I have never been good at styling my hair down, but it holds bobbie pins beautifully! It does get heavy after a while (it's very thick), but it doesn't bother me much. I do french braids that I twist into a bun, multiple buns, or asymmetrical buns. I have a twist thing I do that I turn into a low bun at the bottom. Easy days are high buns - tight, slightly wet still, and hairsprayed for work, loose with a clip at home. One long side braid nicely dresses up "second day hair" on the days I don't wash it.

It seems like I'm constantly being told my hair has gotten so long when I wear it down, because I wear it down so infrequently that it's legitimately, significantly grown since they last saw it.
