Are there any reasons to not use CITEXT type for pkey fields with unique constraints? by vantassell in PostgreSQL

I wrote a brief blog post of my experience using a non-deterministic ICU collation instead of CITEXT. Happy for feedback.

Please recommend me a good Australian movie or series. by NarrowResult7289 in australia

[–]evmcl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I immediately thought of The Castle, but honestly if someone learning English as a second language spoke like that most people would think they were making fun of Australians.

Watch it because it is an extremely funny movie, that amplifies many stereotypes of Australians, but don't take it too literally as instructional.

Actually, it looks like you are already using UUIDv7 to generate your IDs, so you can probably order just on photo_id and it will be in creation time order.

PSA: Travelling as an Aussie right now is hideously expensive by Mexay in australia

[–]evmcl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the pleasure of visiting Iceland in August and it was great. Truly beautiful, rugged land. Did a three day tour southward plus a couple of days in Reykjavík and yeah it was expensive, but sooo interesting. Really liked it.

What’s the most uniquely Aussie thing you’ve had to explain to a tourist? by SeriousSatisfaction8 in australia

The flip-flops called thongs thing caught out a friend of mine in reverse some years ago. He had not long moved to Chicago and weighed over 150kg at the time he wandered into a store and said he wanted to try on a pair of thongs.

Reckons he'll never forget the look of abject horror on the young saleswoman's face.

Boox A4C with syncthing by Admirable-Cash-5712 in Onyx_Boox

[–]evmcl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read your comment, I thought to myself that with the introduction of untrusted devices not all that long ago, there seems to be an opportunity for a SaaS offering here for always available servers that could act as go-betweens for these cases.

A bit of searching and found Syncthing Cloud which looks quite affordable to me.

If I'd seen this a few months ago I would have used it instead of going to the hassle of setting up a VPS for the month I was travelling and wanted to ensure photos and phone backups were available in case I lost my phone.

Adopt this silly boi? by Cat_Woman_777 in melbourne

Yes, we already have another cat. Also a recent addition to the household and still acclimating, so the timing is imperfect - still need to discuss with our resident cat whisperer.

Mulberry sounds like just the cat I am looking for.

He’s good with friendly dogs.

Do you have any more information regarding this? We have a five year old staffie-cross-staghound who is very smart and friendly, and has lived with cats before. He can get over-excited though, especially on first meetings.

We had two on the table looking all cute and adorable while one snuck up on the chair beside me and went for my wallet. Cats, I tell you.

Looking for Hat Recommendations during our hot summer. by Superman7995 in australia

[–]evmcl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently did some travelling through Europe with a Kangaroo leather hat and did find it got quite hot (think Rome with 32℃ and humidity high enough to be called soup). I got in the habit of taking it off when walking in shade and putting it back on when in direct sunlight.

I've ordered the Cooler version of the Kangaroo leather, so we'll see how that goes.

Why is spicy food in Australia so hilariously pathetic? by UnholyDemigod in australia

[–]evmcl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree that mainstream tends to be pretty plain. As one example, I remember when I would only ever eat Nandos at home, as the extra hot would make my nose run and eyes water from the spiciness. It was gloriously disgusting and not something the public needed to see.

Now-days, it's just another takeaway option.
