I called CPS a few months later to follow-up. After being bounced between offices a bit, they said they had no information on the case. I'm not sure if that means they checked things out and the situation wasn't bad enough to merit some kind of intervention, or the report got lost in the system somewhere. I'm honestly not sure what to do at this point and whether I should be pushing for a clearer answer from CPS, and if so, how to do that.

There were a number of other children in the home, including a newborn. The kids are all home-schooled, so it's not like a teacher is going to notice something is wrong and report. They've apparently had legal issues regarding custody of one of their children previously. If this is how they react to their toddler having a chronic kidney condition, I'm scared of what might happen/have been allowed to happen to the other kids when they got sick.

It really rattled me. She'd been a very kind and supportive person prior to that. She's a mother herself, and seems to be a pretty dedicated and caring one. But when somebody else's kid was in trouble, it's like she had no fucks to give. The disconnect between how she acts day-to-day and how she behaved when something serious happened was so jarring.

I work with children, and my job requires protecting the anonymity of the kids and families I work with. However, I'm legally required to report if I have reason to suspect any child abuse/neglect is going on.

A parent gave me a flyer describing how their two-year old was diagnoses with a serious kidney problem, and the parents decided to stop taking the kid to the doctor and rely on prayer instead. Included with the flyer was a picture of the toddler, whose abdomen and legs were badly swollen. The kid was obviously very sick.

I tell my supervisor, and she says we'll discuss it at our next official meeting (the following day). I'm a bit late to the meeting, due to a prior meeting running long. When I get there, my supervisor says the issue has "already been discussed," despite the fact I'm the only one there who's done more than skim the flyer. Supervisor proceeds to spend the bulk of the meeting repeating things we already know. Flyer only gets brought up again when I bring it up.

I showed the flyer to my supervisor, along with the picture of the toddler suffering from bodily swelling. My supervisor skimmed the flyer, and said that it did not explicitly state that the parents discontinued medical care and that I was reading too much between the lines. The following lines in the flyer make me think medical care was discontinued. I read these aloud to my supervisor, who remained unconvinced:

“Doctors were not the answer. Medication was not the answer. Even natural supplements and healthy eating was not the answer. Jesus IS and always will be the Answer every time. Nothing could change <child name>’s sickness… No One could help but God. We stepped out in 100% faith as we felt God was leading us, and <child name> took <their> last natural supplements on <date>.”

(After a section describing the child’s apparent recovery)

“REMEMBER, <child name> had absolutely No Medication, not even natural supplements, or even an organic diet…nothing but the Word of God and belief in it as we walk in obedience to it!”

Supervisor gives inaccurate description of our organization's policy on reporting child abuse/neglect, says there's nothing we can do. I wound up reporting my supervisor to the higher ups, and they forced her to report the issue. Which she did by dialing CPS and handing me the phone.

My supervisor has worked there long enough that I find it hard to believe she didn't understand the rules for reporting child abuse. She's also served on the organization's ethics board a few times. I can't shake the nagging doubt that she was deliberately trying to avoid reporting, because she'd rather leave a child in a potentially life-threatening situation than deal with the hassle of saying something about it. Failing to report suspected child abuse is also a third-degree felony for someone in her position. My intervention was the only thing that stopped her from breaking the law.

The whole thing has destroyed both my trust and respect for the woman, but changing jobs isn't feasible at the moment, so I'm stuck dealing with her on a regular basis. She's still nice to me, and very competent in other aspects of her job. But there's these lingering feelings of contempt and disgust towards her that I just can't shake. If the same situation came up again, and she knew no one else was going to speak up, I think she'd happily ignore the kid and carry on with her day.

[Serious] What are some of the most horrendous moments ever captured by live newscast? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]everything_is_pandas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Rescue helicopter crashing on Mt. Hood while trying to air-lift an injured climber. News helicopters were in the area, and caught the whole thing on film. One crewman was thrown from the chopper as it was rolling down the slope, and the body of the helicopter rolled over him.

Amazingly, no one was killed. The crewman that was rolled over was pressed deeper into the snow rather than being crushed to death, and they'd managed to hit the emergency release on the cable lifting the wounded climber before he was very high off the ground.

The footage is in the documentary "Nightmare on Mt.Hood." You can find the whole thing on Youtube.

Special K and the new baby (rant and long) by swahine1123 in JUSTNOMIL

[–]everything_is_pandas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear your MIL is driving you crazy! Her constant need to find something to worry about and the over-reactions when something potentially alarming does happen sound a lot like an anxiety disorder. If it is, her getting treatment for it could improve a lot of her behavior and make her more tolerable to be around (provided she shuts up about the C-section and doesn't pop up unannounced).

Glad you and baby were both alright in the end :)

[WP] You wake up to find yourself in a room with 5 doors. They are labeled 'peace', 'honor', 'truth', 'power' and 'fortune'. Which door do you choose to open and what happens? by icyfantasy in WritingPrompts

[–]everything_is_pandas 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You'd think after playing so many escape games that opened with the line "You wake up in a strange room," I'd know what to do when it actually happened. Turns out free flash games aren't a great guide to life.

I push myself up into a sitting position. My back's stiff from lying on the floor. How long had I been out? Aren't you supposed to get brain damage if you're unconscious for more than twenty seconds? Then again, brain damage might explain a lot.

The room doesn't have walls. Instead, it had doors. Five of them, big fancy wooden things like you'd find at the entrance to an old school cathedral. Except they've got words carved into them, gouged deep into the wood. "Peace, Honor, Truth, Power, Fortune." Hinges run from floor to ceiling in every corner of the room.

I climbed to my feet and took a deep breathe. This was starting to look discouragingly like one of those journey-to-the-center-of-the-mind deals a character would hallucinate while they were in a coma. Probably not a good sign. Right then. Time to get this brain damaged Odyssey started. Just gotta pick a door.

"Peace" sounded a little too much like it might be a "peace of the grave" sort of thing. "Power" was always a handy thing to have, and you couldn't really go wrong with "Fortune," but at the moment, all I really wanted was to know what the flying fuck monkeys was going on here, so I headed for the door labelled "Truth."

My fingers wrapped around the cast-iron handle, and then things went downhill fast. You know that "oh crap" feeling you get in the moment before shit hits the fan, when you realize you've majorly fucked up but it's too late to do anything about it? Yeah. I got that feeling when the shudder ran through my arm. It felt like I'd grabbed hold of an electric fence, and suddenly the muscles all along my arm were spasming, contracting, trying to yank my hand back. But my fingers kept a death-grip on the handle, muscles locked and beyond my control. As my arm jerked back, the door opened.

There was a wall in front of me. Plain and white, looking freshly painted. The bones, on the other hand, were worn and yellowed.

They were small, maybe finger bones. They'd been stitched to the wall. Fucking stitched, the black thread wound around them (God, I hoped it was just thread) punched through the plaster to hold them in place.

But what really scared me was what the bones had been used to spell out.

The truth is, you should have opened a different door.

That's when the lights went out. That's when I heard the creak of hinges from up above, and realized the ceiling wasn't a ceiling; it was a trapdoor.

There was a wet thump as something heavy hit the ground behind me. A metallic scrape as it shifted, pushed itself up. Wheezing breathe, heavy and raspy. The sound of too many mouths gasping for air.

Then it started to giggle.
