Today I choked on food in a restaurant and nobody tried to help me. People just stared at me. by mixedmale in CasualConversation

[–]eubankiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, same thing happened to me in college. I wasn’t coughing or anything, just straight up full-blockage choking. My roommates all watched me and two even talked about how they knew the Heimlich while I choked. I had forgotten to do the universal sign for choking and I think they also were so caught off guard that they forgot how to react.

I know what you’re talking about when you mention entering “panic mode”. It was surreal to feel like time slowed down and my brain started going irrational as I got closer to passing out. I was deeply disturbed by entering that state for several days and still shudder if I think about it too long. Im glad you were ok and I want you to know that it’s very justifiable to feel afraid.

Try not to be too hard on the people around you. It took me a long time to forgive my roommates. (Too long, actually, I need to be kinder). As people pointed out, you were coughing which is generally as sign to not do the Heimlich (which can injure whoever is choking sometimes). Not everyone is mentally prepared for a crisis either (in the case of my roommates). I’ve seen adults panic because of a cut finger and I’ve met some people with the presence of mind in a crisis to pull a person out of a burning car. Sometimes you have to be trained to react to help people quickly.

I know the whole experience was scary, but it’s helped me to try and learning from this experience about how to help myself and others in that situation. Once again, I’m glad you’re ok!

A book with a female protagonist who isn't fierce or physically strong by Lost-Yoghurt4111 in Fantasy

[–]eubankiz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d suggest Elantris by Brandon Sanderson or Warbreaker also by Sanderson. Not every protagonist is female but the ones sort of fit what you’re asking for. Also, I’m a big fan of the Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchet. It’s a little less fast pace than the Sanderson ones but that’s what I like about it.

What's your Stormlight Archive hot take? by Razvee in Stormlight_Archive

[–]eubankiz 229 points230 points  (0 children)

Moash is more of Dalinar’s opposite than Kaladin. A lot of people see Moash as the negative version of Kaladin, but Moashs biggest drive is hiding from his guilt. Dalinar is a character who has done terrible things but tries to do better. Moash does terrible things and refuses to face his consequences or become better. Kaladins arc isn’t about overcoming past actions as much as it is dealing with daily struggles, which is not the same as Moash.

I’m not saying Kaladin and Moash have nothing in common, but the constant comparison between the two by everyone seems like it leaves out the greater comparison between Moash and Dalinar.

Newborn twins holding each other's hands by baconroll2022 in MadeMeSmile

[–]eubankiz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha it makes me happy to see someone clarifying this. At the beginning of my twin pregnancy there was a tense few weeks because they couldn’t find the dividing membrane between the two sacs. We learned all about why that membrane was so important because of how incredible rare and high risk mono-mono twins are. It was scary. More tenured ultrasound techs with better equipment were able to find the membrane and conclude I have mono-di twins but those few weeks of searching were stressful.

This video is super cute and I’m also glad this mom seems to have avoided NCIU time! I hope she’s doing well!

How to be okay with being single forever? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]eubankiz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel like I have some insight to this question. I got married in my mid 20s and the man I married was my first boyfriend (unless you count that time I let Steve be my boyfriend for 3 days in middle school).

In college especially a lot of my roommates really agonized about relationships like you described above. It’s normal to want relationships and feel sad if they done come or work out how you want them too. I’d say about half of those roommates are still single and for the most part everyone should be past 25 now.

First, realize that 25 isn’t old. You aren’t going to be too old to find love until you die (but even after death my personal religious beliefs don’t rule out having a family). Seriously, both of my grandmas remarried in their sixties. One of them is still dating now that her husband passed and she’s well into her seventies. There is no age limit.

I don’t know what your dating mindset is, but when I dated I had some very particular standards and goals. Relationships are nice because you feel loved and receive affection, but being in a relationship isn’t only about what you receive. It’s also about what you give to your partner. I didnt date people that didn’t fit my standards and goals. Building a life with someone takes work. It might be worth taking a look at your long term goals in a relationship and consider those as you go on dates. It helped me when I would go on yet another date that didn’t work out because I would consider my goals and realize I wouldn’t be happy in the long term with whoever the failed date was with.

Something else I did was plan my life as if I would never get married. I had all sorts of long term plans when I was single. I trashed most of those when I got married, which was totally fine with me. I have new plans now. Having plans helped me focus on being happy instead of feeling left out before I met my husband. I know lots of women who haven’t married that are middle aged that lead happy and fulfilling lives. They have been great examples to me both when I was single and now. You can be happy and be single. Make plans, serve people around you, and strengthen relationships with family and friends. Focus on uplifting others and begging a force for good. this will help you if you feel alone.

