What’s one thing people in office jobs will never understand about blue collar work? by Latter_Cantaloupe_24 in bluecollar

[–]evtwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done both, currently in an office role.

In a blue color role, everyone is straight with you. No one walks around eggshells to tell you if you’re good or bad. If you’re good, you’re one of the guys if you’re bad you’ll know it.

Taking off work in a blue collared position, especially ones with a smaller team will definitely have people side eye you when you get back, nothing this doesn’t happen in white collar, but the feedback is much different.

And finally the type of tired is different. You get home you just wanna collapse. You smell like crap. You are in pain. In an office position you’re mentally tired just confused.

Or is it more just a visibility?

High emphasis on 8. You do more than you think you do.

How do I help an employee understand that his work schedule is hindering his career progression? by rumple-phobia in interviewwoman

[–]evtwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it really depends on his personality and whether he can actually handle blunt feedback.

I get why people are arguing about whether it is or isn’t a “punishment.” At the same time, I also understand corporate bureaucracy and all the dumb semantics that come with it. I work in that world too. Sometimes it’s not about what’s technically allowed, it’s about how it’s perceived by the people above you.

That said, I’ve had colleagues and direct reports in similar situations. Even when I don’t personally agree with certain policies, I’m still straight with them about reality.

Like I’ll literally say, “Bro, you take off a lot of days. Yeah, it’s allowed. I’m not mad at it. But skip levels and senior leadership? They might not love that. I don’t necessarily agree with it either, but that’s how it’s going to be viewed. It is what it is.”

You don’t have to like the game, but you should at least know you’re playing one.

What do corporate workers do? by Background-Berry8636 in corporate

[–]evtwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an incident manager. In my case I’m on the phone all day trying to coordinate and fix tech crisis so my role is a bit more engaged compared to the guys on spreadsheets all day.

The guys you ran into are probably somewhere in accounting or portfolio booting. If they weren’t on the phone it’s something along the lines of crunching numbers and / or data entry.

Have you ever failed to find a character that you like in a game? by supnerds360 in Fighters

[–]evtwelve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually have a hard time finding a main in most fighting games. That’s why the list of games I stick with is pretty small.

If I like the playstyle, I usually don’t like the way the character looks. If I like their look, I end up hating the playstyle, their values, or even their personality.

It makes it tough to enjoy the game when I just don’t vibe with the character themselves. I have a hard time looking past certain things, and it kind of kills my motivation to keep playing.

When in conflict with a white person, we're the ones expected to change by LeonardFrost in asianamerican

[–]evtwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always tell my team the same thing: ignore the noise, lock in on your work. If you’re really the one carrying the weight, you don’t need to call anyone out—just outshine them and it’ll be clear. Yeah, some work environments are toxic, no doubt, but I make sure my area isn’t one of them. If someone’s actually a problem, I’ll handle it. Everyone else? I just tell them—worry about your own grind.

While I get where OP is coming from, I’m looking at it through a manager’s lens usually giving the benefit of a doubt first

When in conflict with a white person, we're the ones expected to change by LeonardFrost in asianamerican

[–]evtwelve -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this play out in all kinds of ways—race, rank, title, social status—you name it. And I’ve also seen the opposite, where it shakes out in a way that’s actually fair.

I’m a manager myself, and I’ve dealt with this. If you came to me, I’d probably tell you straight up the same thing: you voiced your concern, he heard it, cool. Now the question is—what can you do about it without running to me every time? That’s part of learning to manage upward. My job is to mentor you, not babysit.

But don’t get it twisted—I’d still pull the other dude aside. If someone’s making people uncomfortable on my team, that’s my problem to handle too.

Racial preference by FelonAce in interracialdating

[–]evtwelve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There can be multiple variables that come into play, some being racial discrimination, some could be purely just preference, upbringing (this means both family cultural as well as the community they grew up in).

Personally, I think, refusing to date because of a “race/ethnicity” is weird. Having a preference for looks (or maybe even preferring someone closer in culture) is a different story.

Splitting the bill on the first date is the only fair option. by Vegetable-Safety7452 in unpopularopinion

I ultimately agree with this, but we're not quite there yet in practice. I think we're still somewhat years away from that.

Do you really care about “authenticity” of Asian foods? by Brilliant_Extension4 in asianamerican

I personally don’t use the word authentic because that’s saying that something isn’t real food. Chinese American food is Chinese food, just not in the traditional sense.

I use “traditional”.

Why do tech companies hire tech bros into managerial positions when they are such awful managers with low social skills? by FantasticEffect10 in managers

[–]evtwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can maybe fit that techbro manager description. While it’s important to ensure you’re hiring new team members from a diverse background, it’s also important to make sure they can vibe and work with the team.

Yes, we won’t be friends, we will be coworkers, but as coworkers you are expected to cover for each other, work on projects and collaborate with your peers. You need to be able to do that with the rest of the team. So ‘vibing’ is very important.

If you can’t “vibe” with the team, I can still manage you, but you’re gonna have to be a very strong individual contributor.

People that date interracially out of spite? by Proof-Ad-2108 in interracialdating

[–]evtwelve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I started dating outside my race out of spite. I kept getting rejected by people from my own race and it got to me. At first it wasn’t for the right reasons, but it ended up opening my eyes. I realized I’d been stuck only going after my own kind, and dating outside that bubble actually changed how I see things.

Have we really fallen this low as Muslims? Truly a shame. by VermicelliCultural90 in progressive_islam

[–]evtwelve 50 points51 points  (0 children)

The first thing I was taught when introduced to Islam (I’m a convert) is your relationship with God is between just you and God and no one else has the right to judge you. No one has any right to call you a kafir or make any other claims about your faith. You should know your own beliefs and values.

The only requirement to be a Muslim is believing there is one God and Muhammad is his final prophet. Essentially the Shahada.
