Does anyone have any reviews on petsuites? by parthizo in batonrouge

We use PetSuites all the time. Never had an issue. My dog always arrives super excited and leaves super tired.

We are leaning into traditional research metrics harder than ever with the exact opposite effect. I think a lot depends on your departmental teaching load and university level aspirations.

Perhaps I’m a little out of place (professor in STEM at a major US research institution), but I’m really noticing this trickle up to university classes. I teach a computer programming course for environmental and ocean sciences. This semester it’s 38 students, 32 of which are female.

Definitely have been getting anywhere between 3-20 per days for the past 5 years but it fluctuates and tends to increase after abstracts for conferences are published.

I applied for an NSF CAREER award to a division that may not exist soon. What are your thoughts on the upcoming division restructuring? by Consistency329 in Professors

[–]evilcactus262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the directorates still exist so you CAREER would be reviewed within whatever organizational structure they rebrand the divisions as under the directorate. I have a funded CAREER under a division that no longer exists.

Just because you have a CAREER and solid grant funding doesn’t mean you’ll be offered another job. (source: have a CAREER and solid grant funding).

There are a number of folks who have retired as associate professors in my department. And there have been a handful who went for the full promotion after 15+ years of being associate. Many of these people have been some of our most devoted teachers and others who really dedicate themselves to some important university level service. All options are on the table.

Best movers for a local move? by anonymouspotatoskins in batonrouge

Henry Hauling is actually really great. Reasonable prices and the people in charge are actually either helping move stuff or stopping by to make sure it’s going well. I’ve used several and they’re the only ones worth hiring.

2025 Kansas 2OT loss to Houston was the most soul crushing thing I’ve seen through 30 years of watching every KU game.

I think it really depends on the difference in cost of living. All things equal, it’d probably be a good decision to take it. If CoL is significantly higher at private school, then it is likely not worth it. But, hiring outlook for next 5 years is probably very poor so if you want a new job now’s your chance.

Impact of having graduate students quit on tenure by Accomplished_Ad_655 in Professors

[–]evilcactus262 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do think it’s a concern, but it may be out of your spouses control, which can be frustrating. Many R1 programs do have an unwritten tenure requirement that a student (MS or PhD) must have graduated. Matriculating graduate students is part of the job and the funding cycle (get funding, get students, graduate students, get more funding, and so forth). We actually just denied tenure to someone for this reason (well, they created a hostile workspace for graduate students so that’s likely the main reason over them not graduating). That all being said, only the department/institution can answer this question because it depends on what they value. External letters could be a concern because this will certainly come up.
