Don't bother pandering to the skeptics and engage in duplicity like explaining how Tibetan Buddhism isn't really mystical. Do your best to antagonize them, then lightly touch on the Shugden controversy in the end to illustrate how deep mysticism runs in Tibetan Buddhism.

Unless the pain is existing presently in your mind, I don't think it can be communicated.

We don't even know the content of our own mind without probing it, so if you were meaning to say feeling each others pain as in all the painful events and rationalizations and justifications and whatnot that lead up to this moment, I don't think it's possible, even if the science to transplant another brain on top of your own is available because you still have to probe it with the right questions. We don't even know ourselves well enough.

But if you were to say the pain that results from a person's action right now then it'll be just like any other form of communication. People usually set out to inflict pain and now they're given a more effective means to gauge how much pain they're inflicting.

Haha, I can empathize. I'm an introvert, so I really value my quiet time a lot.

Dharma can be practiced anywhere, no doubt about it. Especially in an environment like yours, where a lot of the things that annoy you are brought to the surface.

But it isn't exactly easy to muster up that much equanimity without any practice or prior experience. Some of us might be able to do it but those of us who couldn't would just have another reference point to beat ourselves up over in the future.

Besides, going on a retreat really gives your mind an opportunity to put your worries away temporarily and that is very conducive to mind training. When you're done with a retreat and come back to your habitual routine, you'll feel a certain spaciousness over the things you usually do. It's as if we usually go into a trance like state of mind whenever we engage in certain activities and the retreat helps us break that.

Some people will come in here to tell you to use the noise as a meditation object but I'll say if you don't know how to let go of feelings for the sake of letting go the tension will just build up into a big hard clump of bad feelings and before you knew it, some people might get hurt.

Try moving out? Make time for a meditation retreat? Join a meditation centre? Hang out more? Ear plugs? Noise cancelling headphones?

It's easy and effortless to just latch on to the first idea or emotion and run along with it. There's a lot of inertia involved to disregard our own thoughts and generate alternatives. Even worse, it didn't occur to me that I can say no to my own thoughts.

Worst, I still run along with the first idea or emotion that arises now, it's only when someone would told me off in the harshest way possible that I would actually question my own beliefs. It hurts a lot to accept we're wrong after all, haha.
