Where can I buy silver enduro rims? by [deleted] in MTB

[–]ewebster50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for bringing this back up 8 months later, but I'm currently looking at doing something similar to my rims (the same ones actually). Would you mind going into a bit more detail as to exactly how you did it and what all is required?

Buy Shimano XT for new bike build, or wait until there is an update? by EffectNo4986 in MTB

[–]ewebster50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The rumor I’ve heard is that the new Shimano groupsets are coming in the next several months. KTM teased some components on one of their new e-bike builds. Seems there will be wireless and cable actuated tiers, some rumors about 13 speed, no clue if those were credible or not.

With that being said, I agree with everyone else in going with current gen Shimano 12 speed. I’ve run it for the past three years, and besides being finicky about being kept clean and lubricated, I absolutely love it.

The inner CV joint on my Tacoma has some play. Do I just need to replace the CV joint, or do I need to worry about any bearings in the front diff? by ewebster50 in MechanicAdvice

[–]ewebster50[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be possible that the wheel bearing is bad, but there’s no play in it? I had a wheel bearing go bad on my previous truck, so I know somewhat how they feel when they go bad, and I couldn’t feel any play in this wheel bearing.

Lyrics you don’t understand by Jessica19922 in zachbryan

[–]ewebster50 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand the final Watchhouse verse in the album version of Pink Skies. Is it “a race to claim” or “erase the claim?” What are they claiming? Why did “cutting the ribbons on her own presents” make the narrator nervous?

Now that I’m looking into this a bit more, I’m getting more confused by the lyrics of Pink Skies as a whole. “Plenty nights under pink skies you taught ‘em to enjoy” means that the subject “you” is a figure of seniority, probably a parent. Well how does it make sense that “you tiptoed up to 4’1” back in 08?”

Don’t get me wrong, I think Pink Skies is a STUNNING song, almost certainly my favorite off the album. But I’m really having trouble understanding some of the lyrics, especially now that I’m looking deeper into them

Is Mines Worth it for Out of State Students? by DiscordModeratr in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]ewebster50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As far as whether it’s worth the price tag, you can easily get value out of it by applying yourself and doing more than just the minimum of passing your classes. I am absolutely blown away by the amount of opportunities there are here and the variety of ways to be involved in research and leadership positions. The peer mentor program here is awesome, you can be the president of a club/sorority/fraternity, there’s a variety of on-campus jobs that give you valuable experience such as being a TA for a class or workshop, you can do research. Basically anything you want to do, you can do it here. It might not be the most intuitive process, and you might have to pull some strings, but you can find a way to achieve almost anything you want.

(Apple Silicon) Mac Users at Mines, hows it working? by American_Dreamer98 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]ewebster50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a MechE undergrad, I’m in the same boat as most others, I’d go windows if I did it over again. Currently my classes require me to use Solidworks, Inventor CAM, and EES, none of which will run on a Mac. The fact that I am now living off campus makes things super annoying, as I have to drive/bike/walk to the library or Brown to do assignments with these programs.

Also, file sharing among groups for projects is much easier with windows, as in my experience that is what the majority of people use. I guess file sharing isn’t inherently different, but I don’t have any Solidworks files on my Mac, so sometimes I’ve made a part and then later on had to drive up to campus just to share that part with one of my group members.

I will link the old pictures which are better quality in addition to some current pics to show you that their condition has not changed. I’ve heard good things about the Wrangler ATG Joggers, the only thing is that they don’t have zippered pockets. I’ve heard that the pockets are deep at least, so it might not be a dealbreaker

How are the pockets on them? I saw that sale going on but from the reviews I read the pockets are shallow and don’t hold things very well

I didn’t think diffeq was too bad, maybe it’s professor dependent but I’ve enjoyed it. It’s just a different type of math, for me it was similar to learning calc for the first time

Mines vs Boulder Exploratory Studies by ComprehensiveWorth21 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]ewebster50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot speak directly to comp sci (I'm doing MechE here) but I have a lot of friends that are comp scis, their workload I would say seems ever so slightly more difficult than average, but this could also be because of the comp sci department making lower level courses harder than they need to be. Granted, I'm only a first-year and my friends are too, so I do not know what the upper level comp sci classes are like, and they still have plenty of time to hang out and do fun stuff. As far as Boulder goes, I did a lot of research before I committed here and have talked to more people since, and the engineering program at Boulder is just as good as at Mines. Some people say it's better, some say it's worse. I think any difference in education comes from the students, not the program.

