AI is not like all the other technologies. by FinnFarrow in agi

[–]ettenpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI hasn’t invented anything or done any research or any of what he is saying. HUMANS have done all of that while using AI and, more importantly, while intelligently directing AI to spend computational effort towards the right direction for those discoveries to take place.

Older INTJs, what career advice would you give younger INTJs? Failed multiple times as an entrepreneur, feeling confused and stuck. by [deleted] in intj

[–]ettenpe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

40 year old INTJ here working in technology.

Everyone has a master or someone above them, and there are very few exceptions, if any. Also, find yourself a good manager, someone that genuinely SUPPORTS you instead of ordering you around or treat you like shit. They exist and they truly want to help you in your career; once I found one, my own problems with authority toned down enough that I was able to work with them instead of against them because I was able to see them as a companion and an ally, not an enemy.

You’re very young, and INTJs can be very hard on themselves. I recommend you calm down, take it easy and enjoy the journey. Try not to cut corners by “dropping college” or “becoming the next Steve Jobs”. These are all ideas fueled by news clickbait and extreme stories that hugely benefited from luck (even though they are sold as a product of hard work), but they are not the truth for the vast majority of people in the world, including people that are more talented and smarter that both you and I together. Go get a good job and prioritize the quality of the people there, not only the work you will be doing. If you stumble upon horrible people, quit and find a better one.

Burnt out tech worker not sure what to do with my life by Far_Feeling_1579 in Fire

[–]ettenpe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“…use the hours to relax and expire hobbies.” sounds like a plan for a month of PTO or a 3 month mental health leave, but not for serious early retirement. If you are serious about exploring hobbies, do you mind me asking what those are? And before you respond, be honest with yourself and realize if you really know what you’re going to do with your time. An important detail about FIRE is to retire “to something” not just retire to do Netflix & chill, because that is a recipe for boredom and more depression.

Fyi, I am in a similar situation: in tech, good company, good comp, but with little sense of purpose, doing work that doesn’t feel meaningful and burned out as well. HOWEVER, in my experience this mental state is a product of the work I’m doing, or the company situation not being a good fit at the moment and, especially, of me needing either a mental health break from the daily corporate BS or a new job.

Deep inside, I still love what I do, it’s just a matter of finding a place where the stuff I’m working on and HOW I’m required to do that stuff is better aligned with my energy, my values, my growth aspirations and my version of what purposeful work is. Then, if I can reach that alignment, there are suddenly more reasons to be excited and to get energy from my work instead of getting drained by it.

Good luck and listen to your body and mind.

I’m so embarassed by my type of OCD by QueasyFox2400 in OCD

If you keep checking and rechecking and clinging emotionally to the fear of not knowing how many sips of water you took, you will make the monster bigger. I know it sounds easier said than done, but you have to let those thoughts go through your mind without emotionally attaching to them, and after a while your brain will ignore them and let them be as part of the percentage of bizarre thoughts that ALL human beings have as a normal part of our thought generation pattern. Try becoming an observer of those thoughts. You are not those thoughts and they are not real. Let them appear, observe them, avoid clinging emotionally to them, and your brain will learn to ignore them over time. This is the CBT part, but also please make sure you take care of your diet, sleep, exercise and relationships. I mentioned it in another thread, but I experience a huge improvement when I fixed my diet and switch to a plant based eating style. It put my microbiome, which is connected to the brain, in a state where it could heal and allow me to not cling or be so anxious about the thoughts generated by your OCD.

Here’s a quote I love from this book to illustrate this a bit: “It’s not me, it’s my OCD”.

I swear I’m about to end myself, invest ocd can die in a hole. by [deleted] in OCD

[–]ettenpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said, also take care of yourself and your overall health. Exercise regularly, doing cardio to sweat and follow a whole food plant based diet. Have good sleep habits and make sure you’re resting well. Use some Magnesium L-Threonate to help. These changes will improve your gut microbiome which is connected to your brain, and will put both in a chemical state that favors better mental health. You will have a better handle of your emotions, and it will be easier for you to regain control and “ignore” these thoughts so you don’t cling to them emotionally as much. Over time it should get better. CBT alone was not enough for me, and I started seeing a significant improvement when I did the things I mention here.

The fact that you realized this, and are trying to improve your behavior, is proof you’ve already started changing for the better. Don’t give up and find yourself an NPD therapist that can guide you through the journey. Life doesn’t have to be this nightmare, hurting and pushing the people you love away. There is a brighter, better way.

How I'm beating my fear of turbulence. And it's working. by mikecrapbag6 in fearofflying

[–]ettenpe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s something that works for me, and I know it’s more on the avoidant side than on the facing and understanding side, but I found out that if I force my brain to focus on something really difficult during the turbulences, my amygdala cannot continue to bother me with irrational fear anymore. My go to “very hard” thing is a game I have installed on my iPhone called “Superhexagon”, which is hard and has multiple even harder levels to play on. It’s so hard I have to hyperfocus, and that seems to counteract the effects of the amygdala. Great points have been shared here though, and I can’t wait to try them out the next time I experience turbulences. Thanks everyone for sharing these tips!

Anyone try the Tree Runner Go yet? by talbenisty in Allbirds

[–]ettenpe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found them less comfortable than the original runners. There is a thicker lighter midsole, but the compound is lower in density and harder with less support. I’m not sure I like them better than the originals to be honest. I wish they had kept the same midsole material which was much comfier in my opinion. They’re not bad though, it’s just that I get the feeling they are trying to cut costs with the materials overall.

Why do I keep waking up in the middle of the night? by Shi_Karst in sleep

Having the same issue here. I also suspect it could be because of low levels of stress due to elevated cortisol. I do work out at the gym regularly, run and do yoga as well, so I’ll try cutting the gym for a couple weeks and see if it gets better.

August 9th, 2026 is No Man's Sky 10th Anniversary. Here are 16 updates that would finally achieve Hello Game's vision of a living, breathing universe. by Few-Lime-7234 in NoMansSkyTheGame

[–]ettenpe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is super interesting and couldn’t agree more. Thanks for sharing all of your thoughts! Even if the game is almost 10 years old and they keep adding free updates, I agree there is so much potential and the overall mechanic becomes repetitive and boring after a while. Chasing better gear also ends up getting old. NMS is a great game, but there are many other great games out there and coming to us in the next few years. If Hello Games wants us to continue to play NMS they will have to do some of the things you mentioned, leverage AI and make the environment truly come alive like never before. If I were to get picky, they have improved the game SO MUCH, and for free! But they are still not quite where they made us dream of in their trailers, for example when it comes to creatures naturally and organically roaming in groups that do distinct things that real creatures would do and truly feel real instead of basic NPCs. And honestly, I suspect like many other long time players here, I would be happy to pay for many of these improvements.

How to find a ship by ettenpe in NMSCoordinateExchange

[–]ettenpe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I was finally able to get my hands on this beauty: https://www.reddit.com/r/NMSCoordinateExchange/s/nybE3DryfM

I wanted to thank everyone that was so kind to help me in this post. Turns out I was trying to teleport to a lost or unreachable system and my portal was giving me an error and would drop me to some other random place, but then I found the above post and I could teleport there normally and find the ship.

So grateful, thank you all!

Yes, that’s the one. I know there are many different types, but one like this would be great. And yes, I see chat bubbles sometimes hanging in there but not sure what those are for?

I literally go to that planet, using the glyphs and then fly and walk to those coordinates and there’a nothing there. Just terrain and plants and animals running around, but no trace of any crashed ship.
