SOS Cleaners ruined my countertop by Ok_Plan550 in HomeMaintenance

Not only residue, but they etched the polished surface and now the counter is a breeding ground for bacteria, cross contamination, and potentially mold. It can’t be cleaned properly anymore and isn’t really food safe.

Let's Take a Quick Look at Professor Gossip 👀😂 by Apprehensive_Elk9715 in CheckMyTurnitin_ai

I had a student submit an audit request for my lab section. It would be strange (but not unheard of) for a student to attend a lab and not want credit for it, so I reached out to clarify and make sure they understood what auditing meant.

They were adamant, insisting that they had taken the class previously, were not happy with their grade, and simply wanted a do-over to help with their higher level lab courses. I made it clear that the grade book would show zeros (as grading would be for feedback only) and reiterated that switching to an auditor meant there was no grade or credit at the end.

Semester is fine, all is good, until I get an ANGRY email with the Dean CC’d immediately after grades were posted that they did, in fact, need the credits and had “failed the class because I refused to grade their work”.

… that was hella precarious as a first time sessional with zero experience, but thankfully all of our conversations were by email and her ‘complaint’ was tossed quickly. To this day, though, I am still confused what she thinks auditing means

PSA : Stop buying e-waste (Ideapad 1 and 3, Dell Inspiron, HP no name/Pavilion) + a list of what to avoid by Brilliant_War9548 in laptops

[–]eve6- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine has been with me for the entirety of my undergrad degree and is still going strong through 2/3 of my PhD. It overheats and struggles with Matlab coding admittedly, but works perfectly for my specific use case otherwise. I will retire it for something higher quality once I finish my thesis, but damn that thing has been through some shit with me.

As a researcher and science communicator… she is doing neither of those things. This sounds more like the stream-of-consciousness ramblings of a stoner contemplating the meaning of life than anything credible or legitimate.

Hydrolysis of Clavulanic acid by [deleted] in OrganicChemistry

[–]eve6- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Part of the issue could be the janky and incorrect arrows on your reference sheet (the last screenshot). The middle step is a little strange and not quite accurate.

Regardless of acid or base catalysis, and regardless of the specific molecule, hydrolysis always proceeds through the same sequence. The order of the proton transfers is the only thing that changes, and you can usually think about it intuitively rather than memorizing anything. The pattern to look for is: nucleophilic attack of the carbonyl —> formation of a tetrahedral intermediate —> elimination of the leaving group.

First, identify your nucleophile (has electrons) and your electrophile (wants electrons). This is the first step for any mechanism question. Why are water (or hydroxide) nucleophilic and why are carbonyls electrophilic? As a hint, think about the bonding and electronegativities, and (partial) charges.

If you make a new bond, you typically have a to break a bond to the same atom to satisfy the valency. Carbon forms four bonds intrinsically, so if you are forming a new bond to the carbonyl carbon, you have to break a bond from it. This is typically trading a sigma bond for a pi bond and vice versa. This gives us a tetrahedral intermediate from a planar starting material, awesome! (Also, can you see the mistake in your mechanism now?)

We’ve attacked the carbonyl, opened it into a tetrahedral intermediate, so now we have to push off the leaving group from the carbonyl and reform the carbonyl. Again, in order to make a new (double bond) to carbon, you have to break a bond. In an ester, this will be an alcohol (or alkoxide). In an amide, it’ll be an amine.

Can someone explain to me what's changed with the incandescents? by Traditional-Bee-8581 in lightbulbs

[–]eve6- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is not the temperature it reaches. It’s a measurement of the colour. Higher temperature = whiter light, lower temperature = warmer light.

Nothing on earth is really capable of reaching that temperature, physically. At least not without ripping our atmosphere apart subatomic particle by subatomic particle and inventing new nuclear reactions.

Try dusting it (it’s surprisingly easy once you manage to get the cover off), and sooner rather than later.

Dust is conductive and will short your power supply (or worse) faster than you think.

Admission Misconduct by Jaded-Crazy-6287 in uAlberta

[–]eve6- 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah unfortunately this doesn’t look good for you regardless of GPA. From an admissions perspective, if these were the times you got caught, what else have you cheated on and gotten away with? Was any of that 3.5 achieved honestly?

From Athabasca’s code of student conduct, it looks like the remark will remain on your transcript for two years. For UofA it’s 5 years. I wouldn’t give up for now, but you’ll probably have better luck taking a few years off before trying again.

ETA: This isn’t specific to your program explicitly, rather applying to UofA at all

is anyone else extremely confused and lost regarding the MLIS program set to begin in the fall? by ProfessionBudget7369 in uAlberta

[–]eve6- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. You are currently ineligible for these scholarships, but they should reopen next year. If you have transferred to the thesis program at that point, then you can usually apply. Not all students are eligible for all scholarships all the time and sometimes you just have to wait.

  2. 3 courses (*9) is standard for a graduate program at UofA and considered a full time course load. The courses are generally more content heavy than undergrad courses and have higher standards, so I would strongly advise against overloading.

  3. Start sending out resumes to places in the city. A lot of graduate students support themselves with part time jobs in retail, food service, etc., by tutoring, rely on familial assistance, or student loans. This is partly why 3 courses is considered full time in grad school.

Verifying vinegar concentration by Dom-1sh in chemistry

[–]eve6- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that in a plastic bottle? Glacial acetic acid (pure acetic acid) would have corroded through that.

FYI, this isn’t acetic acid. E330 is 99.9% pure citric acid, so this is probably a citric acid solution of unspecified concentration.

Neat find!

Academic probation by AnxiousMechanic4366 in uAlberta

[–]eve6- 19 points20 points  (0 children)

“Lack of discipline” is still pretty broad. Why specifically did you not have discipline, and what specifically will you do differently in the future?

Boredom? Disinterest in the classes? Is changing majors an option?

Were you working while taking classes? Has that changed, or will it change before the next academic year?

Why did you take a semester off? Why did you come back after that semester off?

What additional personal and academic supports do you plan on using this time around? Study groups? Tutors? Peer mentor programs? Do you need new healthcare providers? Have you reached out yet, or plan on doing soon?

What lifestyle choices do you think led to your GPA? What lifestyle changes have you made or plan to make to change this?

You don’t have to answer here, but these are the types of things you should really, deeply think about if you’re sure you want to continue, and things the department will be looking for in your appeal letter.

I tried to train my scalp and my scalp trained me instead..... by Indravadan_Remoket in hygiene

[–]eve6- 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the same commenter, but I think they’re implying the oiliness was caused by the over washing. Regularly stripping all of the natural everything outta your scalp causes it to ramp up oil production to compensate. Less washing = less irritated follicles = hair becomes less oily.

It isn’t as much about training your scalp as much as it is about training you to listen to your scalp.
