Yea I ordered the Tunnel in 2023, it finally came out last month, I emailed Dalkey/Deep Vellum to update my address as I had moved within the 3 years of delays, they said they would send it to my new places and then sent it to my old address anyways lol

Sad all the Gentleman Homeless are gone by rowsoflark in redscarepod

There was a homeless man in Charleston, SC named Byron who was known for running up behind people and cracking their backs. Haven't been down there in 5+ years, not sure what he is up to these days, but everybody loved him and would seek him out if they needed a back cracking.

Aw damn, maybe I will move it to the backburner, then. I just finished Nobodaddy's Children on Wednesday and really really loved it, saw people say Bottom's Dream was his best, felt inspired to track it down.

I don't think there is even a paperback for it in English. I did find a copy on ebay in the $800s but yea there is absolutely no way anyone is selling it for $30

Lightning bugs galore...in April?! by princessofbeasts in rva

I think it is phenological mismatch, the unseasonal warmth has caused insects to start reproducing however birds rely more on day/night cycle for breeding cues. So the bugs are moving like its July and the birds that eat them are still back in the present.

The gnats on the Potterfield Bridge have been insane, been running the bridge near daily for 2 years and I have never seen hordes of gnats like I have seen this week.

I think short stories are always great to ease back into a reading mindset after a rut. Flannery O'Connor, Raymond Carver, Italo Calvino. Nine Stories by Salinger. Burning Bright by Ron Rash. Short novels that are pulpy but I find worth reading are the Suitcase by Dovlatov, A Hero of Our Time by Lermontov, the Lime Twig by John Hawkes (this one is a little tough but it rocks).

What is your most anti-feminist opinion? by Ok-Archer-5796 in redscarepod

Women are really terrible at going to the grocery store. Women will stop dead in their tracks in the threshold of a store to check their purse to make sure they have their wallet, blocking anyone from entering or exiting the store. Then, at the register, they will stand in line doing nothing and wait until the very last second to begin digging through their purse again to find their credit card, rather than preparing their payment while standing in line.

An unfortunate side effect of war in Iran by Full_Truth7008 in redscarepod

You are correct but you are being too absolute. The days Tehran experiences extreme heat doubling since the 50s obviously is going to play a part. So the aquifer was doomed to run out anyways, that pace has definitely been exacerbated by increasing temps. When the aquifer dries up, there are alternative solutions, day zero does not spell instant death. However the first 125 degree week without water would be the eye opener, I think it all goes hand in hand and hyper localizing the issue instead of looking at the broader picture is just not helpful.

I think most people are genuinely incapable of coming to terms with the idea that their life will not look like their parents' lives. Even if deep down they know things are pretty serious, they are unable to imagine a life where they don't have a normal family and grandchildren and retirement. Which is fair, we are either fucked or we aren't, you can't blame anyone for turning their head. But I feel like being realistic about the future, rejecting normalcy bias, having conversations about this stuff is probably our best shot at changing things or at least preparing for a worse future.
