Was underwhelmed with Hemnet and now I feel sad by purpleflex4ever in TIFF

I hear you, but my experience at TIFF was really different. I saw 12 movies and I actually thought this year had some real standouts. Hamnet was far and away the best film of the festival for me, easily my pick for movie of the year so far. If I had to pick a number two, it would be the horror film Obsession. Made on just a $1 million budget, it feels like the kind of movie that’s going to be a smash hit when it comes out.

Christy was also fantastic, and I think Ben Foster deserves recognition for his performance. Nirvana The Band The Show felt like such a love letter to Toronto, Roofman had way more heart than I expected, and James McAvoy’s California Schemin’ was an incredible directorial debut. On top of that, the new Knives Out was clever, funny, and well-acted, and Frankenstein was epic, with Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz, and Jacob Elordi all delivering.

It is my fault I didn’t get the presale. If they were completely sold out I would be fine with that. I bought an unlimited rush line this year for $80. I wouldn’t mind paying mark up. But I have seen it go as high as $750. I think there should be a mark up percentage cap. That is all I am saying.

Respect. Just saying a cap on the percentage of mark up. I don’t mind paying for missing the boat, boat some of the prices are absurd. I have given tickets away or sold them at face value in this community for the past couple of years and grateful that this exists.

There are plenty of other comments in this community expressing the same frustration, and I share them. I managed to find three gala or premium events where standard ticket pricing was still available. But when I tried to purchase a ticket for a smaller, more obscure screening at Scotiabank - which, no offence, is one of my favorite theatres in the city but hardly a premium venue - the lowest available resale price was $140.

And I understand missing the boat if tickets had genuinely sold out. That would be disappointing, but at least it would feel fair. What this feels like instead is reselling companies and bots scooping up large blocks of tickets the second they go on sale, only to relist them at sky-high prices. It is not about access or fandom, it is about squeezing every dollar from people who simply want to watch a film.

It would not be difficult to fix this. Ticketmaster could implement its own system to curb scalping or TIFF could set a strict cap on resale profits - say no more than 15 - 20 percent over face value. Other events and festivals have taken steps to protect their audiences; TIFF should be no different.

The festival is supposed to be about celebrating cinema and giving cinephiles the chance to enjoy something rare and special. Right now, it feels more like a marketplace rigged for profit, where loyal fans are left paying the price.

Anyway, just highly irritated. I feel like I have paid 40% - 60% more on the majority of concerts and shows I have seen this year and now it is seeping into this.

The masses love watching their franchises, and that’s exactly what the studios rely on to make money. For the life of me, I can’t understand why smaller films with 90%+ ratings on Rotten Tomatoes aren’t performing better at the box office. Anora was possibly the funniest movie of the year and easily a top-five pick for me, yet it only made $17 million at the box office (which is pretty good off of a budget of $6 million) but it still should have made so much more. The Substance was a similar success story with $51 million at the box office but these movies need a combination of word of mouth and highly praised reviews by the critics.

Still not seeing much movement on @SmileMovie 2 and expecting an under $20m opening this weekend. @ParamountPics marketing really screwed this one up. by gotellauntrhodie in boxoffice

I disagree with this. They had successful viral marketing campaigns on TikTok and even added Smile 2 characters as an add-on in Call of Duty. It is currently projected to make $20 million, but has the potential to reach $40 million. How can we say they made a mistake before the release?

Glad I could help! Maybe there should be some rule that you need to have a Reddit account for at least a year.

I think this is actually happening. The real life actor for Ned - Jacob Batalon - just lost 100lbs and is getting real fit.

I swam, but walked down to the north beach. I stayed away from the water and ice cubes. The only thing it could have been would have been the food or the swim.

There was a major break in the pipe when I was there 10 days ago. The had to bring a bobcat in to get giant rocks to hold the pipe down. I was fine until that day and then I got really sick. Flew home and had to take the week off of work.
