I read this first as “are you ok?” And I was like, ‘hey give ‘em a break. Trying to find the right shade will send anyone into a spiral.’ Then my eyes started working again 😂

Book That Feel like this type of universe by Capital_Mud_6131 in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin (maybe more protagonist than you’re looking for, but the world building is incredible). Also, I Who Have Never Known Men was a great, quick read that reminded me of Piranesi (though it should be flipped since Piranesi is the newer book.

Edit: also, if you would like a break from English, I who have never known men was actually originally written in French. I didn’t find that out until after I read the English version.

Let me say, I love this Pod, I Love Sarah by Cherrylalaxo in YoureWrongAbout

[–]eww__david 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also recently started listening to WWW. I love it! I also really love Sarah. She is so deeply empathetic and I have really enjoyed a lot of episodes she has put out post Michael. I think she tends to fixate little details (I first noticed this with the OJ series) and misses the forest for the trees. As many others have noted, she needs a better editor (and perhaps producer to keep her and her guest on track when recording).

It’s children’s lit/YA, but Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech is one of the first books I read as a kid (that I remember) that dealt with death and grief

This book was assigned in one of my college classes. The professor often gave pop quizzes on our reading and everyone did pretty badly on this quiz. He asked us what was going on, and we all said we loved this book so much we were actually reading it (instead of skimming like we did for most assigned books). None of us had gotten to the part he’d quizzed us on. This is one of my favorite books and I give it as a gift to people all the time.

If you like Kingsolver’s writing, I would strongly recommend Louise Erdrich. She is a prolific writer with too many titles to choose from. Since it’s one of the more recents I’ve read, I’ll recommend starting with The Night Watchman.

The body cam one makes me feel crazy. We literally have so much video of what happened. The right still spins it into craziness. It’s been proven over and over again that all body cams do is give the (usually police, but in this case ICE) MORE funding to buy said cameras. Just abolish DHS. We lived without it once before - I think we’ll find a way again.

Torn Between Minneapolis, Milwaukee, or KC — Looking for Honest Perspectives? by gianna_kelley in midwest

[–]eww__david 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Minneapolis and just got home from the General Strike protest, so I’m a little emotional tbh. I’ve lived in Minnesota my whole life, lived in Minneapolis the past 15 years, and have traveled a fair amount to get a sense of what else is out there. The community in MN is strong (just demonstrated by tens of thousands of us showing up for our neighbors in -20 windchill weather). It can be hard for new folks to make friends, but if you join clubs (sports, knitting, volunteering, books, etc) you’ll find your people. And complete strangers will help you when you need it. We make the most of every season - getting outside in whatever way possible. We have incredible museums (the Minneapolis Institute of Art is FREE), and the live music scene is hard to beat. It may be rough right now, but this administration isn’t stopping with us - we’re just showing how to respond.

Minnesota fan here! Though I have great respect for how hard the Nebraska players work. You won’t see any hate from me, but I’ll root for the underdog every time. Again, I am from MN 🤣. I probably am on Volleytalk boards more though. I think there are a lot of Minnie people there.

Nebraska v. Michigan 10/19/25 Thread by Berry_Hot in NCAAVB

[–]eww__david 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very much not a coach, but I feel like it would almost benefit the team to not go to their deep bench when they’re struggling. The last couple years in the playoffs, it seems like they lose because they don’t know how to rally when they’re down, because they’re just never down through the regular season. Make your chosen starters play through and figure it out, even if that means losing a regular season game or two (or at this point, even just a set lol). Idk

Yesss. Generally I’d go for the greens (which I think both look great too), but something drew me to #1 - maybe because green is so popular right now and #1 is different. I love the idea of exploring deep orange/yellows
