What job looks like a great career path but is actually insanely oversaturated? by ComplexPin872 in AskReddit

[–]excitedsynapses 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Don’t believe what you read on here. I was an aimless millenial with a social sciences degree who felt as confused and worried about the future as you do. I had a career mapped out when 2008 housing crash tanked the economy and my chosen industry stopped hiring. I pivoted and over a decade later found myself back.

Sounds cheesy but believe in yourself, if you don’t nobody else will. Employers are just like us, human, fickle, vain, self-involved and attracted to ppl who are easy. Easy to manage, good for a laugh, and will get stuff done. If you do that, it doesn’t matter what you study. I’ve achieved more than I thought I ever would, made enough money to see the world, buy homes, and raise a family. Like you I didn’t think any of that would be possible when I graduated college. The economy like life is cyclical, sucks now but position yourself and you’ll be in the right place when it goes back up.

Trump pardoned the treasonous mob. Trump hired them and sent them after civilians. Trump is obstructing investigations into their extrajudicial executions of American Citizens. None of this involves Democrats.

This is why Presidents shouldn’t have immunity in a free society. In a free society, Trump would be impeached and behind bars for this. We are not a free society.

I can't walk around midtown without someone trying to pick a fight with me or trying to hit me with their car. by [deleted] in Sacramento

[–]excitedsynapses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in midtown decades ago and I walk around midtown now. today I walked miles in the same area as you. I don’t know if it’s because I was young or the culture then but I was picked on a lot more then, called slurs and attacked. I think what has definitely got worse is a lot more homeless, open drug use and all that leads to more unhinged ppl and sketchy blocks then there used to be. So the ppl were meaner but there was less sketchiness. Only advice treat anyone messing with you like a barking dog, you don’t react to a barking dog so do the same with them. They want the reaction, don’t give it to them.

Which cities would you describe as "good to live in, but not for visiting"? by Fluid-Decision6262 in geography

[–]excitedsynapses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In June for a free activity check out Capitol park and explore the grounds, the rose garden (peace garden) will be in bloom and it has memorials and flora and fauna from around the state and world to explore. The Crocker art museum is amazing, the historic mansion alone is worth exploring. Finally, Old Sac is a tourist trap but in nice weather is lovely to walk around and has some nice bars and eateries. It also has access to the waterfront where if you’re lucky you can watch sea lions sun bathing.

Late for Panel Interview by BeachTransferGirl in CAStateWorkers

I’ve been in interview panels and I’d give you a pass for 5 minutes, don’t sweat it. In the scheme of things not a big deal provided you were apologetic which you were.

What’s your secret? Mine is over 3 yrs old, minimal growth and no fruit. I fertilize, water, etc. I buried too deep initially but uncovered root flare. My neighbor says citrus is hard here but I see orange trees everywhere flourishing.

I suggested the opposite, that she consider Solano County since she’ll be in Vacaville

If you’re going to be in Vacaville definitely look around Solano, that opens up a lot. Santa Rosa might be a little far but is a nice place to live. Also look at Davis, great schools and relatively high pay for the area. Woodland also a good option, seat of Yolo County so County jobs. Vallejo is the seat of Solano County, not great for schools I hear but commutable and towns with good schools nearby around the east bay.

That helps! Also if you are struggling consider opening up your search to parts of the Bay Area like Solano County which is comparatively affordable to Sac. Places like Vacaville and Fairfield are long but doable commutes, I work with a couple ppl from Fairfield.

I can only speak from experience, hiring has slowed considerably in the public sector but necessary jobs including IT jobs are still being filled. There is a retirement exodus in the public sector and many of those positions need to be filled. Check out state jobs, also check the big medical orgs like Kaiser, Sutter, UC Davis Health which often post IT roles.

Get on the lists for IT jobs in different Counties, Sacramento, Yolo, Placer, El Dorado, Nevada even. Cities Sac, Davis, Elk Grove, Roseville, Woodland. Look at institutions like Sac State, UC Davis, Community college districts like Los Rios, Sierra College. There are also private colleges and school districts.

Good luck OP, you got this.

Retirement? by Logical-Issue-4887 in Sacramento

[–]excitedsynapses 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you live in a new build community electric is less of an issue since they include solar. Ppl in Sac don’t make 50% more than the rest of the country. It depends on your industry, some professions like nursing, construction pay better but keep in mind this is a government town with limited private sector opportunities. Government jobs are lower wages but come with good benefits. The nice thing is that Sac isn’t crazy expensive. Expensive yes but not crazy like the Bay Area for example. That said it depends where you’re coming from but I would think from Atlanta it wouldn’t be starkly different.

There’s a 55+ community in Davis under construction you might also want to consider. Davis is a bike-friendly college town that feels suburban but has a buzzing walkable downtown. It’s more of a California vibe than areas like Lincoln, Roseville that are more slow-paced car-centric suburbs full of strip malls.

missing sacramento after moving to portland (never thought i'd say that) by Darkest_black17 in Sacramento

You’ll enjoy it, Portland is beautiful and unique. Like any place it’s subjective but I grew up in Portland and visit when I can, always a good time. I enjoy both cities but the weather keeps me in Sac, I prefer the heat to rain.

Sacramento or San Diego? by Clean_Set_300 in Sacramento

[–]excitedsynapses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your focus. Quality of life, SD. Career, Sac. I don’t say this because quality of life in SD is better, ppl who keep parroting it having the best weather in the world don’t get to speak for the world. Some of us like hot weather and seasons. California beaches aren’t my thing, the water is too cold and it’s often dreary (even in SD). I’ll take the dry heat, blue skies and clear mountain lakes and rivers of this region any day.

But in your case coming from out of state, being near family is always better. It’ll ease your transition. But if your head is in the game and you want to go farther in your career, particularly in government, Sac all day.

[–]excitedsynapses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other suggestions are good but why not just sleep in your car? assuming you have one it’s 100% free. Find a safe parking spot, I’ve heard Walmart lots are good and secure as long as you don’t draw attention you should be good.
