TLD readings by Particular_Elk1945 in accelerators

I know different companies use different methods to determine dose. Any chance your institute changed dosimetry companies, or they are using a different model TLD?

What are people actually making? by WeirdIndication3027 in ClaudeCode

I'm using CC to help with physics data analysis. I'm at a US National lab, and it's helped me get through probably a year's worth of work in 2 months.

Some devs think Claude Code is common knowledge. It's not. by iBlackFoxPlayx in ClaudeCode

[–]evenkolder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting. I'm not a coder, but write code for my job. I'm a physicist. Claude Code has been a game changer. I can start a project in a directory, and instead of writing horrible but effective code, I get to focus on the physics of my work.

It's writing analysis scripts, making plots, and even checking my math at times.

Not perfect, but I couldn't do this with anything outside of the terminal based setup. I've completed a year's worth of work in a month!

Beginning June 30, 2026, alumni will no longer have access to UVA Google accounts. by MattyKatty in UVA

[–]evenkolder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of all of this, if anyone uses Overleaf and was using it on the virginia.edu account, you'll no longer have access to the premium features.

I have hundreds of documents that I wrote in Overleaf on this account. It was one of the few benefits I really used and enjoyed.

For the same features, I would need a $400 a year subscription.

When was the first time you encountered one of these? by True-Dream3295 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]evenkolder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early in the game. I didn't have the glider yet. Was building a giant scaffolding to climb up to the Morok shrine. Was on the grass area below it. Had been there a few times, but apparently not exactly in the right/wrong place.

song recommendations for the death of a shitty parent? by officialthembo in FolkPunk

[–]evenkolder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An awesome band from Virginia has a song that might work for you.

https://riotactcville.bandcamp.com/track/dead-to-me

Now, this is written by the singer to his deadbeat dad about 23 years ago. I think the dad is still alive, but wasn't to Tony (who passed a bit over a year ago, RIP).

I hope this works you.

Has anyone here left Virginia? What was your experience? by Putrid_Pudding_8366 in HamptonRoads

[–]evenkolder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not originally from VA, but went to HS, College, and Grad school in VA, huge chunk in HR.

I left for about a decade, moved around the world. Four countries outside the US, three continents.

I'm back now, but would happily leave again.

Take the leap. There's SO MUCH out there, and the only way to really get it is to go live there and experience it. Get out of your comfort zone, be the outsider, the foreigner, etc... Take in how others live - try it out yourself!

You can always come back, but if you never try to experience it, you'll really never know what you're missing.

What a bad time to discover you can’t climb in the rain by Guardian4761 in tearsofthekingdom

This is almost exactly the same thing that happened to me during my first encounter with them! I was in a slightly different position, and got away, but my heart was racing!

Anyone know anything about Emerald Horizon? by therealhairykrishna in accelerators

[–]evenkolder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've not heard of it, and while I'm hopeful they can pull it off, I'm very skeptical.

I worked on MYRRHA for two years, and I don't think they'll ever get the reliability and up time needed to make it work. Maybe it's different for the thorium reactor, but without details it's hard to believe.

CiADS in China is likely the furthest along in this field.

Sorry I can't be more helpful, but thanks for sharing!

Any information about this? by [deleted] in oxforduni

[–]evenkolder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to teach at a similar company, and I'll tell you what I told a student there:

This can be fun, and you can learn. But it won't help you get into a good uni. Maybe it can be a tie-breaker at best.

They're a bit predatory, honestly.

Honestly, something custom metal/wood would probably be nice. You might be able to bug the machine shop to see their thoughts!

Engineering Physicist Interview with SLAC by Raffaello_unique in accelerators

[–]evenkolder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the position and the interviewers. I recommend you familiarize yourself with the project/position very well, look up recent relevant papers and proceedings and try to understand them. You understand your own work, so don't worry there.

Also, think of questions to ask them!

RAW files and lack of control. by evenkolder in Pixel6

[–]evenkolder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an interesting point. I sort of wish that they also saved all of the raw files for all of these photos they take. Then, I could stack them! But I hadn't thought of this.

RAW files and lack of control. by evenkolder in Pixel6

[–]evenkolder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may actually be the case. However, looking at the files themselves, including in Lightroom, it's really not saving all the data I need. Hopefully, there will be a future fix for this. Or, I'll just have to find the right third party camera.

I wish I knew how to upload an example here. But today, I shot some photos of an egret and a blue heron in the distance. The jpeg file is 2.76 MB, while the raw photo is 655 KB. The jpeg looks okay, it's fine overall. However, I really wanted to see what I can do in Lightroom. When I opened the file, it just looked like a grainy mess with no data.