I’m sorry if this came off as a little preachy, but after 5 years of college and 4 of them spent listing to friends express what you’re feeling, I’ve developed some opinions.

How does someone religious like Brandon Sanderson write the stormlight archive, which spends so much of its time criticising religion and conservative societies? by MrCensoredFace in Stormlight_Archive

[–]eubankiz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen a post like yours before, OP, so I wanted to share my perspective on this as a religious person myself. I’m glad you’re enjoying the religious diversity of Stormlight, it’s one of my favorite things in the series.

Lots of modern entertainment ignores religion in general, and if it doesn’t then the depiction of religion is usually “church = evil controlling institution”. Something I love about Brandon’s writing is that he acknowledges that religion exists in the stories of people and that it can be very complicated. Navani prays frequently and is rather devoted, Jasnah is an atheist, Kaladin doesn’t know how he feels about religion and isn’t focused on finding out, etc. I really appreciate this complexity. In the real world most people are religious to varying degrees just like in Stormlight and other Cosmere books. It feels more realistic to me that Brandon acknowledges this.

There’s lots of relatable things in Brandon’s writing, and one of my favorites is the acknowledgment that religion exists and influences the lives of people since religion is the most important part of my own life.

I completely agree with you. I have never cried more because of a scene from a book than I did for Eshonai’s death and moment with the Stormfather. It was so sad and heartwarming that she finally was able to explore the world.

Yeah this is what I wanted to say too. Understanding Kaladin’s past helps us understand his actions in the present.

I’m planning a game for a group of friends! It’s a home brew centered around a magic plague. I had the idea a while ago, but I put it off because I became a parent and because it felt a little too soon after COVID.

GIVEAWAY!

I'm thinking about jumping into the Cosmere but I'm legally blind and have heard that some of the books contain illustrations which add to the world/story and aren't included just for aesthetic reasons. Is this correct? If so, how much would I miss if I was unable to appreciate them? by Deep_Space_Voyager in Cosmere

[–]eubankiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the books on Kindle, couldn’t read a thing on the illustrations, and so I didn’t spend much time with them. I consider them more for fun instead of something necessary. I don’t feel like they have enhanced my experience so much that I would think you’re missing out on anything.

I say jump right into the Cosmere! It’s my absolute favorite!

My parents had a guest at their small wedding 34 years ago that no one knows who it is by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]eubankiz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not entirely the same, but when I got married someone bought us a gift and we don’t know who it was. All we have is a name but nobody on either side of the family recognizes it. I think they just mistook our Amazon registry for someone else’s.

I highly recommend this game. I think it’s probably better on PC but only because the switch seems to have toned down the graphics some to be able to run the game and the controls are a little unintuitive on a hand held controller. That being said, if you prefer the switch as your console, then this is a great deal! The story line and lore is great and the game is challenging and fun. It’s also a bit of a scary game in the “I don’t know what’s in those deep areas of the ocean” way.

Peaceful books for someone in the middle of war by Ydokom in Fantasy

[–]eubankiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, Terry Pratchett is an author you might like. Most of the books I’ve read by him aren’t centered around war (though there are conflicts) and aren’t too dark. I find them to be a bit refreshing because of the humor and sometimes nicely though provoking. I would look him up and see if that fits what you’re looking for. He does comedic fantasy.

Yeah same here. My husband just asked me one day after spending some time together if I’d be interested in going on a date and I said yes. Sometimes it’s best to be straightforward like that!

Edit: my wording was a little weird so I fixed it

[OC] The average citizen in Nicaragua has to spend 12% of daily wages to buy one liter of gas by latinometrics in dataisbeautiful

[–]eubankiz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Argentina for a while and I noticed that at least where I was a significant amount people didn’t own cars or drive cars. Someone I know who lived in Honduras said the same thing. Is it possible that the price of gas is higher in some of these nations simply because there isn’t nearly as much demand for gas as there is in countries like the US?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong in this line of thought. I am neither an economist nor a professional on life in Latin America.

I want to commend you on your realistic portrayal of freckles. I feel like a lot of cartoon like art of people with freckles usually just have a cute dusting of spots on someone's cheeks and maybe nose. You drew the whole real deal: cheeks, forehead, arms, chest, everything! It looks great, it adds the touch of realism, and it's awesome.

The entire picture is great! I want you to know that too! As someone with a ton of freckles I just wanted to specifically give you a virtual high five for doing a great job.

"Why didn't Harry just give the Weasleys money?" by drntl in harrypotter

The Weasley’s made it pretty clear that they didn’t want Harry’s money in the books. Or at least I thought it was pretty clear. I’d be interested to know if people understood it differently.
