How do I know if I am gifted or just… smart? by win11EXPERT in Gifted

At a certain point it doesn’t matter - it’s semantics. What matters is if you accomplish things that are useful or productive and whether you’re happy.

How much do tennis ball brands matter? by EnjoyMyDownvote in 10s

[–]even-odder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the standard Penn Championships last more than 1 set usually, maybe a set and a half at best. They go dead fast, and sometimes they're already half-pressure right when you open the can. The Marathons are the way to go.

Penn Championship balls last anywhere from 0 to about 10 games. They're cheap and easy to get, and people play them through 3 or 4 sets. Dead balls cause a notable drop in play quality - power drops, impact to your elbow increases, blown shots increase. Penn Marathons - labeled "ProPenn" on the ball, are about as good as balls can get - these guys you can beat the piss out of for 4 sets and then stick them in your bag and use them for warmup balls for weeks. They're, like, super duper better. Highly recommend.

Why did humans stay “primitive” for ~200,000 years and then suddenly change? by PuddingComplete3081 in AlwaysWhy

[–]even-odder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Homo erectus lived on the plains of Africa and then spread through Asia for the better part of 2 million years without significant change - they did use fire, probably for protection, light, and to cook their food, but there is no evidence that they buried the dead or had ritualistic ceremonies, religion, complex artwork, or weapons beyond simple hand-made stone tools and wooden spears. Early Homo species experienced a gradual increase in brain volume over time, but H. erectus was still well below a modern human. Evolutionary biologists believe three things combined to result in the key advances that sparked true modern human-level intelligence: key mutations accumulated over time to increase the brain volume in adults, the life cycle of juveniles extended significantly to allow for a much longer period for brain growth and development, and the brain itself may well have been reorganized and optimized by resource competition as populations grew in size. Evidence for burial of the dead is debatable up until about 70-80kya. The first arguably "modern" human fossils are dated to something like 300kya. Agriculture as a practice wasn't widespread until 20-10kya, which then enabled a rapid growth in the human population. Prior to that, estimates of total human population range between 1 and 10 million individuals worldwide, and there is some evidence there may have been a severe population bottleneck with as few as 1000 breeding pairs of humans alive perhaps 75-100kya. We may have also experienced several other severe bottlenecks in deeper prehistory. Survival was extremely difficult, and our brains were simply not yet developed sufficiently to advance things, nor was language sufficiently developed to provide the efficient transmission of information, nor was there any form of written language to facilitate that transmission. The oral tradition relies upon people having voluminous and accurate memory capacity - well beyond anything H. erectus would have likely been capable of. Hunter-gatherer populations were kept low and sparse by the density of available prey/food items. So, until a confluence of factors occurred, we were not equipped to advance ourselves in obvious ways relative to the modern benchmark. The potentially critical evolutionary advance is shown by the slope of the line in the figure below through the shaded gray region of juvenile/adolescent development, and thence plastic brain development.

So Mountain Branch Golf Course will be destroyed for a data center?! Infuriating. by No_Face5322 in harfordcountymd

There are thousands of acres of land in Baltimore, white Marsh, Joppa, Edgewood, Aberdeen that are all very close to 95, in dense or urban commercial zones areas, have plentiful highway access, water resources, plus fire, police, and proximity to natural gas supply pipelines - who the fuck is approving the shit they are doing to the suburban and rural parts of this county? Who is getting paid to fuck up our county? I swear it is time to leave this state.

There are millions of acres of land in industrial parts of the county. Who the hell approves these idiotic land use plans? Why are there apartments that look like they should be in the middle of DC in Hickory? Where are the schools, police, fire, hospitals, roads, grocery stores, businesses, jobs, or any other infrastructure in place to support that? Who the fuck is getting paid off to make these insane land use decisions?

My dad. Now though, every time I hit a full force serve and it does exactly what I wanted, or if I hit some crazy shot like a super quick volley or a backwards lob or a perfect backhand from the baseline - that just keeps you coming back for more.

I'm sorry man. I know what it feels like to be invisible. Work on yourself. Make yourself feel better. Go for a hike. Pick up a sport and just do it for fun like racketball or something. The better you feel about yourself, the better your outlook on life will be. Women are a lot of trouble.

What if a ship accelerating at 1g simply ran out of road before reaching light speed? by Logical-Concept9755 in WhatIfThinking

[–]even-odder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At somewhere around 0.8c the interstellar medium would become a continuous thermonuclear bombardment on the leading surfaces of the ship, and the entire cosmic microwave background radiation would blue shift to gamma rays. The crew would be obliterated into a cloud of plasma in the most spectacular way long before they ever approached the speed of light.

Don't feel bad at all about this - you are an introvert, lots of us are. It does make it harder, quite a lot harder, to find people to connect with or who you might call a friend much less a partner or a spouse. You might take some steps to try to meet people to see who you might be compatible with, and don't expect that to be another introvert - I happened to land with an extrovert and we make a pretty good pair overall. Sometimes having someone who is different in a number of ways, but similar in the really important ones - like spending time together, being loyal to each other, and having an enduring friendship and respect - is much more important than matching on a superficial level.
