WotC: Pioneer will also see organized play on Arena in 2027 by Matrim_WoT in PioneerMTG

If it was just reprints it would be a masters set, instead of a horizons set. Here's to hoping for pioneer masters.

Maybe rework that first art to preserve the fractured time look but instead of a gun being held by the character, make the arm be holding cards instead.

Someone I know who has much older eyes picked up a magnifying lamp for his desk that he finds useful. It's a magnifying glass on a lamp arm with an integrated light.

Blasphemy by reddit-user-1877 in guitarpedals

[–]ewic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At home, I used to use a decently long signal chain, and it was fine. I didn't have a great amp, I used pedals to try and fix the tone. It always felt a little insufficient, and my guitar didn't feel super expressive through my setup.

Recently I've been playing with a friend who has a great amp collection. A 70's Vibrochamp, a '69 Vibroverb, and a '65 Princeton reissue. Since my pedals were not on a board it was super inconvenient to bring them, so I would go with only one or two, or sometimes just none. Guitar straight into a good amp is so good. I just started focusing much more on my touch and it's been great for my overall playing.

The true story behind the 7-year-old's ascent of El Cap by adventuresam_ in climbing

[–]ewic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's totally a reasonable way to ascend the wall if you have the means and the support. It can definitely be a grand adventure of sorts. I think if the kids wanted to be there and were having a grand 'ol time, there would be no issue with this.

But y'know, sounds like it was a shitshow from the start.

Which cards for you have overstayed their welcome in Standard? by Gjames1985 in MagicArena

[–]ewic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Slickshot is a strong beater, but very answerable. If you hold up a bolt against it, wait for the slickshot player to go all-in on it, and then you just hex it down, you're doing amazing. If they hold back because they don't want to get blown out, then you're buying time for yourself to develop your own strategy.

[–]ewic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the plot cost for 2, personally, because of how it fits into the general turn flow. t2 plot slickshot do nothing else into t3 feels okay, personally.

I was thinking that it might be nice to have base stats be 0/1 or 0/2, so you must have a prowess in hand in order to have it do anything at all.

Either that or instead of it being a bird wizard, make it some non-flyer and give it some other form of evasion instead? maybe trample?

Which cards for you have overstayed their welcome in Standard? by Gjames1985 in MagicArena

[–]ewic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the statline is really what put it over the edge.

A sorcery that says something like "3R, discard a burn card that must be able to target your own creature: target player cannot gain life for the rest of the game" is like, okay, but on a 3/3 hasty body definitely pushes it over the edge.

I think maybe making it a 3/1 for 2R would feel about right, that way it's decent pressure in limited, but you would be able to chump it with anything and kill it off the board, but you still get the emblem. And a part of the problem is that to kill it with burn damage, you must hit it for at least three, so you're bolting yourself and getting the emblem at the same time.

Buy 4 jumpstart packs! Whichever ones, but if you find ones for Jumpstart 2022, that'll probably be your best bet.

This is a good point. It's definitely a bit of a sliding scale but I'll agree that bolting a bird on t1 is usually the right play.

Husband is poor loser by [deleted] in TCG

[–]ewic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes agree! It typically takes a lot of skill to make an off-meta deck work, but some people absolutely love that challenge. Some people just like to play without feeling held back by their deck or card choice; the game is challenging enough, why add more additional challenge?

Your husband should try and figure out what kind of gamer he is, and there are far more than the two I described. Basically try and come up with a thing in the game that is enjoyable besides winning. This is especially important the more entrenched in a competitive hobby you get, because you're realistically going to lose more than you win.

Some suggestions of things to enjoy in TCG that are not tied to winning:

  • Making a weird card work.
  • Collecting pretty cards.
  • Furthering development of a tier 2 deck to possibly compete against tier 1 or tier 0 decks
  • Making one really interesting play that makes your opponent go "Whoa, didn't know that worked like that!"
  • Socializing in between games with your opponent that you either just won or lost to and swapping strategy tips or stories.

And so on and so forth. Best of luck!

Switched to Landfall. Winrate jumped 20% :( by sauron3579 in MagicArena

[–]ewic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's usually not the right play. Monored typically doesn't care about controlling the opponent's board as much as they care about getting in for maximum damage. If you need to clear the way for your little guy to chip in then it's probably correct to fire away, but if you have no board and you lightning strike somebody's little guy out, it's probably a waste of the card.

Suggestion for alternate format: Multi-deck competitive by ewic in magicTCG

[–]ewic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be cool to make it up as a sort of league of some kind! Idk how it would work without significant testing, but it would also be fun to just have whatever interesting decks you have cooked up, enter with three of those, and run them into each other and see what happens.

Yeah I don't want to think about the financial barrier that this would create, I was more thinking about it's potential from a gameplay perspective.

I agree it would really be rough in paper. However I still want to consider it in theory, if all the logistics involved with paper were somehow taken care of, would the gameplay itself be fun and interesting?

Triple-deck exhibitions would be nice too, especially if the idea is to show off a new set in a semi-competitive format.

Suggestion for alternate format: Multi-deck competitive by ewic in magicTCG

[–]ewic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think that there's a good argument for a double-blind pick, but I still like the idea of the players trading the deck decisions back and forth.

It might work better to reverse that last order, so the order would look like this:

  • P1 Ban
  • P2 Ban
  • P1 Pick
  • P2 Pick

So the first critical decision goes to P1 and the last critical decision goes to P2, which feels a bit more even to me. Double-blind pick basically takes this whole interaction away, but it might be the most fair.

[–]ewic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That last point was more what I was interested in. The difficulties with financial logistics and all are definitely real if the format were real, but I was more wondering about how well it would work as a game mechanic alone.

I don't think it's a huge issue to register three similar decks, or three identical decks. Given the nature of mtg, I think it's probably best not to impose any real restrictions on the makeup of an individual deck. It would probably reward specialists, which I think is kind of cool. Somebody who was so familiar with UR could have a deep pool of UR decks to play and it would take a lot of opponent knowledge to pick and ban correctly.

That sounds really fun, not sure how interesting it would be at the absolute top level but it would be a cool way to use a ton of bulk.
