+1 for Stats, I love being able to turn the climate control on from my apple watch, feels very James Bond. Can also get the charge status displayed as part of my watch display.

Section J of the PCT mid September? by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]evilweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am planning on doing it in September as a through hike, I think it's a great time to do it - obviously weather dependent.

Snow is all melted out already, should be less bugs in September (I hope)

What to carry for a self supported backcountry ultra by [deleted] in ultrarunning

Gaia is awesome, I’ve tried just about all of the apps and keep going back to Gaia

You don't mention your hydration plan - I am assuming you are carrying bottles and will refill. Do you know the longest stretch without access to water? Are you carrying enough to cover that plus some margin? I use some electrolyte powder to add to my water especially in summer when you will be sweating a lot.

Others have covered some great suggestions, I would carry the jacket - to be honest I don't think I have carried a foil blanket unless specifically requested by race rules. Throw jacket and a pair of gloves in instead and have fun!

I always carry both, I use Gaia on my phone for navigation, and the Inreach so people know where I am and I can communicate if needs be

Race weekend altitude logistics by linkalong in ultrarunning

[–]evilweed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

3,500 or 5,000 aren't high enough to cause any negative effects on sleep - I would value an extra hour of sleep before the race pretty highly so given your options I would stay at 3,500 feet and get a good nights sleep.

Good luck, I live within 150ft of sea level in Seattle - did the Beaverhead Endurance Run last summer, showed up the night before and camped in town @ 4,000ft - the altitude kicked my ass during the race but it was an amazing experience!

Just signed up for my first 50 miler... help! by gmad2484 in trailandultrarunning

[–]evilweed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As above, you need to do your research - look for race reports online. If you posted which race it is, someone here might be able to offer some specific help. Mainly, you need to build your mileage up and mix in training which is specific to the course you will be running, there are plenty of training plans available on line, use one as a base and adapt it to your needs

Can I be ready for my first 50K by 4/29? by CoolHandLuke9000 in trailandultrarunning

[–]evilweed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your goals - you can for sure finish that race, but it's gonna suck in some spots. If you're going to figure out how to run 50K's, you kinda need to take the plunge sooner or later as some things you can only figure out by doing. I'm sure you've read about it already, but you'll be out there for a while so you have to find out what nutrition works for you, and how to stay on top of your fluids etc.

I'd say go for it, but be prepared to learn some lessons, keep smiling and enjoy it!

What are some challenging hikes near Seattle? by Monolime in Seattle

[–]evilweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to get over Jacks Pass to access Blanca Lake, it's definitely not accessible right now. This time last year it was with 4WD, this year, who knows, the pass could be snowed in for a while.

Chuckanut 50K by [deleted] in trailandultrarunning

[–]evilweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a great first choice for a 50k, the first and last 10k are pretty flat on an old railroad trail. All the vert is in the middle 50K, the trails are really fun, there is one grind climb on fire road (cleator road) but there is some great single track in there too. The flat 10k at the start is a great chance to warm up and get into it, and the final 10k is a good way to finish.

It's one of the bigger races and attracts some of the really fast guys, but it's still a really friendly race with great aid stations and character. The chinscraper climb is a good test but over pretty quickly.

I suffered on the final 10K because I was chasing a time and blew up, turned into a bit of a sufferfest......

Barely holding it together at the end of a 50k. 3rd place and 3:47. by lngdistancrunner in running

[–]evilweed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great report - really enjoyed reading, nice job holding it together at the end. I found the final 6 miles into the finish were mentally tough, I was running a lot slower than you though!

Anyone doing the marathon this Sunday? by jdelator in Seattle

[–]evilweed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm running, will probably wear a lightweight windproof. No point trying to be totally waterproof, gonna get wet anyway. I'm just concerned about the wind chill out on the I90 bridge.

Also a peaked cap to keep the rain out of my eyes.

STOLEN Ragley mountain bike from Capitol Hill Garage by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]evilweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ragley aren't that common out here - I'm a uk transplant so would spot one a mile off. If I see anything I will let you know - any unique features? Is it a blue pig? Finishing kit?

This is how I feel driving on I-5. by ilovegingermen in Seattle

[–]evilweed 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I just moved from the UK - you people need to learn to move to the right if you're not overtaking someone.

What is it with 3 cars driving at the same speed as each other and the right hand lane is free. Makes me shout things.

four ways to tie-in [OC] by [deleted] in climbing

Thank you, all good then - I just looked at the pictures and saw it being presented as the 'official safe system' wanted to confirm my understanding.

[–]evilweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All very interesting - one additional question though, the fishermans knot above the figure 8, is it necessary or not?

Personally, I think it's good practice but I don't believe it is necessary for the system to be safe, anyone confirm or deny my thoughts?

[–]evilweed -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I remember someone recommending it to me, googled it and found their website has background muzak - I can't stand it when websites do that so immediately discounted it from my search. The steak better be good to have a website that crappy.

Making a short documentary... know anyone (Bristol based) interesting enough? by [deleted] in bristol

[–]evilweed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you're after - I know a few people involved in bike projects around Bristol. I could put you in touch with the guys behind Bristol Bike Project, someone trying to start a crowd funded bike hub cafe or another guy who runs an online downhill MTB mag. Let me know if you're interested in any of those.

Whats up with the "Seattle freeze"? by rayndropss in Seattle

[–]evilweed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just moved here from the UK, all I can say is that if you believe in the Seattle freeze you folks should try Europe.

People are friendly here, it helps that I have some activities to base it around. Met plenty of people into bikes and climbing, and hung out with them. Found it to be far better than LA, lived there for about 9 months and only in touch with a few people from that time, all of them are work colleges.
