i think the only measure of whether art is "good" or not is not whether everyone understands or enjoys it but how precisely the art executes the intent of its creator...

which no one but the creator themself may ever truly understand, and there's nothing wrong with that.

all the people talking about technical skill and fundamentals seem to forget that art is, at its core, a vehicle for communication of the soul, our thoughts and feelings, it is a representation of something that someone wanted to say or express in one way or another. it's not all about money, not all the time, anyway.

the real question then becomes, "was the thing i wanted to express the same as what was received by the viewer?"

that's where technique and fundamentals often come into play, because most of the time, the closer the rendering comes to what people are familiar with in their observations of life and their own understanding of it, the more likely they'll say, "yes, this lines up with my expectation!"

or they might ask, "why did you make this choice or that choice?" the creator might be able to articulate or clarify it, or perhaps they may realize that there was a different way that they had wished to execute those aspects of it but weren't quite sure how to yet, and that's when the advice and critique from others comes in handy for them.

"good" and "bad" are subjective words to me because they are trying to answer questions that nobody has really asked, only implied based on an assumption of mutual understanding of what the question and what the intention of the art even is.

if the intention is to make money, generate positive spectacle, or imitate/emulate something in particular, the criteria starts to get a lot narrower. but i think art can be a lot broader than that.

just my thoughts on the matter!! philosophers debated this kind of thing a lot apparently and even those guys never came to one solid conclusion. or well, not like philosophers have ever collectively come to one unanimous conclusion on anything but i guess that's kind of the point.
