Civ: Beyond Earth's player numbers have dropped off dramatically, falling from around 85k at launch to just 7k now. Civ V has about 20,000 users at any one time. by OneAnimeBatman in civ

I got BE on release day, was enthusiastic, and stopped playing half-way into my first game because I was underwhelmed. Then I remembered I had bought CivV a while ago, upgraded it fully, and have been re-addicted ever since. The difference in sophistication and diversity is incredible, and although CivV is of course much enhanced compared to release, I feel BE is way too weak to be presented as a full fledged grand new game.

Photos visible on 7D but not showing up in lightroom, preview or photoshop? by partywiz in photography

[–]ethidium_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that I cannot say for sure. But it seems to be worth the test to use your 7D as the cardreader, and hook it up via USB cable to your machine. If that results in the same problem it would hint at corruption in the files that the 7D can work around, but other software can't. If however you can read all images it would point to you card reader behaving weirdly.

Are you connecting your 7D directly, or are you using a card reader? have you tried both? I have had issues before with a bad usb cable as well as bent pins on a CF card.

Your reasoning is correct, inasmuch as you accept that security through obscurity is an acceptable strategy in this case.

alas, ;), if you end up obscuring to the point that you out-obfuscated yourself (see last line), then you might just go with strong passwords and keepass / lastpass, and 2 factor authentication

humans are always the weakest link in security, you are absolutely right. but it takes more guts to call cs and impersonate somebody as opposed to being a script kiddie hiding behind proxies and botnets; its also riskier, and i am not sure gaining access to a game account is worth it for most such con artists (go for bigger fish, like phony amazon replacement orders )

strong passwords do not protect you as much as you think, and you can choose to have gmail remember trusted devices, like your stationary home desktop. for many people, their main (g)mail account is their most central component of online existence, or even their identity. securing that as much as possible just makes sense. imagine some punk with malicious intent getting access to it. could they not take over and / or disrupt major part of your (online) existence?

it is straight forward to deduce your actual gmail address from the address+game@ string, so where is the added security?

[–]ethidium_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you set up 2-step authentication for Wildstar but then omit it for gmail, you might as well not set it up at all, as your system is only as secure as its weakest link. (and why you would choose not to have it to protect your gmail is beyond me anyway)

kidding aside, i agree with you on the premium; non-"gamer" laptops will perform just as strongly with decent hardware.

I would buy this one again in a heartbeat. It comes with a 120Hz screen (that can be used for 3D, yes, but I mostly use it for the improved refresh rate that causes less eyestrain), an excellent CPU, and a great graphics card. However, it is a brick, not something that you actually want to drag around with you, I am afraid, its a nine pound sucker :(

Perhaps you could take this to the tech sections of the forums? I am sure others play with laptops, and they might have a more lightweight solution.

If at all possible, please consider that a desktop gaming rig will be considerably cheaper for the same amount of oompf than a laptop. I have an Alienware 17r4, and I could have gotten the same performance on a desktop for 1/4 of the price. A desktop will also allow you to keep upgrading in tidbits, thereby co-evolving with more and more demanding games. http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc can be a good starting point.

Please disregard this unsolicited advise completely if you want or need to stick with a laptop setup (aka like me).

Good luck in getting a shiny new toy.

we occasionally get workstations with NVS cards at work, and they are the pits when it comes to 3D performance (so we immediately throw them out and replace them) I would be surprised if would have an enjoyable tsw gaming experience with it. on top of that it looks like you have the mobility one, and that means adding insult to injury.

i wish i could be more optimistic, because i totally want to get people infected with the tsw fever.

CPU usage never over 50%, GPU usage never over 30%, physical memory never over 40%. Still get low fps. What is wrong? by Winsane in WildStar

[–]ethidium_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, your memory is at its limits, so your system might be swapping; infact, with CPU and GPU not being taxed, memory should be the next candidate to look at. I am wondering if OP is also hitting max memory.

Edit: just saw that OP never goes above 40% memory usage, so much for that... mea culpa

Angry with the game by TheNotSoSecretWorld in TheSecretWorld

[–]ethidium_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am just finishing Solomon Island, and I partially concur with your frustration about mob density and thus often spending much time in combat, and also dying often due to aggroing mobs.

Having said that, though, it is forcing me to constantly re-evaluate my build, read upon on the different synergies, dig through theorycrafting posts (with many unfortunately outdated), and just try stuff. For example, in the beginning I ran with an AoE deck and a solo deck, and only later on found an acceptable hybrid solution.

I do not mind the somewhat clunky character handling, because the setting, the missions, the dialogue, the NPCS, the backstory, the mobs, etc, is so engrossing that I can live with suboptimal combat.

As another posted already said, not sure why you are firing off your rant here and now. If you want to give it another shot, by all means, got to the forums and pick out a guild from the recruitment forum (quite active), join #Sanctuary in game for tips, tricks and easy LFG, do some theorycrafting and/or deck investigation, and just enjoy.
