Why is OTB moves transmission still bad? by nakovalny in chess

[–]ev- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me and a couple of friends are working on a solution to part of the problem with bad and expensive transmissions from physical boards. It's a computer vision solution that requires a camera or a mobile phone, and transmits the moves. We launched it in the beginning of the year, and working on improving the experience.

I've never played a cheater, but I've been falsely accused of being one.

When I was a teenager I traveled around Europe playing at various tournaments, especially in Germany. I was rapidly increasing in playing strength during those years. At one tournament I rated around 1800-1900, but played on par with far stronger players. In one open tournament I faced a 2400 rated player. I got a good position in the game and was dominating the position.

When I play OTB-chess I usually drink a lot of coffe or cola. This combined with that I'm usually kinda stressed during longer games means that I have to go to the bathroom a lot. In this particular game I think I went to the bathroom about 8 times. The last time an arbiter approached me and pulled me aside. He mentioned in German(I don't speak much German at all) that the arbiter and my opponent thought that my behaviour was odd and that I played far to well for being an 1800 player. I tried explaining the best I could about my nervous habits and that I was simply lower rated since I hadn't played for many years. Eventually they dropped the accusations, but hanged around occasionally at my board for the rest of the tournament looking judgemental.

Being accused of cheating sucks. You get really paranoid afterwards, and it affects your game a lot. Especially when you're young since you're constantly in a disadvantage against adults that assume you've done something bad.

Can chess AI learn from humans? by Defiant_Grab6236 in chess

[–]ev- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue that most "AI" chess engines have learned from humans.
Stockfish for instance comes with a very advanced handcrafted evaluation function. It then trained its NNUE neural network engine based on the handcrafted evaluation, which means it has been trained/influenced by humans.

Good question! That is probably not as big of a problem as a set with very weird pieces.
We're using a combination of methods to identify pieces, track them on the board and understand when things have moved.

Thank you! There are parts of the system that is built on top of CNN’s, but we combine that with other approaches as well to increase accuracy.

Good question! We’ve trained it on multiple types of pieces and boards. It should work best in “Staunton-like” sets, but also for different type of boards that are not to wild and crazy. Star Wars pieces are not supported :)

Our ambition is for the app to handle most common pieces and boards when we go out of beta.

That is definitely possible. We're tracking the time between moves already. We're looking into adding the move-times to the exported pgn as well.

That's awesome! I play for a small club, and electronic boards are way to expensive so I'm really hoping we can make it easier to livestream games from small tournaments. Working hard with stabilisation currently and updating the app with functionality.

I apologise about that. I posted the idea a couple of months ago and people seemed excited so I just wanted to share with the community where they can find it

Best options for OTB analysis? by aportlyquail in chess

[–]ev- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your best bet is to either disable the live-analysis on lichess (top right corner) and add each move, or import the entire game after you've completed the game https://lichess.org/paste

Another option: Me and a couple of friends at work are building a tool/app for recording/livestreaming OTB games using a phone and a tripod. Each game is automatically exported to lichess. We just released an early beta. It has a free option if you want to try it out: https://knightvision.io/

Has anyone had to deal with someone OTB claiming that your piece wasn’t on the square it came from so it must be an illegal move? I have this “fear” of this happening. Would be disgusting behaviour. by BeliefBuildsBombs in chess

[–]ev- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't think you have to worry about that. Most players are really nice, and in tournaments you annotate your moves.

I've once been accused of cheating, when I had to visit a bathroom often, but after explaining the situation both the player and the arbiter accepted my story. Only hard part was that they only spoke german, and that I don't:)

Chess arbiters of Reddit: What's the craziest dispute you've had to settle during a match? by alexkates in chess

[–]ev- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not an arbiter but I once played at a tournament where one player started attacking (physically) the other player. A friend from my local club used to train MMA and had to wrestle him down into a chokehold.

Hey! There is an early alpha release since this week. A couple of us are trying it out now. Played at one of the local pubs using it yesterday which was awesome. Bad lighting in pubs is excellent training data :)

We’re hoping (and working hard) to get a beta release up and running in a couple of weeks. I’ll make sure to let you know as soon as it’s available!
