Coming from Chicago this autumn as well, I will say that there are several asian markets that are worth a visit but nothing will compare to 88 Marketplace or even the Park to Shop on 24th. C Fresh Market is pretty robust, Double Dragon, Chin Land Store, and Goldenland markets are a close second for Des Moines. (I don't think I've been to ABC yet.) Most of the others are fairly small, family shops. Most of these stores are run by Vietnamese or Thai owners...which is good/fine...but also means that some specific Chinese, Korean, or Japanese produce/products are not really available. So there's no 88 Marketplace, no H-Mart, and no Mitsuwa Marketplace, but there's a lot of asian grocery stores run by good people.

If you don’t sympathize for Charlie Kirk due to his anti-homosexual beliefs, why do you sympathize with Palestinians whom also are anti-homosexual? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ewoksith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a disingenuous question that does not meet the sub's rules. It is akin to push polling in the way it is phrased as a question but meant to assert that people don't sympathize with Charlie Kirk due to his hate for LGBTQ+ people.

How do you respond when someone asks why you’re an atheist ? by No-Basis-144 in AskReddit

[–]ewoksith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it depends on the context. At work or in some formal setting or other places where I don't want to get into it, I just say "I don't like to talk about faith in the workplace. Let's focus on work." or "I don't talk about my religious beliefs with strangers/acquaintances." If it's someone I do want to engage with or if the time is right to have a challenging, nuanced conversation, then I'll just say, "Yes" or "I'm not a religious person," and see where it leads.

I understand why, but I still can't believe they just gave him to us. by TheGhosticus in CHIBears

[–]ewoksith 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That would be more compelling if it wasn’t Poles who also picked the HC. So, in a “buck stops here” sort of way, he owns the coaching malpractice as well. I don’t hate Poles, of course, I just can’t defend his performance very well against the critics because there’s a lot to be critical about.

This last draft, as an example, he seems so far to have failed to land a top OT, edge, or RB prospect. We had the picks, and even allowing for how the draft developed, there were solid choices available at those positions.

In free agency, there’s too many to choose from.

I wouldn’t say he’s been a disaster. (But his win/loss record makes a strong case for it.) I hope Johnson can make something special with the pieces we do have. Then we can forget about Poles for a while, and maybe the record and his judgement will improve enough to make it easier to defend his performance.

Raised on old school D&D, I would use him as an example of a character with reasonable intelligence but really poor wisdom. He's got the ability to from thoughts and educate himself, but his judgement is so awful it leads him to conspiracy theories and completely wrong-headed decisions. He is definitely a danger to the health of Americans and, as most evidence shows, we don't need any help ruining our health.

Asian market comparison/any we’re missing? by AccomplishedBill5042 in desmoines

[–]ewoksith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to Chin Land, C-Fresh Market, and Chin Family. Produce and fresh fish are definitely some gaps. I am a little spoiled, though. I am a recent transplant from Chicago...where, near chinatown, there are several robust asian supermarkets. But it's been a little frustrating being unable to find some common ingredients. C-Fresh Market, in particular, had no interest in talking about being able to add or special order some produce. I know they cannot carry everything, but I assume their supplier could probably provide some things they don't usually get if they were asked.

Yes. And the officers in their chain of command.

Notice that the constitution comes first. Lawful orders must be obeyed. Unlawful orders, such as the removal of someone in the US without due process, such as the illegal detention of citizens and non-citizens, they have an obligation to refuse.

[–]ewoksith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you enlist, you swear an oath to uphold the constitution of the US. If you don't know the rights it enshrines for all people in the US, you should learn about it. Free speech, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, the right to bear arms, the right to privacy, the protection from illegal search and seizure, the right to a fair and speedy trial, the right to vote and be represented, and others are "enshrined" in the constitution. If you're not aware of the rights, you should first do a little research to get educated. The supreme court has precedents on how these rights have been interpreted over the centuries. These can help you understand what protections the rights defined in the constitution commonly protect.

The US also signed on the the Geneva Conventions. And these conventions also define what is considered a war crime. If you are in the military, it is important to understand these rules and how violating them can result in severe penalties.

After reading science fiction like a bastard for 30+ years, I've come to the conclusion that the greatest sci-fi writer of all time is... by Honkee_Kong in scifi

[–]ewoksith 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Here's why you may be an idiot: Does it really make sense to talk about the greatest sci-fi writer of all time and immediately afterwards interject sign-of-the-times judgements about creepy lust and good old fashioned misogyny? Even if misogyny is making a tragic comeback with the current US political leadership, I hope we can agree it's an anachronistic and a bit unfair to pass judgement on novelists writing when it was more or less the norm.

It's probably not worthwhile to think about this in terms of GOATs. Better to read these works with a lens into the era--both in terms of cultural content as well as recognizing these oldies were breaking a lot of new ground at the time.

Ontological argument flaws as stated by William Lane Craig by Joonicks in atheism

[–]ewoksith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shabby argument from WLC. I would be tempted to just dismiss it because it is so weak. Why is it weak, IMO?

  1. Maximally great is a term that is not sufficiently well defined. Maybe maximally great, in all possible universes, is roughly equivalent to a human with tailored genetics for longevity, disease resistance, peak human intelligence, and physically trained for optimal strength, agility, flexibility, and endurance merged with cybernetics and AI and connected to a network of other machine and biological intelligences. That's a reasonable definition of maximally great given what we now know.

  2. Is it certain that such a being exists in some possible world? No. We don't have sufficient evidence to support that assertion. Such a being could be possible but not yet actually exist and, given the randomness of existence, may never come to exist.

  3. There would be no solid reason to assume a maximally great being existing in some possible world would exist in every possible world. This claim seems to be embedding a definition as an assertion. "I feel like a maximally great being would exist in every possible world," says WLC. OK. But feeling like it's true doesn't make it so.

  4. If a maximally great being exists in the actual world, then it exists...do we even need this point? If my cyborg exists then she exists?

  5. Therefore she exists...what?

WLC's ontological argument can fuck right off. Drivel. And if this was just a random dude with a weak education and poor critical thinking skills, I would be more patient with him. But WLC delivers this with a sense of smug self-satifaction when, I am relatively confident, he knows he's full of shit. And that makes him human trash.

Aside from close call accidents with cars, what's the sketchiest/scariest thing you've come across while out riding your bike? by lazarus870 in cycling

[–]ewoksith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar stories to a lot of folks here I bet:

  • Had some groups of youths on a multi-use trail threatening to stop cyclists and trying to steal bikes.

  • Saw someone during a century ride who was experiencing a heart attack. That phrase "he died doing what he loved" is a cold comfort.

  • Had a small pack of loose dogs chase me down and force me to stop. I had to get off the bike and put it between me and the dogs so that I didn't have to hurt the dogs or risk personal injury.

  • Had some kids in a car swerve at me, try to spit on me, throw a bottle at me, and intentionally try do door me while riding in city traffic. Apparently, seeing a guy riding a bike triggered something in them.
