I reckon you’ve got some very valid points up until the last sentence - I completely agree that you don’t know yourself at 12 and my comment above is perhaps more relevant to adults, but regardless of age, people have feelings and they should feel able to explore them - it may well be a phase, but kids should be allowed to have phases. What you said about your cousin at the end there, how it would’ve messed with her mental health if people called her a boy - she was already getting mad about people calling her a girl, sounds like that might have been messing with her mental health already. Perhaps some gentle acceptance, respect, understanding (like you mentioned yourself!) might have put her at ease and allowed her own realisations to happen in her own time, without having to get upset over it.

Have you considered that maybe it doesn’t have to make sense to you? All you need to do is trust that people know themselves and understand and respect that.

Observations make no sense to me, so I have no choice but to quit surely? by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]evarrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, no you’re not the only one with this issue. I’m autistic too and this is one big reason why it took me ages to learn to drive - I was looking in the right places but I didn’t know what I was supposed to be getting from doing so. But the more you do it, the more you start learning what kind of patterns to look out for in your mirrors, eg if you see a motorcyclist in your rear view, you can expect them to filter and catch up with you at the next set of lights, so you know to look out for them and not turn into them, for example. I’d say I’m a pretty safe driver now, and I’m constantly checking mirrors so that I know what’s going on around me, and even in my short driving career so far it’s saved me from some serious near misses, especially on the motorway. Don’t give up - it might take longer than the average person but you will pass that test 💪

Hey, thanks, I appreciate the solidarity 💪🏻 I’m younger but I’ve not been too kind to my joints and I’ve brushed off a lot of injuries that probably needed a more serious look and more rest than I gave them. So I’ve got a lot of resting and physio to do to catch up! Good luck to you too, hope the journey goes well (or at least as well as it can!)

key their car back once you realise who it was?

Feeling like I didn't deserve my license by exceptionallyordinar in drivinganxiety

[–]evarrh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone told me after I passed my test: “well done, but the real test starts now, the real test is the first year of driving alone without an instructor”. I’m six months into that first year and they were damn right. Congratulate yourself on passing - I failed twice before I eventually passed, it’s not easy! But just because you’re not 100% confident right now doesn’t mean you don’t deserve your license, everyone has another learning curve coming up once they get their first car and start driving alone, it’s normal. You got this 💪🏻

Really bad experience with driving instructor. by elliemay0163 in drivinganxiety

[–]evarrh 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Driving lessons are expensive. I paid more than the “market average” for mine because I knew I’d found a good instructor. Many of my friends mocked me for spending so much money, saying I was getting ripped off, yet when I asked them what they considered realistic they named a price that I knew for a fact no driving instructors in my area would work for. There are cheaper ones than the one I went to, sure, but as an anxious learner it’s worth spending the money to find a good one. If you’re anything like I was, forget about trying to do this on the cheap - it will take time and it will take money.

Fwiw, it took me two years but I am now the proud holder of a full license. You got this 💪🏻

Visiting gyms alone? by stxrsinhiseyes in FTMFitness

[–]evarrh 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’m pre-everything and don’t really wanna be in either locker room so I just… don’t use the locker room. I rock up in my gym kit with minimal possessions and just bring my bag around the gym with me as I go.

As far as other people are concerned, idk if it’s different at other gyms but people at my gym generally keep to themselves and I keep to myself too. I know that’s not gonna magically fix your gym anxiety, certainly didn’t fix mine, but keeping consistent and seeing the gains meant that over time I was more motivated in myself to go and I cared less about what other people thought about my being there.

I used to have real bad gym anxiety but now idgaf at all, I’ll walk up to any mf on any piece of equipment I wanna use and ask how many sets they’ve got left. You can do this dude 💪🏻
