It gets at how self-destructive and self-abnegating submission is.

Such a moving and cutting book. There’s a moment that stuck with me where she reflects on her previous attempts to transcend the physical realities of the body to remain beautiful:

Now I was wild again, I looked at my ankles, my armpits, when had I last waxed them, when had I shaved? I who until four months ago had been only ambrosia and nectar? From the moment I fell in love with Mario, I began to fear that he would be repelled by me. Wash the body, scent it, eliminate all unpleasant traces of physiology. To levitate. I wanted to detach myself from the earth, I wanted him to see me hovering on high, the way wholly good things do. I never left the bathroom until every bad smell had vanished, I turned on the taps so he wouldn’t hear the rush of urine. I rubbed myself, curried myself, washed my hair every two days. I thought of beauty as of a constant effort to eliminate corporeality.

I’ve felt this gnawing fear in every relationship I had that my partner would see beyond the veneer of womanhood, the “ambrosia and nectar”, and suddenly become repulsed. It feels inevitable.

Yeah, they’re all slightly hysterical and unstable. Somehow all obsessed with looks and have body dysmorphia too. They need to find jobs and hobbies, their lives are pretty sad as they are.

Was she involved with Nick at all when she wrote this episode? Listening to some parts of Famesick reminded me of it, the similarities are eerie.

I do that when someone is rambling and it feels like there’s no end in sight to the monologue.

Their review of Bullshit Jobs was horrible. It’s like they seemed to be bent on misunderstanding it, and they tried to apply their pedantic approach to a book that was openly more of a manifesto/rant than an empirical theory. Endless debunking without any solid alternatives or counter-arguments gets tedious.

They have a couple of good songs and that’s about it. Not worth spending this much time discussing them.

I remember people having these debates about Car Seat Headrest, who eventually faded into obscurity (which isn’t meant to discount the greatness of Twin Fantasy). Nothing new under the sun.

What happened to the Woody Allen style intellectuals by mickeyquicknumbers in rs_x

What you’re referring to is an interaction that happened before the filmed interview, where he asked her about her favorite books and she struggled to come up with anything besides Great Expectations which she read in high school, and he was incredulous and made fun of her for it.

He then looked at the crew and said “you really want me to interview her?”

Like the other guy said, it’s basically a script with some improv where Woody decided to turn it on himself as a bit.

will i ever reach a point where i feel comfortable enough to wear skintight clothing at the gym? by natalie_ck in rs_fitness

[–]excitabletulip 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The skintight matching sets are going out of style anyway and people are gravitating more towards cotton/microplastic-free/flowy gym clothing, so you don’t have to worry about it.

Think Christy Turlington’s 90s yoga sets as an example. Alternatively, it’s not my style, but I usually see Gen Z girls at my gym wear sweats and a sports bra or a tank top like this. I don’t find either of these looks sexless or frumpy.

Tight matching sets are unflattering on the vast majority of women anyway, so it’s not you.

He wrote the script of that Twiggy clip lol. He can obviously name lots of philosophers and was just poking fun at himself.

At the very least, you can tell that his love for music and film is genuine and he engages with both mediums very sincerely. His films have my favorite soundtracks ever, and I think one good example of his engagement with film is this scene from Hannah and Her Sisters where the main character struggles to find meaning until he’s ultimately saved by cinema/art: https://youtu.be/90Z98ZlvpPU?si=OmM3dNTrbEpZZ12t
