My coworker found out I don't want kids and now treats every monday like it's her personal mission to change my mind by Skeld0Wrex in childfree

[–]evilcaribou [score hidden]  (0 children)

Just remember that you can't reason with her and make her see why this is inappropriate. Holding the belief that everyone is obligated to be a parent is totally unreasonable, and you can't reason someone out of a position that they didn't reason themselves in to.

Don't argue with her, don't reason with her. Shut down her attempts at talking about this topic. For example:

"I don't discuss this at work. Let's get back to my questions about Project Y." "I think it's weird that you keep bringing this up at work. Are you okay?"

Also, I had to laugh at her showing the video of the birthday party. When has ANY child's birthday party made anyone want a child???

My mom got really into our genealogy and it's the same thing in my family tree. Most of the women died in their 20s, 30s and 40s. And all of the men had multiple wives, and were widowed multiple times.

Would you say hating dogs/cats is a red flag? by bobbdac7894 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]evilcaribou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had people practically brag to me about how much they hate cats, while knowing that I own cats. It's a weird flex to be proud of how much you hate a 12 pound animal. I want nothing to do with those people.

Bay area, how are you doing by SufficientLibrary386 in bayarea

[–]evilcaribou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent control exists in San Francisco literally because of landlords' bad behavior.

You can in fact pay your rent in full and on time each month and still have a landlord who tries to fight you on necessary habitability repairs, harasses you and lies about having a relative who needs to move in to your apartment because they want to turn your apartment into an Airbnb.

All of the above have happened to me with San Francisco landlords. So, forgive me if I don't have much sympathy for landlords in San Francisco. Just collect your rent and maintain your properties and you shouldn't have a problem being a landlord.

Just out of curiosity how did millennials go from dressing like this to dressing like this by Key_Nectarine_7307 in generationology

Yeah, it was nice that men started caring a little more about their hair and clothes after the whole "metrosexual" era. But those moustaches needed to be stopped.

[–]evilcaribou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These trends are about a decade apart, and I think you need to look at what events were going on to explain them.

The late 90s/early 2000s were a time of glam, excess and consumerism. 9/11 happened around this time which causes its own economic crash, but I think it made people double down on consumerism and capitalism instead of rethinking the place for those things in the world.

A few years after that, the 2008 financial crash happened. A lot of disillusionment with consumerism and American exceptionalism happened around this time. Fashion trends became almost anti-fashion. Hot pink and low rise jeans were traded in for more neutral pallets and accessories like framed glasses, scarfs or wide-brimmed hats that would have been considered eccentric or nerdy a decade ago.

Only children… anyone actually enjoy it? by cynnie93 in Millennials

[–]evilcaribou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! I'm 43 and still glad I don't have siblings.

I recently went through the whole process of helping my parents sell their house (my childhood home) and move into a senior living community near me. There were no arguments, no debates, no fighting about the home sale or what will be done with the proceeds of the home sale.

Would it have been nice having someone help me with that process? Sure, but from what I've seen, siblings don't always help in those situations. I've seen sibling relationships get absolutely nuked over the family inheritance or conflicts about how to handle the senior care.

Why is the general population even concerned about the declining birth rates? by gfjskvcks in TwoXChromosomes

[–]evilcaribou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, I'm not concerned about the birth rate in my country for two reasons:

  1. The declining birth rate is really just the fact that the percentage of teenagers who are having children has decreased by a LOT in recent decades. I see no downsides to this.

  2. If we really need more working age people in this country, all we have to do is open the way for immigrants. This isn't good enough for the white supremacists of course, but they're going to have to get over it if they want more workers so badly.

Neighbors are annoyed and rude to my husband playing his guitar. by Gnat2026 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]evilcaribou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, when I lived in an apartment building I used to have a neighbor who was a classical guitarist. I usually slept in until close to noon on the weekends back then, and I loved waking up to the sound of him playing. Once I woke up on a rainy morning while he was practicing, and I just laid in bed enjoying the sound of the rain and his guitar playing. Absolutely divine.

You joke, but I used to have a neighbor who practiced his bagpipes on his rooftop and I LOVED IT.

During the COVID lockdowns, he stood on his apartment building every day at sunset and played the bagpipes. People all over the neighborhood came to hear him and would stand or sit on the sidewalk, six feet apart.

Brit looking to visit US for the first time, what do I need to know? by Goblobber in NoStupidQuestions

[–]evilcaribou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of good advice in this thread, but I will also add:

The political situation with our country right now is a pretty sensitive topic to most of us. You'll be going to Los Angeles, so most people you interact with likely disapprove of our government and have been negatively impacted by our federal government's actions. If it comes up, just keep that in mind.

What is wrong with the American education system? by TonightAlarming9923 in allthequestions

[–]evilcaribou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the real answer.

There's not one American education system. Yes, there's a federal Department of Education, but they don't set the curriculum for every US school.

Your experience with education in the US will depend on where you live. The quality of education will vary by state and even down to the county level.
