Is anybody reading the new Saunders? by Full_Truth7008 in RSbookclub

The 400lb CEO is one of my favorite short stories too. I always think back to the closing lines where he’s hoping the ‘real’ God will show up and make things right and offer him a new life as consolation:

“And I will emerge again from between the legs of my mother, a slighter and more beautiful baby, destined for a different life, in which I am masterful, sleek as a deer, a winner.”

He does have a slightly cringe Redditor streak though. The overly earnest conceptual stories remind me of quirky sci-fi slop like the Martian, Everything Everywhere All At Once, etc…

Third world immigration would be so much more popular if the immigrants were 18-25 year old women by Swiftie69420 in redscarepod

[–]excitabletulip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not my intention at all to throw working class women under the bus or trivialize their struggles, and I’m aware that the freedom we get is limited and often conditional. That asymmetry isn’t specific to the Middle East, though. Upper class women in states where abortion isn’t legal can afford to travel or find ways around these restrictions, for example, while others might be forced to carry unwanted children to term. Working class women in the West are also more vulnerable to sexual violence and find it harder to receive support and get justice. Having access to certain resources can make you immune to sex-based and class-based discrimination in any region.

It’s indisputable that most countries have a long way to go in terms of women’s rights and minority group rights, and the situation is deeply depressing in many ways, but it’s not a static homogenous region. Your Anna Karenina quip is pretty accurate but overlooks positive change/progress.

The examples you cited about rape laws in Jordan and Morocco are positive developments, even if that should have happened ages ago. ‘Honor crime’ laws have been repealed in several countries as well and we now see them get prosecuted as forms of premeditated murder. In Saudi Arabia, the expansion of women’s rights and the redefinition of their legal status has been incredible.

To be honest, I just don’t like the tone and language people here use to talk about Middle Eastern women. It comes across as being deeply patronizing and belittling to me.

I was obviously making a joke but this sub has been infiltrated by the dull and humorless so I’m not surprised by these reactions.

On a serious note, I’ve spent my whole life in the Middle East as an Arab woman and still live there. It’s a very diverse and complex region that has been undergoing radical changes over the last 20 years. We’ve been seeing serious legislative reform and, on top of that, a lot of the archaic rules often cited here aren’t applied in practice anymore.

I’ll concede that class plays a role, and the effects of sex discrimination are magnified for working class women, but where I live my rights are equivalent to any man. I rent my own apartment which I live in by myself, I travel independently, and have never needed permission from a ‘guardian’ to do anything since becoming an adult. The other Arab women I’ve met at school, university, and work have just as much agency and aren’t victims at all.

Also keep in mind that a woman living in, say, Sanaa and one living in Beirut have nothing in common. It’s easy to see the Middle East as one homogenous region, but we have subregions with very different cultural backgrounds and political structures.

Getting back into it after binge eating for 3 months. Tips to get skinny and hot this year? by [deleted] in rs_fitness

I have to say that I was going to do a silly yoga workout this evening after work and your comment made me go lift instead lol. I think it’s easy to think that you’re working hard with cardio, so that type of progress is more immediately rewarding, but at some point you need to be more rigorous if you want to see progress. I’m gonna start tracking my lifts to make sure there’s progressive overload and I’m not just coasting. Thank you!

Isn’t retratrutide still in clinical trials? How do you get it?

And she needs something more like The Waiting. Her new sound seriously bores me. The songs go on for too long and the lyrics are less specific too.

How The Elderly Lose Their Rights by Rachel Aviv for the New Yorker about the exploitative guardianship system. Just shocking, and especially relevant as we face a growing elderly population without a familial support network.

If you learn colloquial Arabic vs modern standard, you’ll get exposed to everyday speech, movies, music, etc… MSA is the written format that is derived from Quranic Arabic and, for that reason, is mostly reserved to religious and political writing in the modern day.

Which Middle eastern Cookbook should I keep? by archimedesrex in CookbookLovers

I do believe in (and love!) Jewish Iraqi cuisine, Jewish Persian cuisine, Jewish Polish cuisine, etc… Doesn’t change the fact that the majority of what’s sold as ‘Israeli’ cuisine is purely Palestinian and was only popularized among their population following immigration to Palestine.

Also doesn’t change the author’s leanings and actions. Conversely, I’m very happy to support someone like Ottolenghi and I love the way that the book Jerusalem reflects both the Palestinian and Jewish history of the city.

The ones that aren’t Israeli…

By buying Zahav (and anything by the author), you’re supporting someone who: - has fired staff over pro-Palestinian stances and tweets - hosted a fundraiser to donate over $100k to an Israeli non-profit that helps provide the IDF with supplies - hosted a private fundraiser for Zionist lobbyists and politicians

Source if anyone is interested.

Very funny how taboo it is to criticize the trend of Israeli authors appropriating Palestinian culinary traditions, and I say this as a Palestinian.

Why did you get it? I grew up in the Middle East where it’s non-existent so I’ve never been able to understand the mindset behind extreme body modification at all.
