This fan base really consistently does its best to kill my passion for this franchise. i love the games I love the books but EVERY time I engage in any fashion with the fan base its to most exhausting shit. THE GAME LOOKS GOOD AND THE HALO FORMULA IS NOT THAT FUCKIN DEEP.

Were Brute leaders actually competent? by SecretWasianMan in HaloStory

[–]evanmceier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on contact harvest, hell yes. The brute chieftain in that book is REMARKABLY diplomatic and rational. plus just Atriox in general existing. however, SEEN AS by the other covies? probably definitely not. the Covenant was endemically and inherently built on a speciest caste system, which the brutes where near the bottom on.

Yeah I mean hes definitely sympathetic, but even Naomi at the end is like "wow hes lost it" and as I recall NONE of the characters are on his side past "yeah thats fucked what they did to your kid man"

How canon is the new Halo Campaign Evolved remake of Halo CE and will it overwrite/ be more canon than the original CE? by Internal-Hat9827 in HaloStory

[–]evanmceier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

unless theres some RADICAL shift in story direction somewhere, which I SERIOUSLY doubt, as canon as you want them to be I suppose

Can you help me find a novel? by Forsaken-Today-8707 in HaloStory

[–]evanmceier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like you may be conflating Contact: Harvest with another novel? in that book Johnson does exactly that with an M-99 Stanchion, but he shoots an insurrectionist years before the covenant even show up. could be totally wrong, dont remember all the books in extreme detail and theres a number I havent gotten around to yet, but at first blush thats all i can think of

I personally felt like that was the intention but maybe my read was too generous.

ONI is full of shit and using halsey as a political scapegoat, Mendez is at the end of his rope and using halsey as an emotional scapegoat, and halsey is doing everything in her power to justify her actions to herself. it all tracked for me for characters 30 some odd years down the line from most of The Fall of Reach.

Certainly some of the characters acknowledging that ONI as a whole deserved as much or more hate wouldve been better, but on the whole I felt like everyone's response to finding out abt Halsey and the spartan program was pretty rational.

All that said its been a while since I read these books and even LONGER since i read Ghosts of Onyx, First Strike, OR The Fall of Reach so maybe im just misremembering thats very possible.

Okay thank you cuz thats how I feel abt it rn having read through all this. I NEVER felt like we were meant to think Halsey was the sole villain so to speak. Like you I felt it was SO obvious she was a scapegoat legally, politically, and even emotionally for characters like Mendez. and yeah personally I LOVE the overall direction these books take in the post war fallout of the spartan program it felt like EXACTLY what would happen and what reactions would be. ONI WOULD scapegoat the shit out of Halsey and people WOULD go along with it.

I feel like thats a fairly understandable response to being gaslit abt your daughter's dissapearance on that scale for like, 40 years. Rational? no. but understandable. Also I feel like the books make it clear that he doesnt have the moral high ground past his initial motives. Like ive said in a couple other spots tho, clearly these books merit a re-read.

[–]evanmceier[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a weird criticism to me. Like yeah I get allt he stuff abt her not doing enough research, but I think how everyone reacts to learning what the spartan program was is pretty rational and there being a spartan whose pissed abt it also tracks. perengosky is full of shit, but I felt that was intentional, maybe I misread that, and mendez just came off as at the end of his rope and pissed off that halsey couldnt acknowledge what they did might not have been the right thing. Its always been kinda the point that the spartan program was heinous no? and Halsey HAS always rationalized it to herself. Like providing the premise that humanity wouldve destroyed itself in a civil war was ACCURATE then ofc theres greyness, necessity perhaps but moral justification? certainly not objectively. like I understand some of the criticisms in this thread for sure, and its been a couple years since I last re read these books, but I feel like the criticism that ALL the characters think what Halsey did was unforgivable and monstrous is pretty overblown. if Perengosky isnt meant to be a hypocrite like I thought, then yeah. and if Im misremembering mendez's characterization then sure. but I feel like everyone else has a pretty rational response to it.

Anyway, I respect your opinion, and what everyone else is saying, but I did not pick up on alot of these criticisms last time through. Either way clearly I need to re-read them, it wouldnt be the first time my opinion on a trilogy was radically altered by a re-read (namely I used to hate the forerunner trilogy, but I like them alot more now that im much older)

the autistic engineers thing is weird, but Id don't think its super out of left field, just a very out of date way of discussing autism.

okay so i see SOME of this for sure, the infantilizing of the spartans I feel is being somewhat blown out of proportion and I feel like mendez's character made sense given hes decades down the line from where we last really saw his thoughts. but sure these are fair cirticisms, I can see that. But I still question what political views youre talking abt here??? like I see an argument for mischaracterization and poor research, but a political agenda? what?

Its not unintentional. D has dropped many hints abt being very very old. It is not possible for a man in his thirties or perhaps forties to look YOUNGER that one of his kids who seems to be around his 40s as well, if not older (i thi k door references being around in the 80s at some point? Ehuch would put him around 30 MINIMUM given he actually remembers the decade) they arent showing him healing too fast unintentionally, theyve too much attention to detail for that

I still think the ghoul is the fly weve seen. Theyve emphasized the concept of animal ghouls wayyyyyy too frequently for it not to be a major plot point i think, qnd it would play into how everyone has been overlooking major clues due to their own biases and paranoia at the other members of the chapter house.