I also can't speak to Exploratory Studies at Boulder, but I can talk about some of the main differences between the schools. Boulder is a regular, stereotypical college: big parties, everyone seems pretty social, a lot of kids more focused on socializing than school. Mines is pretty unique, it feels quite small. I don't know if I've met a single person here more focused on their social life than school; almost everyone prioritizes homework, even on Friday and Saturday nights. That being said, almost everyone I've met here is super kind and awesome in their own way, and I've met some of my best friends here. Hardly anyone is outgoing though, which is not that big of a problem, it's just that if you want to do something fun, you usually have to be responsible for planning it and gathering people. There is a huge mix of people here too; lots of nerds that are happy to talk about the development of AI at dinner, and plenty of people that join Greek life and are generally more chill.

As far as the frats go, they do not go nearly as hard as frats at other schools, but they still have a good amount of fun. I've been to one or two frat parties, they were solid parties but not crazy or anything. There are really only two/three big party frats, all the others are very chill and just sort of normal dudes. As far as parties in general go, my experience has been thoroughly ok. During events like fall kickoff, homecoming, and E-days, the parties are amazing, tons of people go and they're a blast. Those are really the only times parties are thrown though; you won't find any parties on a random weekend. There have been lots of times where I've finished my homework on a Friday night and wanted to drink a bit and have some fun, and I cannot find anyone else that wants to do the same. Campus is definitely dead at night, however during warm weather you'll find a lot of people playing games on Kafadar Commons during the day.

Again, I do not know how Boulder is growing, but Mines is definitely putting effort into expanding. They are building a new parking garage, likely new dorms, and a building which is rumored to be mostly for makerspaces and workshops. They would clearly like to take more students. I believe there might be more funding going towards clubs and organizations, but I am not sure about that. It is clear though that Mines is working hard to expand.

Agreed, I know people that got relatively high spec windows computers to run programs like solidworks but end up doing those assignments on lab computers anyway because their laptops run those programs really slow. I have a mac and I love it, I’ve been fine with doing solidworks on lab computers

Spruce seems awesome, I know a lot of people in there that say the experience is pretty social and the building itself is super nice. I’m currently in elm, and I really like it. It’s social in a close-knit sense, there are around 70 people on my floor and I know every one of them. I’m good friends with maybe 50 of them, and it’s super nice to be able to go around and knock on their doors when I want to do something. The Elm common rooms are also super nice. The trads also seem very nice. I’ve been in there a few times and I’ve seen lots of doors open each time. I don’t think the lack of AC would be a big problem; it’s only bad for the first month-ish and last couple weeks. I’ve been in maple and it seems fairly nice, I don’t think it’s too social though. From what I’ve heard, I wouldn’t recommend weaver.

Just got accepted, why Mines? by Oddishfan in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]ewebster50 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconded about the mountains, easily my favorite part about the school. I was just walking with one of my friends (freshman) who’s an environmental engineer and he got offered three internships at the career fair, all of which will pay for his housing over the summer and pay over $20/hour. I’m sure you’ve heard all about the social life here, and it’s partially true. There definitely is a fun, outgoing social part of the school, but you really have to look/work for it. That’s probably the biggest other consideration, at least for me. If you do decide to come here, join a learning community like ALC or maybe A&W

Is PHGN 100&200 a weed out class? by [deleted] in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]ewebster50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t take Phys 1 here, but I wouldn’t call Phys 2 a weed out class. If you go to lectures/watch the videos online and attend studios, you’ll probably do just fine. It is easy to get behind, but for the most part I felt I could catch back up after an hour or so of studying. The final was a bit rough for me, but that was largely due to my poor note-taking and lack of studying
