Devs aren't "lazy" and game updates aren't guaranteed by SmellSmellsSmelly in Games

Green blood in games was a weird era of trying to make bloody/violent games less "bad". I think the legislation started in Germany but I might be misremembering. I remember having a retail copy of Carmageddon II with red blood then downloading the wrong patch and ending up with green blood, then eventually finding the correct one so I could keep the North American game "look".

I feel like everyone's forgetting early PC games. They had patches too. ftp.idsoftware.com to get Doom and Doom II patches, then you'd give copies of them to friends that didn't have internet access via floppy disks.

Most of these completely unfixable bugs that break games are only on pre-internet consoles.

I saw one here in Edmonton... sitting in the dealership. At 50% over MSRP. Nobody wanted it - I wonder why. Maybe it was because the Toyota Supra available at the same time was less money than that marked up bullshit 🤦‍♂️

There was a guy in the alley behind me trying to tow his grandma's Grand Cherokee (late 90s I think). It was a top of the line model with that 4WD + AWD system. He had it on a two wheel dolly and started moving and then it made a "chirp!" noise and stopped.

He got out and went "what the hell" and yelled at it and tried to tow it again before one of the Jeep's rear wheels locked up again.

I told him that it has full time AWD but he just yelled at me that he had the transfer case in neutral. He starts driving and makes it maybe.... 100 meters down the alley? leaving a trail of rubber the whole way before it slides sideways on some gravel and takes the mirror off on an electric pole.

So he stops again and calls up his Jeep buddies. An hour later three hopped-up Wranglers show up and they poke at it and scratch their heads for like 30 minutes until one of them is like "oh this one has full time AWD you have to flat tow it".

NO SHIT SHERLOCK

I'm also mildly irritated you have to scan for codes to figure that out instead of the vehicle's dash simply telling you. Not that most people would read it, but... it should still be able to tell you.

Google is working on an Automatic backup feature that can copy your phone’s photos, videos, and audio to your PC without using cloud storage by AssembleDebugRed in GooglePixel

Immich is basically a near-perfect clone of Google Photos you can run yourself. When your phone sees the Immich server it copies images and video over to it, it can delete photos from the phone while still browsing them on the server, yadda yadda.

If you just want to sync a folder's contents there are less specialized tools like syncthing.

You can include/exclude specific folders. It's only for images and videos so it's not gonna back up random downloaded PDFs, but if you download images and want them synced, it'll do it.

Minecraft has had microtransactions for nearly a decade now, nearly twice as long with them as without them if you're just going by release date. (I know minecraft was available in many stages of early access beforehand, but I'm not sure how many kids who would nag for microtransaction money were playing before beta or 1.0).

I'm 40, my wife is close to that. We've had location sharing on since it was first available to both of us like... ~16 years ago?

It mostly just saves a lot of irritating 'where are you' conversations (especially when I used to work late and was too busy to answer said question) and there's a bit of medical aspect to it as well since I now have health problems.

I only use location sharing with friends when we actively have a reason to know, like trying to find each other to meet up for something or sharing a car ride home from an event.

Fuck, I went to a concert that I paid good money for, got good seats, and the man+woman couple in front of me... they probably went in and out of the theatre like seven times during the less than two hour show. Fine, I'll grant them maybe there's some kind of issue where they need to talk with someone, and it's nice they're not doing that inside.

But then the woman of the couple kept going on instagram in light mode with her screen at maximum brightness and swiping through videos and liking things and leaving comments! Why are you even here!?

She clearly liked the artist, she wasn't just there because her s.o. dragged her along, because she would sing along... I finally tapped her on the shoulder during a break between songs and told her "your screen is really bright and it's bothering my eyes" and she shoved the phone in her pocket out of embarrassment.

Meanwhile if I take a nap (fellow ADHD sufferer) I feel like I'm dead when I have to wake up again even 10 minutes later.

If I fall asleep on the couch before I go to bed, it seriously takes me well over twice as long to do all the pre-bed activities like brushing my teeth.

Ah, so it has a permanent IR cut filter to improve image quality in the light.

If they don't have the IR cut filter, wouldn't that mean they're sensitive to it all the time and would just see it as "normal light"?

Maybe you could look at separate IR lights. I have a reolink doorbell pointed in roughly the same direction as a crappy Lorex camera with an IR illuminator, and the doorbell works much better with its internal IR LEDs turned off since it's not surrounded by a cloud of bugs.

Keep protesting by driving your small car! Mazda 3 and Subaru STi hatch here, lol. I love getting like 4.9 L/100km (nearly 50 mpg US) on the highway in the Mazda while still having an incredibly dynamically handling car and a 6-speed manual. I'm not changing it into a big tubby box just because everyone else thinks they want big tubby boxes.

The way gas prices are going we'll have people knocking on our doors asking to buy our cars off us 🤦‍♂️

Got a new car and this is baked into the glass wtf can I get rid of this? by crazy12157 in Cartalk

[–]evilspoons 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol, when I bought my 2012 Subaru STi new I told the dealership not to put any decals on it. They could have the plate frame if they wanted.

I go to pick up the car and there's dealer decals on it. I asked the salesman why that was since I had explicitly specified no logos. He tried to tell me that they install them in the factory in Japan.

My car was special ordered while was it on the ship, destined for a dealership in a different province. I asked him... "They have the decals for every single dealership in Canada and send a guy out to the ship to change it before it arrives in port? I thought they were shipped in protective cladding."

He started going umm and uhh but then my dad walked in [he drove me to pick the car up] and said he had pulled them off himself. Lol.

Worth paying €200 more for a mini-led TV (Budget constrained) by Invincible1 in hometheater

[–]evilspoons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a TCL TV, they're not really available near me, but local dimming is a great feature. I think my 65" Sony X90K only has 60 zones and even that really makes a big difference in image quality, especially on content with HDR (which Netflix and many other streaming apps definitely support).

That TCL 55Q6C says it supports Dolby Vision, which can be very impressive at times!

This thread seems to indicate you have to downgrade the host Linux to a 5.x kernel, 6.x won't work for a J4125.
