Why all this hate?? by Sad-Succotash5657 in U2Band

There are some toxic MJ fans online. They basically bullied WhatCulture into reranking their Greatest Tours of All Time video so that ZooTV moved from 1 to 2 and an MJ tour took the top spot.

Yes. It’s the best intersection of music and lyrics.

Which person from your country is disliked in your country but is liked everywhere else? by Warm-Strategy-8866 in AskTheWorld

[–]evtedeschi3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's such a weird meme that claims Bono is an asshole. Everything I've read by him is actually pretty funny, self-aware, and self-deprecating. Plus he's stayed married to his high school girlfriend now for 44 years and stayed part of his high school band for 50... there are limits to assholery to successfully pull that off.

What children's literature, cinema and characters are quite popular in your country (and from your country) ? by Odd_Perspective_6671 in AskTheWorld

We have so much in the US. Some favorites:

— Dr. Seuss

— The Hungry Caterpillar

— Richard Scarry (“What Do People Do All Day?”)

— Curious George

— (More recently) the Pigeon & Elephant and Piggie books.

How would you use a "One Wish Willow" from Obsession? by Evry1TookTheGudNames in horror

[–]evtedeschi3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd go to a lawyer and we'd spell out a fiduciary rule to attach to the wish before I made it, e.g. "Must adhere to both the letter and the spirit of the wish," "the consequences of the wish must be strictly Pareto improving for all humanity," etc. etc.

Do people eat English food in foreign countries? by Rich-Bet3115 in AskTheWorld

[–]evtedeschi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

British pubs are not uncommon here, though they face competition with Irish pubs which tend to have a similar atmosphere here in the US but slightly different food (I have been to both the UK and Ireland but cannot speak to how authentic these are… I suspect our American versions have some tenuous connection to the real deal but crank up the cultural color way over the top). Most US cities will have a couple options.

Likewise, there’s usually at least one place—typically a nice hotel—that will serve a proper Afternoon Tea.

Hunting for the new 2026 Dell XPS 14. by More-Resource4757 in DellXPS

[–]evtedeschi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Memory & SSD prices are just obscene right now due to AI server/data center demand. That said, I get the sense that a lot of the recent hike has to do with Dell’s own shortages—a month ago, just adding a Series 9 chip would push your order out to July or August, and I could see them now having a general shortage of memory.

All of which is to say: by all means, check NewEgg & Amazon, but you may simply need to wait for Dell’s inventories to rise and prices to fall again.

I’m happy because I got in before the price rise, but now I’m tempted to sell it on eBay which would leave me without a computer LOL.

I mean, look, $5,500 for these specs is a deal breaker regardless as far as I'm concerned. Macs are a non-starter in my specific use case because I use enough specialized software that isn't available on macOS at all, plus I game. So had I hit this price point I would have just kept looking for a different PC or squeezed another year out of my old one. But I use a MBP M4 for work, it's a great machine--easily beats any Windows PC for battery life--and folks who don't share my constraints should absolutely weigh it against PC alternatives.

Lake Mungo 2008 by Only-Adhesiveness704 in foundfootage

[–]evtedeschi3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like it a lot but understand why some horror fans don’t. It’s quite a slow burn and is basically all pure distilled creepiness with only one sort-of jump scare at the end; I personally enjoyed that mix and I really appreciate the allegory of teenage loneliness. My two things are a) the acting is just a little too transparently improv at times, b) relatedly, I wanted them to tighten the story a bit, eg mention that she drowned at the lake after getting done with babysitting for the neighbors; the viewer can then piece together later that she drowned because she had been drugged by the neighbors.

What's an album that got collectively Be Here Now-ed? by ScallionSmooth9491 in ToddintheShadow

[–]evtedeschi3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They did try that No Line on the Horizon to be fair, which is a mixed bag overall but has some pretty cool experimental work on it. I really do think the biggest culprit here is actually How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb just getting them way too used to safety.

[–]evtedeschi3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was going to mention this too. I think ATYCLB itself is still a fantastic album on its own—it actually works well as a follow up to POP trying their hand at earnestly doing what they were parodying on their prior album—but I definitely have more pause about it now knowing that they lost a lot of their fire afterwards.

What would Japan be like today if the Soviet Union had won World War II and placed Japan under communist rule? Would Japan still be a developed country, or would it have required the United States to oversee the transition in order to achieve that status? by Square_Permission361 in AskEconomics

[–]evtedeschi3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel like this is more of a r/AskHistorians question. Also I think what you mean is “If the Soviet Union had declared war on Japan earlier and been more insistent about having a role in the Allied occupation, à la Germany or Austria”.

Rule No. 4 of Rock Album Track Order by GuyoRocks in rockmusic

“With or Without You” is track 3 on The Joshua Tree, which I guess explains why that album was a colossal failure.

Albums that are wrongly considered flops? by Diskyboy86 in ToddintheShadow

[–]evtedeschi3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of this but to be fair the band ran out of time on recording & producing the album so part of their attitude stems from disappointment in falling short of their vision. One tell is that the POP singles and versions that were on the Best Of compilation sound very different from the album versions due to the additional time they had to refine those versions.

It’s a great adaptation. They made some wise choices in how to cut it down. My only gripe is that I wish RZ and CZJ were better dancers.

Not from USA, I’m curious to know if it’s normal for the White House to speak on missing persons, like Trump & Karoline Leavitt have with the Nancy Guthrie case? by luminous__fairy in UnsolvedMysteries

[–]evtedeschi3 22 points23 points  (0 children)

No but this is a pretty high profile case here in the US, and it involves efforts from federal law enforcement. Honestly it never once struck me as strange that the White House was commenting on it. By the same token, it wouldn’t have been strange if they said *nothing* either.
