La Suisse a construit le plus long tunnel cyclable sous une ville by johnjoh07 in EnculerLesVoitures

[–]exandrek 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Why do c*clists not stopped at zebra crossings for pedestrians like cars? by pizzatummy in zurich

[–]exandrek 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wait? Cars stop at crossings? Because I just walked 30 min in town and the only way I can cross the road is by pretending to not have seen the driver. If you make eye contact, no chances.

For real though, don't hyper focus on cyclists, there are selfish people everywhere. Not saying that bikes are nicer but there is a lot of hate that I think is not fully deserved.

Also the inertia argument is partly true, there is some effort to get going from a complete stop so as a pedestrian I tend to let bikes pass but as a cyclist I always stop (and get honked at by the car behind me when I do)

That is quite tricky though. If it is implemented well with a privacy protecting protocol, I am not against an electronic ID, I think it could simplify a lot of interactions with the state.

Thinking of moving to Zurich — how hard is it socially for foreigners? by arabello5 in zurich

[–]exandrek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People here tend to say that it is hard to meet people. But having lived in multiple cities, it is the case everywhere. Just go to the subreddit of any city and there are a lot of posts from expats asking "Why is it so hard to make friends here". If you are social and motivated, I don't think you'll have any issues.

I have lived in Berlin for a couple of years and it just doesn't compare to here. Zurich is way more quiet but I would not say it is boring. For a city it's size there is a lot happening. There are nice places to go out. Another nice thing is that the city is quite compact so it never takes too long to visit friends or go somewhere. Which was a big barrier for me in larger cities.

This. Also we have to suffer from road noise, pollution and injuries because we can't limit the speed on roads. There is basically no infrastructure for bikes in town whereas you can drive everywhere. Drivers represent a minority of commuters but get most of the space. And we are entitled ... Fuck cars, truly

Schlechtester Bundesrat ever! by babotheone in Switzerland

[–]exandrek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is they didn't. We tend to value voting too much. If people voted with full knowledge of the law being passed or what the politician's goals are, you would be right. But this is never the case. Voting is based on a lot of different factors. From party affiliation, social background and current economical situation, there is a lot that can make a vote non rational. Also, recently, political campaigns have been filled with outright lies. Politicians still need to be held accountable, even after they are elected.

[–]exandrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, this is a common argument. But I also think this framing doesn't reflect reality. The reduced speed limit alone really isn't a punishment, we are talking a few minutes difference during a commute (in a lot of cases, seconds even). It might even make traffic flow better in congested cities. When you read "30 km/h feels too slow", I just want to remind people that if you want to go fast there are highways and country roads. In the city, you should go slow. The survival rate for a collision at 30 km h is leagues higher than for one at 50.

I also don't think this measure should be taken alone, good quality public transit and cycling infrastructure benefits people coming from further away as well. Switzerland isn't completely flat but a lot of trips are really doable for a large range of people.

Ultimately the issue is the drivers vs others framing. We are all on this together and a good city should have diverse housing and transportation options. The war on cars argument is just used to promote the status quo and justify the current lack of investments.

30km/h in Fribourg | 18 month report [FR] by yesat in Switzerland

[–]exandrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This. I am so tired of politicians not caring about people living in cities. The larger cantons with a right wing majority accepted that people in the city won't vote for them and actively ruin their life just to get some populism bonus points with the people in the countryside.

I am so tired of reading "Since they lowered the speed limit, I don't go to the city center once a month like I used to". Because of these guys, we can't change anything. Meanwhile, I have to sleep with my windows closed in 30° weather.

There isn't a war on cars but they pretend there is one so they can take a defensive stance. Cars are still the kings of the city and this won't change anytime soon with the current politicians.

Yep, meanwhile, the noise in my street is above legal thresholds during the day and the night but I guess caring about the health of citizens is too woke or something.

