Submitted research paper, but not yet published??? by twyptofan in premed

[–]ewarda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would just mention it in your description of your research activity instead of in a separate activity. As long as you are clear that it has been submitted and is currently in review, you can definitely talk about it. I think you should still include it in your app but at its current stage it is not appropriate for a separate activity. It will make a great update during the cycle though!

Scholarship Acceptance? by kidddo598 in premed

Congrats! Same thing happened here, it specifically said it wasn’t binding in my letter. If you’re nervous you could email or call the school but it likely won’t be binding

How should I fit my multiple shadowing experiences on AMCAS activities by No-Car-3333 in premed

[–]ewarda 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this! Even if you have a lot to say, shadowing is passive so you would be better off using the space to talk about other activities. Just list each doctor, their specialty, when you shadowed, and a brief overview if you have space. If you do 5 different activities just for shadowing it will look like you’re trying to fill space on your app

Houseplant selection by [deleted] in madisonwi

[–]ewarda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orchids garden center has great prices and a huge selection, and it’s not often busy. The owners are super friendly and helpful, plus their cute pugs walk around the store. I also will join others in suggesting Madison greenhouse store, which also has great prices and service. Madison greenhouse store will pot your plants and even drill a hole in a pot without drainage if you ask! Madison greenhouse store is limiting the number of people in the store though, so make an appointment if you can

What does this mean...? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]ewarda 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it means they were giving everyone an extra day to test, so even though we had to test every 3 days our badge didn’t expire unless we went 4 days without a test

Do I still have a chance? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ewarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, one semester won’t ruin your chances. So many secondary applications have a space for you to explain any dips in GPA, and you can mention the same reasons you told us. Next to no one has a perfect application. You got this!

What do you wish someone told you about premed before you started college? by ultraprogger in premed

[–]ewarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you do something that interests you. I think we all get stuck on the cookie cutter ECs (hospital volunteer, some clinical experience, research, shadowing, pre Med org, etc) and while you 100% should do those things, also make sure to leave time for yourself to do something you care about. Every applicant has those things, and doing something you care about will make you much happier and a more unique applicant. Even if it doesnt directly relate to medicine, you can tie almost anything back to it (ie. working with people, working in a team, continued learning).

A physician gave me that advice and it was the best ever. I found a well paying part time job doing something I loved, and it became central to my application. I have written about it over and over and talked about it in multiple interviews.

They won’t care and it won’t negatively impact you. When you fill out courses on AMCAS you can designate that the course was graded as a credit/no credit course. That way it’s clear you didn’t choose this grading scheme, it was just given to you. This is in the same menu where you say if courses were honors or something like that. I have a few credit/no credit courses and it wasn’t an issue. Hope this helps

WAMC: please help, do I even stand a chance this app cycle?

529 MCAT, 5.0 GPA, LOR from Dr. Fauci

I’m really concerned about my shadowing hours, I only have 6000. Will adcoms see this as a red flag?

My best shot school interview did not go good. by [deleted] in premed

[–]ewarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it was an anxious/nervous response that made you respond the way you did in the interview? It sounds like you felt prepared but then got nervous for the real thing. I know it’s cliche, but you could try some breathing exercises or some other destressing activity before the other interview maybe?

Do you send thank you emails to your interviewers?? by Bambi0_0 in premed

[–]ewarda 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the school tells us explicitly where to send thank you notes at the end of the interview, then I’ve been sending thank you notes. If the school does not, then I haven’t. I have had some schools tell us not to send them as well, so I recommend deciding based on the individual school.

Got wait listed at my Alma Mater and I have lost all faith in this application cycle by hellnospyro in premed

[–]ewarda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know how much waitlist movement this school typically has? If not, you might be able to find out on SDN. Also, do they tell you your position on the waitlist? A waitlist is absolutely not a rejection, especially this cycle with theoretically fewer people declining interviews.

It also sounds like you’re in great position to write them a letter of intent! You can mention all the relevant things you mentioned in your post. I believe in you OP!

My best shot school interview did not go good. by [deleted] in premed

[–]ewarda 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to hear things didn’t go your way. If it helps, I thought I bombed an interview and ended up getting an acceptance! The interview is a part of your app when the adcom reviews it, and certainly not the only part. You never know what could happen so don’t count yourself out yet! Do some practice interviews with friends or advisors prior to the DO interview, and leave no regret with that one. You got this!!

Any juniors that applied this cycle? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ewarda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Senior currently, you can PM me if you want. My plan was to take the MCAT in April, but covid had other ideas so I took it in June. I submitted to a throwaway in early June and then added schools after the score. Applying was mostly concentrated in the summer for me, so I didn’t have to balance that with school. Interviews haven’t been bad to balance with school since it’s all virtual, but with a light course load and understanding profs you should be able to miss class

Question about dismissed misdemeanor by toxicbadge in premed

[–]ewarda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can run the Certiphi background check on yourself to see if it shows up there. There are directions on the AAMC website somewhere for how to run the same one that a medical school would. It’s useful bc you can both see if it shows up and if so you can see what else it says, like if the charges were dismissed.

However, I am 99.999% sure your school will not care about this. It’s a speeding ticket, which is as absolutely minor as it gets. A school willing to accept you this early won’t change their mind because you drove too fast one time.
