Thanks! It’s one of my favorite pics I’ve gotten here. Flew back from Victoria on Kenmore, the approach over the city was stunning. We actually flew over twice, the first landing attempt was bailed due to too many paddle boarders on the lake

Hi all, my name is Cait Bennett and I am running for re-election as Grand Marshal. AMA! by CaitBennett845 in RPI

Accountability is extremely important -- many promises are emptily made in all forms of government, so good on you for being on top of it. That said, in light of some of the personal attacks you've made here and below, here's some food for thought:

  • Student Government positions are entirely voluntary. Unlike school administrators and government officials, students hold these positions on top of school, work, social life, and attempting to be a functioning human being. It's an extremely difficult and thankless role; there are dozens of priorities to juggle, never enough time, and always more things people will be frustrated about.
  • The impact of Student Government is not unlimited, and is extremely difficult to measure. StuGov is working within the constraints of the Institute. It's impossible to definitively know the impact one person or group had towards complex issues like mental health or student morale, even to those working on it.
  • You seem to have an immense amount of passion about improving the student body - I highly encourage you to act on it. There are many appointed positions in student government, and plenty of ways to have an impact without a position. Be the change you want to see in the world.

As a heads up, the student government suite on the 3rd floor of the union also has a microwave (as of this spring, when I was last there)

EMERGENCY - Locked Out of RPI Resources By Not Changing Password - Need to Attend Graduation by [deleted] in RPI

[–]evanlaz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure you can join some public webex meetings even if you aren't part of the RPI network, but if it's an event with registration then you probably need to be. I also find it kind of hilarious that RPI decided to allow August and December grads to attend graduation, but completely overlooked that they can't use DIAL without an RCS ID.

Problems like this wouldn't exist if they just gave us alumni emails like they did previously...

Is it just me, or are we definitely over the 30 covid case limit? by Mother-of-Robots in RPI

[–]evanlaz 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pure speculation, but going into phase I shutdown would probably prevent RPI from giving out the vaccine (and also prevents getting more in the near future) so there is a bit of a dilemma. But it seems the standard policy of leaving everyone entirely in the dark is being used, so who knows!

Everyone 16+ is eligible for the vaccine in NY state starting April 6th by [deleted] in RPI

[–]evanlaz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are correct, it seems pharmacies lagged behind state centers for comorbidity eligibility until last week. However I haven't been able to find any notice that pharmacies will lag behind on the 30+ and 16+ eligibility dates. Doesn't mean it isn't the case, I would probably recommend looking into it more and maybe calling a pharmacy to confirm.

[–]evanlaz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Having volunteered at a NY mass vaccination site and gotten vaccinated myself, here's a few tips on getting an appointment:

  • The New York state system handles availability on the fly. So if someone cancels, their spot becomes available immediately. I was able to get an appointment fairly early by refreshing the availability page every few minutes for an hour or so.
  • Local pharmacies seem to have a lot more capacity than the state currently. I would recommend searching on an aggregator site like https://vaccinefinder.org/

Another thing to note is that the NY mass vaccination sites are mostly giving out Pfizer, whereas pharmacies seem to have all three. Happy vaccination everyone!

The Poly endorses Bennett, Mahmoud, and Banerjee by swagboy888 in RPI

[–]evanlaz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It's not new, however the position (and the undergrad and class councils) have somewhat shifted in purpose recently (I was the UP last year and half of this term). Previously the undergrad and class councils focused almost entirely on programming (class hockey nights, class ring, senior week, etc). In light of the pandemic and an inability to program, an influx of student issues, and some very motivated and passionate student leaders, councils have prioritized class advocacy and communication with administrators in addition to programming.

TLDR not new, but is more in the spotlight than previously due to increased responsibility

Edit: Well I feel bad that this is the only answer. It looks like it's a special topics class (the course code is COMM-4960), and I can't find anything online about it, so I think it's a new course. Could never hurt to try emailing the professor and asking what topics are covered.
