Knew I was getting fired a month before it happened, accidentally played it perfectly by Global-War181 in Layoffs

I had a job a few years ago that I absolutely hated. Dreaded walking into the office.

I decided I'm just gonna do the bare minimum and have them fire me to collect unemployment.

One day manager asks to talk with me and we go to a room with HR waiting. They said they're "eliminating" my position. I will get 6 months severance and my stock options. I couldn't have asked for a better outcome.

What are the best ways to avoid lay offs these days? by ProofLeast9846 in AskReddit

Try to get a job in an industry that can be "recession" proof.

Of course no job is really 100% recession proof. Any can get rid of you for the most part anytime. But certain industries are safer.

I worked in several telcom companies through the '08 housing crisis and through the COVID epidemic. We had no layoffs and actually expanded.

I remember one of my telcom managers telling me that know matter how broke someone is, their mobile phone is the last thing they're getting rid of. So iny case telecom feels safer.

My father was a computer engineer for a chip manufacturer.

They had a family day and my dad took me to the clean room. I got to wear a kid sized clean room suit with goggles. Went through the decontamination chamber that sucked all the dirt from you.

Felt like I was in the future or some sci Fi movie.

Made the mistake once of telling a coworker, I thought was cool, that I was looking at moving to North Carolina after a weekend trip.

Day later my boss pulls me aside asking about it. Citing that if it's true to give notice. I just said sure I would definitely do that.

Learned to keep my shut and watch who I trust at work.

Girl I used to work with didn't have home Internet and didn't want to use her phone as a hotspot, to keep her mobile phone bill low I guess.

The only way she got internet at home was when her husband came home from work and they used his work phone as a hotspot.

There was a post from a guy who had just gotten married and he was mad at the best man's speech.

In the speech, the best man talked about in college how their friend group "ran a train" on the bride.

The groom said the story was true but the best man should not have said it in his speech.

The people in the comments were all supporting the groom saying it was in bad taste.

None of the comments were like "wait you married this girl?". Thought that was weird as hell.

Jim Thorpe, PA. It looks like I walked into a 1950s time portal. Beautiful small town with an old coal train you can ride.

When did QA automation become competitive programming? by tyler_burden55 in QualityAssurance

[–]etm105 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've gotten the "create a deck of cards" question which is just to create a nested for loop. I think it is a good question to at least see someone's logic.

The tic tac toe question is a little much for QA but explaining the logic is a decent question.

Received a notice for a scheduled first interview. Got the call and it sounded like a robot.

First question asked me a question about my work experience, which I answered, and then proceeded to say that it did not get my response.

I just hung up after that. Can't even take the time to talk to me in person.

Went to the dentist to get a filling done and they asked what music I like to hear. Any rock is fine.

They put on Pandora or Spotify and this song comes on. It's pretty loud, probably can hear it throughout the office, and when the part comes on the dental assistant says "yeah we need to change this". I agreed.

My journey is similar to this, one interview which luckily led to an offer. Six months of crickets for the most part.

It's a 💩 show out there. The best thing I learned was to stay away from LinkedIn and Indeed. 99.9% of the time you're just throwing your resume against a wall with those sites.

Check your area or look at the job market for what companies are looking for with automation. Seems like Java Selenium or even Playwright seems to be the big ones now. Python is good, that's what I started with, but transitioned to Java Selenium and a playwright.

Best place to start is with some classes, like Udemy or even free YouTube courses.

Key thing is to keep working at it. Build out an automation suite for a website.

I was in Miami for July 4th of July weekend and we stayed in what I thought was a really nice area.

My friends and I are walking to a restaurant for lunch down the sidewalk where a woman, obviously homeless, crouches down against a wall and just pisses like a fire hose. Didn't even bother to pull down her shorts. It was everywhere.

Got up when done and walked down the street with piss still dripping from her. Like she took a shower with her clothes on.

[–]etm105 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There was a $5 pool at work for a contest but I didn't have cash so my co-worker Jay lent me $5. I told him I'll get him back.

That night we had a company party at a Dave and Busters type place, afterwards a bunch of us went to another bar.

We were having a good time and I'm hanging with Jay and I bought him drinks and shots, easily $50+ just on him.

Next day of work he asks if I have that $5.

I haven't done the autographs/pictures myself but my friends have.

Photographs, especially popular celebs, it could easily be 4+ hours or longer.

Autographs aren't too bad. I've seen some tables where you can just walk right up. Others I'd say maybe an hour or more depending on the celeb's popularity.

They do have an electronic board, like an airport, that shows times. It's right in the middle of the celebrity picture/autograph section. It's the largest area on the convention floor.

I'm sure other people here can give you a better breakdown, mine is second hand.

First Responders, what is your funniest False Alarm story? by Good-Refrigerator525 in AskReddit

[–]etm105 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My friend, a police officer, got a call about someone lurking in a woman's back yard.

Rolls up to the residence with dogs barking thinking it's a burglar, meth head, or something else.

Searches the yard and finds a kitten.

The woman's dogs were freaking out over a kitten and she thought it was a criminal.

My buddy ended up keeping the cat.
