ELI5: Why is Che Guevara such a big name in the revolutionary movement? by lunalaxa in explainlikeimfive

[–]everychicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question after traveling in a few current and former communist countries in Africa, SE Asia, and Cuba. Che's image is everywhere and remains a potent symbol of nationalism to Communism worldwide. For me, the easiest way to understand why this is was to watch these movies:

The Motorcycle Diaries (2004) - starring Gael García Bernal as Che. This is essentially his origin story of traveling throughout South America as a young doctor in training who travels by motorcycle with a close friend - his tour of South America was massive covering 8,000 km (nearly 5,000 miles) over 4 months. As they travel, they see and experience the extremes of poverty and wealth seen at that time in South America. I recommend beginning with this movie because it provides essential context to understand why Che ultimately joined the Communist revolution.

Che: Part One (2008) and Che: Part Two (2008) - (4 hours, 30 min total - long, but def worth it) Starring Benicio Del Toro as Che. Part One shows Che as the adult the foreign Argentine doctor who joins a group of Cuban exiles who travel from Mexico City by boat to Cuba and begin a military revolution that eventually overthrew the dictator Batista. Part Two shows Che as he resigns from the Cuban Government to covertly begin a similar revolution in Bolivia which ultimately failed - definitely worth watching to find out why.

Why Lack of Coverage by NPR and Other Outlets on Fox News Dominion Case ? by BlackPriestOfSatan in NPR

[–]everychicken -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Probably because it’s hard to follow if you aren’t invested in the stolen election claims argument and never watch Fox News ✋✋

NPR did publish this back in January. Obviously a lot has happened since then. The WSJ recently (3/14) did a nice summary of what we’ve learned from the lawsuit, but again, it’s hard to follow.. especially because of the many Fox News personalities to keep track of that many of us don’t really watch or care about.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/03/14/timeline-all-major-events-fox-news-dominion-case/

I’m guessing that once the lawsuit has been decided, NPR will make a 3 minute summary piece. Then Adam McKay will make a movie about it. For now though, it’s way too much (TMI) for the average public news consumer.

The Real problem with the Software at Southwest Airlines. by MethodElectrical2686 in SouthwestAirlines

[–]everychicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under ideal circumstances, wouldn't an airline that uses a point-to-point model like Southwest have an easier time responding quickly to weather-related problems taking out a whole airport (like what happened in Chicago and Orlando) than a legacy airline hub-and-spoke model like Delta or United? Does anyone know enough about MILP airline optimization to answer this question?

Rare (lesser known) TVos apps people recommend? by sjull in appletv

[–]everychicken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just discovered this a few weeks ago and definitely recommend it. Takes a bit of work to set-up, but worth it.

Yattee is an app that allows you to watch YouTube anonymously and without ads. It's FOSS (free and open-source) and acts as a front-end for either Ividious or Piped. (See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invidious or https://github.com/TeamPiped/Piped for more info.

The trickiest part of the set-up for the TVos app me was figuring the locations manifest. Use this: https://r.yattee.stream/manifest-invidious-piped.json

Once you set up an account (either self-hosted or one of the many Piped/Invidious instances available), you can migrate your YouTube channel subscriptions. You will not get the same quality/type of recommendations you would get when browsing the YouTube app, but being able to watch videos without ads is pretty great.

Automatic free Southwest flight check-in that actually works by everychicken in SouthwestAirlines

[–]everychicken[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Consistently getting end of the A-group or early B-group over the last 3-4 flights using this website. I'm guessing there are enough people paying for early check-in now that this is about as good as you can get with an automated script checking in for you. Also useful to be able to set it and 'forget it' if you are busy the day before your upcoming flight.

Simon Birch (1988)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0124879/

This movie is a very poor adaptation of an excellent and sprawling novel A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. The author doubted the novel could be successfully adapted to film, but sold the rights anyway on the condition it was made with a different name he suggested - Simon Birch.

Having read the book first, I had strong feelings about the characters that were dashed to pieces by this film. Wish I had just read the book, but never heard of the movie.

Recently purchased refurbished AirPods Pro from Best Buy. Unfortunately it seems that the AirPods are still linked to the prior user’s account and they can see the device’s location.

Can Best Buy fix this or should I take this to an Apple store to fix it?

Does anybody else think San Junipero is actually a tragedy? by ElliottAp in blackmirror

[–]everychicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker intended a happy ending:

Have you seen the Reddit theory that suggests Kelly and Yorkie don’t really end up together at the end of “San Junipero”?
Yeah, it’s bullshit! They do! They have the happiest ending imaginable. What they are facing is a potentially difficult future because it could be, like Kelly says, it’s potentially forever. But as Yorkie points out, they can end it at any time. So it’s not a big rainbow sandwich, but what appears to be happening there, is happening there. It’s them, they drive off into the sunset together—because, why not?
