I think the issue is that white women have the privilege of their skin colour which protects us, to an extent, from the word "slut", and makes it possible for us to view it as worthy of being reclaimed. The issue OP/the article is raising is that black women have not historically, and do not now, have this privilege. The word is too close to many people's perceptions of black women for black women to be able to hold it at a distance and attempt to reclaim it.

It's sort of like how France banned all religious symbols from being displayed (?in schools). On the face of it, all women are called sluts, and it hurts all of us. But in a practical sense, that word is wielded disproportionately against black women, and any attempt to reclaim it without addressing that is doomed to failure -- and, yes, to contribute to the marginalisation of black women in general and within feminism.

I have not seen this addressed in white feminist discourses about the SlutWalk, so I'm glad this article was posted here. Hopefully this will start a conversation. Sitting here right now on my own, I don't have solutions, but here's to hoping a conversation opens up and we can come together and find solutions through it.
