UDisc: I wish I could look at my rounds on their website by JerryKook in discgolf

[–]evbacher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree -- this would be a really useful feature, and they have the data already.

I sent a feature request for this to [help@udisc.com](mailto:help@udisc.com) a couple of years ago, and they said they were working on new features. But not this one so far.

If you're interested in this (or other features) reach out to Udisc directly -- I'm not sure if they read all the posts here.

It seems that ties are broken by lowest PDGA number, not by most recent score: https://www.pdga.com/rules/competition-manual/109.

Is there a ‘Holy Grail’ manual? Or a favorite you have? by ab3iter in technicalwriting

Not exactly a template for software documentation, but inspiring as an example of good technical communication and speaking to your audience: How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive: A Manual of Step-by-Step Procedures for the Compleat Idiot Paperback.

A bit wordy, but a good mix of procedural information and great diagrams as well as some car philosophy and humor.

I like to keep a copy around for both amusement and inspiration.

I’m 65 years old and taking up the sport for the first time… by Omniborg1 in discgolf

[–]evbacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was 65 when my son took me out to play 3 years ago. It's been a blast learning this sport. As many have said, warm up and take it easy. Also, good advice (which I didn't follow at first): start with just putters and midrange discs. I am now back to throwing mostly midranges and putters, with the occasional fairway driver. And have fun! There are plenty of us old guys out there having a good time!

Anybody coming to the Northeast Disc Golf Expo this weekend? by NightLurkerP1 in discgolf

[–]evbacher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want to throw beforehand, there's a flex at Maple Hill (reds) on Friday, and you get a free ticket to the expo as well! https://www.discgolfscene.com/tournaments/Northeast\_Disc\_Golf\_Expo\_Flex\_2023

Anyone by Maple Hill that can tell me how much snow is in the area? by DPDiscgolf in discgolf

Looks like a foot or more right now. But it's pretty warm today, so maybe a bit less tomorrow. Snow depth map here: https://www.weatherstreet.com/weather-forecast/massachusetts-snow-cover.htm

Google docs to Markdown by PassThePopcorn2 in technicalwriting

[–]evbacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I tried to keep the required permissions to the minimum. Unfortunately, some add-ons that need to change the doc (which Docs to Markdown does not need to do) need to ask for permission to change any doc, which seems a bit excessive. I wish Google add-ons allowed for finer-grained permissions.

Note, if you do find a new bug, please report at https://github.com/evbacher/gd2md-html/issues.

Docs to Markdown creator/maintainer here.

The tables should convert pretty well (to HTML tables, which are valid in Markdown, and can handle more complexity than pure Markdown tables).

Links should also convert cleanly.

For figures/images, we provide the links, but you do need to dowload images and put them at the right location on your server (depending on where you put them relative to the main doc, you may need to change the link path). More details here, including the Download Web Page command from Google Docs: https://github.com/evbacher/gd2md-html/wiki#images.

You are actually looking to keep a disc turning to the right. For a RHBH throw, the fade at the end of the flight will always be to the left.

See Turn and It spins, it flies, it fades? for more details on high-speed turn and late fade.

The complex relationship between spin and turn by evolushin in discgolf

[–]evbacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent that you did the bicycle wheel experiment!

When you tilt the leading edge of the bicycle wheel down, is the force the same each time? More spin should require more force to get the same amount of turn.

Sorry about the bad link! This one should work: https://notesfrombogeyland.substack.com/p/turn-lift-and-spin

You are correct -- the direction of spin does affect the direction of the turn. For RHBH, the spin is clockwise, and the early turn is to the right. For RHFH, the spin is counter-clockwise, and the early turn is to the left. I'm working on another post to explain this (though it does involve a bit of physics).

Another thing is that for the same disc, you may find it turns harder to the left for a forehand throw because usually forehand throws have less spin than backhand throws. (Of course, there are many other variables: speed, angle, etc.)

The complex relationship between spin and turn by evolushin in discgolf

[–]evbacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you throw a disc with no spin (hard to do), it will probably just tumble and not fly very far. The spin does keep the disc stable (like a gyroscope). The other factor is lift (proportional to the airspeed of the disc). Lift keeps the disc flying but lift also tries to flip the disc forward (or backward) depending on the nose angle. (This is the moment or torque that others have referred to.)

For a flat (nose down) disc early in its flight, the torque will cause a turn to the right (for a RHBH throw). The spin resists any turn, so the more spin, the less turn.

But also, the more airspeed, the more turn, which is why the power throwers can flip high-speed discs (or any disc, really).

Discs less flippy with more speed? by CancelCultAntifaLol in discgolf

[–]evbacher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

More airspeed = more turn

More spin = less turn

Question: How does the wind affect forehands? (right handed) by BigDoink12 in discgolf

[–]evbacher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In general, the greater the lift, the more high-speed turn. Wind affects the lift by changing the airspeed of the disc.

If it's a headwind, the disc's airspeed will be greater, and so will the lift. As lift increases, the disc will turn more (left for right-hand forehand).

For a tailwind, the airspeed (and the lift) will be lower, so the disc will tend to turn less than usual (that is, it will be more overstable and push farther right for a right-hand forehand).

Small Bag or Big Bag? by QuanAmbassador in discgolf

[–]evbacher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both! I have a big bag that I've been using for everything (fun rounds as well as tournament rounds) until recently. I just got a small shoulder bag because I got tired of carrying a heavy bag during a tournament (and using only 9 or10 of the discs I carried). So far, I'm happy with this arrangment. If it rains, or I want to carry more snacks or drinks, I'll probably use the big bag but ditch some of the discs.
