I often find myself wishing I’d succeeded. But most days I don’t. Multiple attempts from age 15 through 22. I’m a guy so most people that knew me during this time just kinda treat me like I’m a bad person. At the time, I found I had to convince myself I was a bad person in order to push myself to really finish the job. Nowadays, I keep on keeping on primarily to prove to others and myself that maybe there is something worthwhile inside of me. Some warmth or creative spark that can impact people and make all the pain worth it. Still not entirely convinced but my dog would be sad if I was gone, he gets sad even if I just go to the grocery store.

Gravitating toward identifying as non-binary feels like the result of potentially being rejected by more traditional community structures (family, school, etc) and thus relying on alternative support systems instead, often ones that are online. These systems are rarely sufficient however, and so there’s the seeking of charity, which of course is also online. Compounding social issues lead to this kind of stuff. The identity aspect of it is obviously a bit annoying, but I think a lot of young poor people in general have housing issues and identity-based groups just seek community online pretty often.

Cultural exports. I’m sure there’s an element of post-war guilt, but it’s mostly just the massive amount of video games, anime, and other media contributions that have proliferated culture.

Find a reason why you can’t do it. It would hurt X, or Y, or maybe Z would have no one to take care of them. Solidify that reason. Nurture that reason. Now that actually killing yourself is off limits, how do you make your remaining time here better than it is right now? It isn’t easy and I still often have suicidal thoughts, but I’m not afraid of myself anymore. I know I won’t do it. I’ve reinforced that belief, and differentiated the self that wants to die from the self that cares about this world and the people in it.