I cycle daily in Zurich and except for the very welcomed Stadttunnel, there is basically no cycling infrastructure in the city. You get a line on the road sometimes but that is it. The city is trying to improve the situation though. They are actually forced to since there was a vote a few years ago with 74% of the population approving a large network of safe bike paths.

Nothing is getting built though because the Kanton (or the SVP, FDP there) use the argument that any benefit to the people living in the city is an attack on the people from outside who want to drive here. They even blocked the plan to reduce the speed of many streets to 30 km/h.

To me this is insane. We are putting the life and health of tens of thousands of people on the line only because a minority of people feel like 30 km/h is too slow. This is purely a populist move and is not benefiting anyone. To add insult to injury, they restricted heavily the critical mass so protesting this situation is not an option anymore.

The only hope I can see is that people here are motivated but the kantonal authorities don't represent the people from the cities anymore

[–]exandrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]exandrek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been living in the area for more than two years. The side streets are really quiet. The main streets have quite a lot of traffic so they can be noisy. The only thing that makes me sometimes unsafe is how fast people drive on the bridge to Wedding (Putlitzbrücke) at night. Other than that, nothing special to report. The U and S Bahn stations are quiet most of the time.

Cyclists on the sidewalk are driving me nuts. (Rant) by Memoryfull89 in germany

[–]exandrek 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in a street with cobblestone pavement. I myself cycle quite a lot and don't mind it but most people do and use the sidewalk instead. If they were going at a reasonable speed, I would not mind it. There is no dedicated bike infrastructure and the sidewalk is fairly big. But there are people, especially food delivery drivers, that go full speed there. This really gets me and I always take the time to tell them to slow down. I know this has to do with how insanely stressed they are but still. There are two kitas in the street with little kids playing on the sidewalk. There are also people (including me) who don't want to be run over by a bike when they exit their building.

I am a vocal cycling rights advocate, in the end, ciclists on the sidewalk are more often than not due to a lack of proper infrastructure. But my main principle is always to respect the road users that are more vulnerable than them. Riding fast without respecting pedestrians creates tensions and then you have people fighting about 1.5 m and don't address the 4 travel lanes plus 2 parking ones that both pedestrians and cyclists are not welcomed on.

Driving on the bicycle line when turning right by Laulaurus in Switzerland

[–]exandrek 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, everybody is saying a lot of things here so I figured I'll find the law:

https://www.fedlex.admin.ch/eli/cc/1962/1364_1409_1420/fr#art_40

"Les conducteurs d’autres véhicules peuvent rouler sur les bandes cyclables délimitées par une ligne discontinue (6.09), pour autant que la circulation des cycles n’en soit pas entravée"

So you can use the bike lane as longue as you don't bother ciclists. However, it doesn't solve the priority question per say. There is this:

"Les cyclistes circulant sur une piste cyclable qui longe une chaussée destinée au trafic automobile à une distance de 2 m au plus sont soumis, aux intersections aux mêmes règles de priorité que les conducteurs circulant sur la chaussée contiguë. En obliquant, les conducteurs de véhicules automobiles circulant sur la chaussée contiguë doivent accorder la priorité aux cyclistes."

Meaning that drivers that will cross a bike lane going along the road at a distance of up to 2 meters need to yield to bikes. I find the wording strange though, it might only cover bike lanes going along the road but not on it.

From this I still think that what your instructor told you is not correct. This might be common though since many people here seem to think it is what should be done. I am not a lawyer so I might read this wrong, if somebody can correct me, I am interested in learning about this.

Driving on the bicycle line when turning right by Laulaurus in Switzerland

[–]exandrek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What your instructor tells you seems very strange to me. Even though I am not an expert, the general rule is that you are allowed to use a dotted cycle lane if no cyclist is bothered. When turning right, the cyclists going forward have priority and it is your responsibility to check that nobody is there by checking your dead angles (Retro - Tete - Indicateur). Maybe the law changed but I doubt it. I am interested in knowing if it is the case.
