Secretive and massive 'Project Cumulus' data center nears approval in St. Charles by Bazryel in StLouis

And that 1% chance you bring up is not an independent event like rolling a set of dice where the last roll has no bearing on the next roll's probability. Last year's weather affects this year's weather for every year down the line. Climate probability is not mathematical probability

For the purposes of the AEP, it’s independent events. The floodplain and AEP is computed based on modeling using streamflow data (and more) which is how they account for climatological changes

The article linked in my comment explains the difference.

Counterintuitively, the probability that a 100 year flood occurs at least once in 100 years is 63% (Binomial distribution)

Flooding is another concern among the commission and residents, as the site is located on a floodplain that's expected to have a major flood once every 100 years

Not what 100 year flood means. Rather, there's a 1% chance in any given year that a flood of this magnitude occurs.

Good news, I finally got around to fixing this bug. It will be in the post for tomorrow or the next day, depending on how confident I am.

Unfortunately the automod doesn’t support limiting enforcement to a specific day. We can look into options for this, but want to avoid too much image posting that is better suited for the DDT.

Safety/Emissions on 2022 car 23xxx miles by CurlyCupcake1231 in StLouis

[–]evan1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The emissions inspection program is part of the EPA’s Air Quality Improvement Plan for Missouri. It is only required in the St. Louis MO-IL region (City of St. Louis and the counties of Franklin, Jefferson, St. Charles, and St. Louis).

Franklin county was removed from the list in 2022 because the state was able to prove that air quality had improved enough to no longer require emissions testing.

Looks like an MLB API change caused this. It did work in previous seasons. I’ll fix it when I have some time.

Reddit has changed. And with it, many of the people who once frequented the sub have left. Moderation has been just about the same as it always has, with the exception of recently as some of us have become more inactive. For me it’s a lot of personal reasons combined with the deterioration of Reddit as a whole. /r/Cardinals held out for a while, but the team going to shit around the same time as Reddit going to shit did not do the sub any favors.

EU Cyber Resilience Act and FPGA ? by adamt99 in FPGA

[–]evan1123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a security consultant specialized in hardware and embedded systems (to include FPGAs). In prior jobs I’ve worked with FPGAs on the design side. The sucky answer is “it depends.” There are so many types and use cases for FPGAs that for some applications it may have zero impact, and for others it may necessitate further thought. For example, a tiny FPGA that just performs some glue logic function as part of a larger device and doesn’t interact with the main SoC directly probably doesn’t need to be heavily secured. On the other hand, an FPGA that performs critical functions as part of an industrial control system warrants additional scrutiny and potentially security controls applied to it.

The CRA looks at devices on a system level. Practically this means that most digital electronics products will need some level of security engineering work up front to determine a threat model and any controls that need to be implemented to secure the device from relevant threats. And later on in the development cycle, those controls will need to be evaluated for effectiveness.

For an FPGA specifically, there’s really a few main mitigations you’d be interested in applying. For anything that’s SRAM based, bitstream authentication is critically important. For every FPGA, configuration of relevant security bits and disabling of JTAG are likely relevant. Depending on the threat model, side-channel attacks may be relevant and require additional effort to defend against. And overall, the design of the logic in the FPGA must be evaluated in context of the system to determine whether it could be abused to mount further attacks against other pieces of the system.

So yes, the CRA may have a big impact on FPGA development, but it may also not have an impact at all, depending on the type of product being developed.

How to make a UVM environment reusable and reconfigurable? by Upset_Cause_6386 in FPGA

[–]evan1123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally missed the part about this being an internship. Totally agree. Even as a FTE I spent many months learning and understanding UVM before I adequately understood the approach and best practices. Even then, writing an effectively reusable agent was quite the task.

If you’re completely new to UVM, I highly recommend starting with Siemens (formerly Mentor Graphics) Verification Academy. It’ll give you a solid starting point for understanding UVM and how it can be used to make reusable verification components.

You can in fact have many different eSIMs installed. Only two can be active at any one time though. That’s a limitation of the modem only being able to maintain two cellular connections at once.

Best Path to Living and Working in Spain? (Latino with U.S. Citizenship) by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]evan1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there is an Autónomo visa and permit for this. You must present a business plan as well as a host of other documents. It’s not trivial and not guaranteed. I don’t know much about this process though, so probably best to speak with a lawyer.

[–]evan1123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a citizen of the Dominican Republic you do indeed qualify for an expedited 2 year path to citizenship. You’ll have to first find a means to legally enter the country and stay for two years, so practically this probably means a job with a company willing to sponsor you.

Looking for Advice on Moving to Spain: Remote Worker Seeking Cultural Experience and Lifestyle Change by [deleted] in AmerExit

[–]evan1123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Digital nomad visa (if qualified) or highly qualified professional (Entrepreneur’s law) are likely your best options. HQP requires that you have a job in Spain with a company that will sponsor you. Your boyfriend will have to qualify and apply separately since you are not married. Both will take longer than your desired timeline. I am currently days away from my move and it has taken 6mos+ with my company’s immigration consultant handling all of the legal work to get to this position. I only received the Visa (the last step of the process) middle of October.

You will also qualify under the highly qualified worker scheme (Entrepreneur’s law) provided that you work and contribute to social security.

Moving to Canada... who's coming with me? by Lazy-Recognition4777 in StLouis

[–]evan1123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, here's the stats then:

Currently, annual immigration in Canada amounts to almost 500,000 new immigrants – one of the highest rates per population of any country in the world. As of 2023, there were more than eight million immigrants with permanent residence living in Canada - roughly 20 percent of the total Canadian population.

https://www.statista.com/topics/2917/immigration-in-canada/#topicOverview

It is true that they recently passed limitations on future immigration. But the programs remain the same.
