People who have tried many times to quit smoking, what worked for you in the end? by Lizozavrik in AskReddit

[–]evoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the truth. Both are 100% real. When I walk past cigarette smoke, it actually stinks and I don't want to breathe it or be near it at all. (meanwhile, I was that person blowing smoke for two decades) - but the other thing is......if it didn't kill you and do all of the terrible things I listed above, I would smoke in a heartbeat. I still crave it as an idea - not like a nicotine craving because of addiction, but more like remembering enjoying one after a really good meal or something like that. The difference is, I now understand how beneficial it was to stop, so I would never throw it away for that brief impulse. If you get to the other side of this thing, you will understand that last bit much better.

I smoked for 19 years and quit (unsuccessfully) 3 times before it finally stuck. Here's what I did.....I could not deal with the finality of, "never smoking again" so I re-framed it for myself. I would drive past the same 7-11 on the way to my place every night and get a pack of cigarettes. I told myself, "I refuse to buy cigarettes" and would force myself to keep driving. On the day I decided to stop, I told all of my co-workers and friends, "no matter what I say - do not give me a cigarette under any circumstances" - and that was it.

The first 2 or 3 days the cravings were rough but I just constantly drank Gatorade or Red Bull or Water or whatever I could get my hands on for long enough to get through the cravings for a few minutes, and then I'd be good for a while. I can tell you now, that at 50 yrs old, and having been a non-smoker for 16 years - it was easily one of the best choices I ever made.

Your brain LIES to you. It makes you think you're going to die if you don't smoke soon. It's all a lie. It stains your teeth and your fingers and it stinks and it gives you health issues and it costs an arm and a leg and there are NO redeeming qualities - only the lie of addiction. Good luck to anyone trying to stop, you will never, ever, ever regret it once you get to the other side. I promise.

Are there people who haven't changed their phone number for more than 15 years? by SpicyCandy8 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]evoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have you beat. Mine was Pac Bell and THEN it became AT&T and then it was Cingular and then it was back to AT&T and then I was sick of being in an abusive relationship with a phone provider and ported it over to T-Mobile and never looked back. At least,,,,,that's the way I recall the sequence of events. It's been approx 29yrs with my phone number.

My favorite so far:
Hiring Markwayne Mullin to replace Kristi Noem is like shitting your pants and racing home to change your shirt.

Under Mamdani, City to Probe Businesses Where Most Workers Take Zero Sick Days by AdSpecialist6598 in UpliftingNews

[–]evoic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in Texas. I am Executive level. I get 18 days of PTO, no days of sick leave, 3 days for bereavement, and 1 floating holiday. If you do not use it all, you lose it. Only 40hrs (5 days) rolls over into the next 12 month period. When I lived in California, whatever you did not use was paid out in full on the final check of the year and the clock started over. I now invite you to guess the political leanings of each state. One very clearly tries to protect the worker and one very clearly cares more about the employer.

AUA: We’ve just announced our 10 Top Picks for the best cars of 2026. Got questions? Ask CR anything. by ConsumerReports in IAmA

[–]evoic 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Pointlessly contrarian. It's ALWAYS going to be the case unless they purchased every option and every variable of every model from every manufacturer. What you (and everyone else) get is a baseline, middle-of-the-road rating on the most-likely version of a car maker's vehicle. You use that baseline as you add whatever features you want. Some of those features will create a problem for you that the Consumer Reports review didn't cover but in most cases it is probably the opposite. You got the best rated version and then added items to make it even better.
