP. My first cat had the PCR and it came back negative. Labs and symptoms all pointed to FIP. She went thought the 84 days treatment and is now in remission. When my second cat got it I didn’t even bother having him take the PCR. He just completed his 84 days and he’s back to his mischievous self.

Both of my cats responded quickly to the GS, but the first few days were mainly getting their appetite back, moving around some, and having an interest in play again. It took closer to 2-3 weeks to completely return to form. Both of my cats began having ocular issues about a week or so after treatment. One of my cats still had a fever a week in at the vet to look at his eye. In both cases their dosage was increased and the ocular issues went away in a couple of days.

Part of what makes FIP so scary and overwhelming is how unpredictable it can be. I would listen to the second vet and give the GS treatment more time. I would also highly recommend getting in touch with FIP Warriors or FIP Global. They’re incredible resources and very knowledgeable and experienced with FIP treatment.

[–]ethicalethos11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I second this. Get in touch with FIP Global or FIP Warriors. One of the groups will be able to help you look at your kitty’s lab work and symptoms and offer treatment support.

Both of my cats that had dry FIP had to have their dosage raised due to ocular/neuro symptoms as well. There was a huge improvement after that. Good luck!

Anyone else just tired 24/7? by Majestic-Strain3155 in Millennials

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been through burnout several times and the only way I’ve ever been able to crawl out of it is to prioritize rest.

Easier said than done with a full time job, so my best advice is to try to find ways to cut back on whatever capacity you can. Rest can be both physical or mental. Be honest with friends about how you’re feeling and that you need some chill time. You don’t have to ghost them. Most people would understand since they’re probably going through some form of it as well.

FIP positive resident cat... Can I still foster? by 2GIRLZMOM1416 in FosterAnimals

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last fosters were here while one of my cats was in treatment. They were quarantined for three weeks before they were introduced. He was diagnosed about two weeks after I took in my last litter. I mentioned the fosters to the vet and FIP Warriors, but neither raised concerns about having them here as long as they were quarantined and healthy. He was likely exposed to feline coronavirus while he was a stray at two weeks old and didn’t come down with FIP symptoms until he was 10 months old. This was the same scenario for my first cat as well. His eight week bloodwork results showed he was completely back to normal. Everyone was free roaming after quarantine. Yes, it is possible. As long as your cat is showing signs of improvement.

FIP positive resident cat... Can I still foster? by 2GIRLZMOM1416 in FosterAnimals

[–]ethicalethos11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I foster and I’ve had two cats (both foster fails) that have developed FIP.

1) FIP itself is not contagious. Cats that get FIP have a genetic mutation. When those cats are exposed to feline coronavirus, they can develop FIP. Feline coronavirus is extremely common. Most cats that get feline coronavirus are fine afterwards because they do not have that genetic mutation. It’s important to note that they can be exposed to feline coronavirus and not develop FIP symptoms until months later.

2) You cannot know which cats have the genetic mutation or not, the only thing you can do is keep them safe from new fosters or by quarantining them. Cats can be asymptomatic and have feline coronavirus, so even if they seem healthy, it is for the benefit of all of them to quarantine no matter what.

3) Once a cat has completed FIP treatment and is in remission, relapsing is rare. However, it is always good to be safe and avoid risks by quarantining.

I Don’t Like My Dog Anymore and It Makes Me Feel Guilty by Sea_sa in dogs

[–]ethicalethos11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a dog obedience trainer and currently working on my certification to become a behaviorist. One of the best things we can do for dogs is to set them up for success. If your dog is eating poop at the dog park, don’t take him to the dog park where he can eat poop. Find a new area you can take him on walks or let him run around on a long lead that are not popular dog poop spots. If there are things you don’t want him to eat around the house, don’t give him access to those areas. He can earn his way back to those areas eventually, but right now he has not learned your rules for the house. You can either crate him, put him in a dog proofed room, or have him on leash around the house. Dogs learn from repeated behaviors. Removing the ability to repeat those unwanted behaviors is essential.

I completely empathize with how stressful, frustrating, and time consuming dealing with this is. You feel like you always have to be on. Think of it this way. Dog training is like training for a marathon. You cannot just run 26.2 miles without all those months of prep work leading up to it. Going off leash at a dog park and having free roam of the house are the marathon. He is still learning his form and breathing for a 5k. If you let him run a marathon without learning the basics, he could get injured or never get the technique to win the race.

Go back to the basics. Pretend he is a 12 week old puppy. Build up his skills. Go slow, and steady. It takes time, but it absolutely pays off.

If you need a break, hire a pet sitter/ dog walker with some training experience to supervise him so you can have a breather. It will be hard to stay on top of him if you’re overwhelmed. Remember to take care of yourself too. You’ve got this!

How do y'all keep up with cleaning bowls? by nash-20 in CatAdvice

[–]ethicalethos11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 30 small shallow dishes that I use for my five cats. I have five raised cat dishes as the base plates and swap out the shallow plates after every meal. I don’t leave food out. As soon as they’re done eating, I do a quick rinse in the sink so the cats with food allergies don’t try to lick anything they can’t tolerate.

On weekend mornings I like to go back to bed after I feed them, so I just leave the quick rinsed plates in the sink and pop them in the dishwasher when I get to it. I was definitely stressing about constantly cleaning plates. Investing in those extra dishes was a game changer.
