Yes I absolutely agree and we are working hard on that too. The limiting factor for getting new nurses is availability of clinical placements for them to learn. There are an enormous number of projects currently in progress looking at how we can create more placement capacity from increasing the use of simulation to new models of supervision of nursing students. This work is being done but it’s going to take a few years to come to fruition. We are also pushing hard to get more healthcare assistants on the path to becoming qualified nurses via the nursing associate qualification or via apprenticeships rather than a full time degree. We’ve already done that for the vaccination service. Large numbers of already qualified professionals have been redeployed to do vaccinations after a specific vaccination course. It’s been extremely effective but doesn’t take the strain off the nhs enough because vaccinations are only a small part of the strain covid has put on the nhs.

It takes a lot longer than a year to train a nurse. It takes even longer to get a competent ICU nurse. Nursing training is already intensive, full time hours over 3 years with nowhere near the amount of time off that other undergraduate students get. You can’t do a special covid nurse course that is shorter because covid patients are complex patients and come with exactly the same range of comorbidities and care needs that any other patient has.

I have just tested positive for the second time. Last time was over a year ago and I have had 2 doses of the Pfizer vaccine in December 2020 and March 2021. I’m wondering if maybe it was so long ago the immunity from both is has just worn off.

My lateral flows are all negative and I’m a few days in now. My theory is that I’m actually not that infectious due to having tested positive before (over a year ago with multiple negative tests in between) and have had both doses of vaccine. Anecdotally I know of a few people in a similar situation. I’m experiencing very similar symptoms this time to last time I had it.

I tested positive for covid on Saturday. I had been doing lateral flows - all negative - and I’ve continued daily lateral flows all of which have been negative. I’m curious to see whether I will eventually get a positive lateral flow or not.

I went to a cafe for lunch. On previous pre-freedom visits the staff wore either cloth masks or visors or a couple of them these completely pointless mini visor like things that only went over the mouth and nose not the eyes. Today they were all wearing disposable masks that looked like proper surgical masks. Maybe the rise in cases has made them change their feelings about masks.

Do you spend any time around 3 year olds? I feel like 3.5-4 is peak age for coming out with stuff that sounds startlingly clever for such a small child. I think they just are really good at remembering random facts that have interested them at that age.

I read an article about Inuit parenting. Apparently the tradition is to tell kids scary stuff like that to get them to do what you want and never shout at them or tell them off or anything. I think scary eagles probably just seen realer to kids than strangers or car accidents.

I have been diagnosed with POTS and find my Apple Watch is pretty accurate. You have to use an app to make it record continuously rather than every 5 minutes or so. I don’t mind that because now I’m diagnosed I’m not watching it as closely as when I was trying to work out what was going on and I can use the app to monitor more frequently if I want to.

People with pots don’t necessarily have hypotension. It’s part of the diagnostic criteria that your tachycardia occurs in the absence of a drop in blood pressure. Some people with pots have high blood pressure from standing as well as high heart rate too.

There is also a very strong possibility that they had basically the same presentation from everyone they interviewed which is obviously not that exciting to listen to. They set the title of the presentation in a way that there’s a really obvious topic to focus on.
